Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Serving as the seat of Walton County, DeFuniak Springs is one of the most picturesque cities in the Florida Panhandle. A surveying party scouting routes for the Louisville and Nashville Railroad discovered the area in 1881 and decided it was the perfect setting for a town. Named for Frederick DeFuniak, a prominent official of the railroad, the town of DeFuniak Springs was born. Among the settlement's first visitors was a representative of the New York Chautauqua, who was seeking a location for a winter assembly. The first Florida Chautauqua Assembly was later held on the bank of Lake DeFuniak in the winter of 1885. Until the 1920s, DeFuniak Springs was hailed as a cultural and educational center of the Southeast. Today the city remains a popular destination thanks to its continued focus on cultural events and the Victorian architecture for which the town has come to be widely known. In 1992, the DeFuniak Springs Historic District was placed on the National Register of Historic Places thanks to the efforts of the Walton County Heritage Association.

This book was released on 2017-08-29 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the backwoods of Holmes County, settled deep in the rugged landscape of the Florida panhandle, has long been a people set apart from their neighbors. They have deep roots in the story of Florida and America, yet much of their tale is unknown, and until recently was hardly documented. Without evidence or knowledge of this community's actual origins, their neighbors fell back on their assumptions and prejudices to attribute an identity to things they knew little of, or only suspected. Most of this conjecture was erroneous. This work is in part their actual story, as documentary archival sources and the community's own memories tell it.

Download or read book History of Walton County Classic Reprint written by John Love McKinnon and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-16 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Walton County In writing this history we feel that it is due to the memory of the aborigines, our Scotch pioneers, and for the wholesome benefit Of their descendants, who may feel that they have eclipsed them' in learning and in the true ways Of life in these advanced days Of thinking, Of educa tion, and Of fashion. We will venture to say just here that there are but few bits of territory to be found anywhere that are so pregnant with readable history, if properly brought out, as this little, once isolated, Walton section. Lying here, as it were, in the protecting arms of her bounding riv ers, with these loving daughters keeping faithful watch, with her head lying in the lap Of Alabama, that says, Here let us rest, while the great Mexican Gulf, at one time, humbly washing her feet with its gentle waves, to make them pure and white like snow, and at another time dashing her angry waves in maddened fury upon her, with hollow murmuring that sickens the heart and threatens destruction. Listen! Jupiter is enraged now, the coruscations Of his wrath leap over the deep, the pent-up winds are loosed from their caverns, and Old Neptune is riding in glory on the surging waves and through the angry breakers. What a picture! Hugged on either side in the loving arms Of unsleeping protec tion, her head at rest, while her feet are being trampled upon by cruel waves threatening total destruction. Unique though this picture may seem, yet we find that it symbolizes the history Of her people. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
