Book The Heritage of English Knives

Download or read book The Heritage of English Knives written by David Hayden-Wright and published by Schiffer Books. This book was released on 2007-11 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the preeminent reference on antique English knives, written by one of Great Britain's most respected 20th century authorities on weaponry. The text contains much previously unknown historical information about cutlers and their art. Chapters and over 300 color photographs and hand-drawn illustrations cover the earliest history of Sheffield, England, a directory of 19th century cutlers' names, and many groups and types of knives, from the most humble penknife to magnificent exhibition pieces. The history of the famous American designed Bowie knife, manufactured extensively in Sheffield, is explained and amply illustrated. Discussions present multi-bladed sportsmen's pocket knives, farrier's, smoker's, quill knives, curiosities, and actual knives presented to King George IV in 1821. These appear along with a veritable kaliedoscope of craftsmanship. Quoting from the author's Acknowledgements, "Sheffield's legacy is not just in the tangible dust-covered records or faded photographs rescued from destruction, but in the living art form of their craft that endures and remains the symbol of what was the centre of the cutlery world for well over a hundred years."

Book Kinfolks Knives

Download or read book Kinfolks Knives written by Dean Elliott Case and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2010-09 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kinfolks Knives offers an accurate and factual history of Kinfolks Cutlery. Included are four vintage catalogs to aid collectors in the identification and dating of Kinfolks knives, as well as biographies of Kinfolks founders: Russ Case, Tint Champlin, and Dean Case. Also, for the first time, the personal memories of multiple branches of this American cutlery dynasty are included, as well as a foreword by Brad Lockwood. Providing rare insight into Kinfolks and the families involved in its creation and development, Kinfolks Knives is intended to be the most accurate history of the cutlery compiled to date. A timeline of the family and related cutleries is included for quick reference, as well as answers to the most common questions about the company from www.KinfolksInc.com. The mystery of the Jean Case Cutlery Company is at last explained, and many family photographs and recipes are included. We are all connected through Job Case, all kin, and this book may be the history of only one of thirty-two different cutleries our family has started over our 140+ year history in the industry, but it is much more. After decades of feuding and parting ways to start yet another Case-related cutlery, Kinfolks saw three cousins come together to help one another.

Book excerpt: Knives have fired the imagination of people for centuries. They were the first weapons to be developed, and have been used in warfare since the first man discovered he could kill an enemy with a knife easier than pitching rocks at him. Indians made knives of stone or bone, more advanced civilizations made them of metal, working it into sharp, cutting edges, and often adding ornate hilts. The use of knives as weapons declined after rifles and pistols were refined, but knives still capture our imagination. This book offers an examination of the importance of knives to various people in our history, from prehistoric times up to the 1900s. Knives have been tools, weapons, decorations, presentation pieces, collector's items, and the badge of manhood. Few pioneer boys were considered men unless they had a pocketknife, usually a Barlow. A soldier felt naked on a campaign without a knife of some sort, and a cowboy would often be lost without his trusty knife. Explorers, settlers, gamblers, and gold miners used knives, and the Bowie knife made history for its owner, and it is probably the only knife to actually go down in history. Less well-known knives-the Green River Skinners, the I. Wilson knives, the Dadley, the Barlow, the Arkansas Toothpick, the push dagger and others-are only of interest to collectors, but nearly everyone has heard of the famous Bowie knife, and its owner, Jim Bowie. For this reason, coverage of the Bowie knife is limited, although it was impossible to exclude this popular knife that crossed many cultures, was used by many different levels of society, and has been copied more than any other style of knife. Numerous photographs of knives enhance the narrative.
