Book Sea Commonwealth and Other Papers Classic Reprint

Download or read book Sea Commonwealth and Other Papers Classic Reprint written by Arthur Percival Newton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-04 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sea Commonwealth, and Other Papers The papers that are here collected were originally delivered as lectures in an Imperial Studies course in the University of London, King's College, during the Session 1917-18. The original title of the course was The Empire and the Outer World, and it was designed to draw the attention of its hearers from an excessive preoccupation with the momentous events taking place on the continent of Europe to a remem brance that Britain's true concern is rather with the affairs of the world as a whole than with the narrower details of purely territorial questions with which the land powers of Europe are so intimately concerned. Unavoidable difficulties prevented the course having so great a unity of subject and treatment as is usually aimed at by the Imperial Studies Committee, but the papers contain so much of interest in themselves that it has been thought well to collect and publish them in a companion volume to others in the Imperial Studies Series. While the volume was passing through the press the ranks of higher journalism sustained a serious loss through the untimely death of Mr. I. E. Mackenzie, one of the last of whose tasks was the correction of the proofs Of his article on The Colonial Aspirations of Germany. It is impossible to put forth these pages without a word of sincere regret for the passing of so accomplished a collaborator. A. P. N. Book Toward a Cooperative Commonwealth

Download or read book Toward a Cooperative Commonwealth written by Thomas Alter and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2022-04-12 with total page 462 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Agrarian radicalism's challenge to capitalism played a central role in working-class ideology while making third parties and protest movements a potent force in politics. Thomas Alter II follows three generations of German immigrants in Texas to examine the evolution of agrarian radicalism and the American and transnational ideas that influenced it. Otto Meitzen left Prussia for Texas in the wake of the failed 1848 Revolution. His son and grandson took part in decades-long activism with organizations from the Greenback Labor Party and the Grange to the Populist movement and Texas Socialist Party. As Alter tells their stories, he analyzes the southern wing of the era's farmer-labor bloc and the parallel history of African American political struggle in Texas. Alliances with Mexican revolutionaries, Irish militants, and others shaped an international legacy of working-class radicalism that moved U.S. politics to the left. That legacy, in turn, pushed forward economic reform during the Progressive and New Deal eras. A rare look at the German roots of radicalism in Texas, Toward a Cooperative Commonwealth illuminates the labor movements and populist ideas that changed the nation’s course at a pivotal time in its history.

Download or read book The Last Word written by Jeffrey Grey and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2003-11-30 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Official history is a misunderstood genre of historical writing, which attracts much negative comment from (non-official) historians but about which very little detail is actually known. This book examines the development of official history programs in Canada, South Africa, Australia, and New Zealand over the course of the twentieth century, looking at the ways in which they developed and the contributions each made to their respective national historiography. The second part of the work develops some themes from the first and takes the official histories of the Second World War as case studies. Drawing on programs in Australia, Britain, and the United States, these essays examine the relationship between the histories, the historians, and their sponsoring institutions. They assess the impact of the histories on historical understanding of the Second World War. They also consider the impact that contemporary events during the Cold War had on the writing of the official history.

Book excerpt: “Exquisite... Commonwealth is impossible to put down.” — New York Times #1 New York Times Bestseller | NBCC Award Finalist | New York Times Best Book of the Year | USA Today Best Book | TIME Magazine Top 10 Selection | Oprah Favorite Book | New York Magazine Best Book of The Year The acclaimed, bestselling author—winner of the PEN/Faulkner Award and the Orange Prize—tells the enthralling story of how an unexpected romantic encounter irrevocably changes two families’ lives. One Sunday afternoon in Southern California, Bert Cousins shows up at Franny Keating’s christening party uninvited. Before evening falls, he has kissed Franny’s mother, Beverly—thus setting in motion the dissolution of their marriages and the joining of two families. Spanning five decades, Commonwealth explores how this chance encounter reverberates through the lives of the four parents and six children involved. Spending summers together in Virginia, the Keating and Cousins children forge a lasting bond that is based on a shared disillusionment with their parents and the strange and genuine affection that grows up between them. When, in her twenties, Franny begins an affair with the legendary author Leon Posen and tells him about her family, the story of her siblings is no longer hers to control. Their childhood becomes the basis for his wildly successful book, ultimately forcing them to come to terms with their losses, their guilt, and the deeply loyal connection they feel for one another. Told with equal measures of humor and heartbreak, Commonwealth is a meditation on inspiration, interpretation, and the ownership of stories. It is a brilliant and tender tale of the far-reaching ties of love and responsibility that bind us together.

Book Harrington The Commonwealth of Oceana and A System of Politics

Download or read book Harrington The Commonwealth of Oceana and A System of Politics written by James Harrington and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1992-08-20 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: James Harrington's brief career as a political and historical theorist spans the last years of the Cromwellian Protectorate and the Restoration of 1660. This volume comprises the first and last of Harrington's writings. Harrington was the first theorist to interpret the English Civil Wars as a revolution, the result of a long-term process of social change which led to the decay of the old political order. The Commonwealth of Oceana (1656) is a fictionalised presentation of English history up to the victory of the New Model Army, explaining the fall of the monarchy and proposing a republic to replace it. A System of Politics, written after the Restoration, is a scheme of history and political philosophy erected on the foundations of his previous works. Professor Pocock's introduction emphasises Harrington's place as a pivotal figure in the history of English political thought. This edition also contains a chronology of events in Harrington's life and a guide to further reading.
