Book A Heretic s Guide to Eternity

Download or read book A Heretic s Guide to Eternity written by Spencer Burke and published by Jossey-Bass. This book was released on 2008-06-23 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Distinguishing between religion and spirituality, Burke offers what he calls a new way of looking at God, one centered on the idea of grace. He emphasizes a God who is looking to save the world, not a God who seems more intent on condemning certain practices . . . . For Burke, God is to be questioned, not simply obeyed. His challenging thesis will appeal to many people today who have given up on organized religion but still seek some connection to spirituality.

Book The Heretic s Guide to Doctrine

Download or read book The Heretic s Guide to Doctrine written by Daboniel Hereticus and published by Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2020-03-19 with total page 524 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is intended to open Christians' minds up to other Christians and to help improve dialog between them. It deals with where a lot of them are coming from doctrinally, and the problems to be dealt with on both sides. There is a core to all true Christians that should bind us, but we cannot do that as long as we cannot be open with our differences and open-minded enough to understand why some people believe what they do. Mature Christians should be able to talk about the elephant in the room. I am of the firm belief that if everybody was coming from the Bible with what they believed, we would have a lot more agreement. (And the world would hate us all the more.) I certainly do not expect every Christian to agree with me on everything. It is not for nothing I call myself Hereticus.

Book A Handbook for Heretics

Download or read book A Handbook for Heretics written by John W. Sloat and published by CCB Publishing. This book was released on 2009-09 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Handbook for Heretics discusses the differences between religion and the Kingdom of God. Many mainline churches resist the current reformation, a gradual movement away from traditional Christianity toward a vital spirituality. Its adherents are frequently labeled "heretics" when in fact they are actually the leading edge of a new spiritual age. They are discovering the "much more" which Jesus promised to tell us, such spiritual phenomena as out-of-body and near-death experiences, pre-birth and post-death appearances, angel communication, and "coincidental" experiences. A Handbook for Heretics reconsiders some traditional Christian doctrines so as to broaden the church's view of spiritual reality. About the Author: John W. Sloat, a former Presbyterian minister, served churches in Pennsylvania and Ohio. He holds a B.A. from Denison University, 1954; an M.Div. from Princeton Seminary, 1957; and a Th.M. from Pittsburgh Seminary, 1977. Previous books include Lord, Make Us One (non-fiction, 1986) and The Other Half (fiction, 2001). Several of his sermons have been included in Pulpit Digest, a national preaching journal. He is married to Helen Burdick Sloat, a psychiatric nurse, and they have three children and eight grandchildren. A pianist and organist, Sloat also plays the French horn, is a scratch model builder and leads spirituality groups.

Book A Survival Guide for Heretics

Download or read book A Survival Guide for Heretics written by Aaron Van Voorhis and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2016-11-18 with total page 117 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: So many people are leaving the church today because of its hypocrisy, bigotry, and intellectual dishonesty. Such "heretics" find themselves in exile, wondering if there is anything worth holding onto regarding Christianity and faith. The answer is: Yes, but probably not in the way you think. A Survival Guide for Heretics reveals that the scandalous heart of Christianity is about the death of religion and the resurrection of a new way of living in the world called the kingdom of God. Drawing upon the fields of psychology, philosophy, and Radical Theology, this book guides readers step by step through their own spiritual journeys and reveals how they got where they're at and how to move forward. Along the way, Aaron Van Voorhis addresses some of the hardest questions perplexing Christians today and offers some surprising answers. As a pastor, Aaron uses his personal story and the story of his church as examples of how Christianity might be embodied in the twenty-first century. Deeply informed by the work of Peter Rollins and John D. Caputo, among others, A Survival Guide for Heretics is a very accessible and necessary book for anyone struggling with their faith.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When it comes to solving complex problems, we often perform elaborate rituals in the guise of best practices that promise a world of order, certainty, and control. But reality paints a far different picture, which practitioners are often reluctant to discuss. A witty yet rigorous journey through the seedy underbelly of organisational problem solving, The Heretics Guide to Best Practices pinpoints the reasons why best practices dont work as advertised and what can be done about it. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Secret Life: Being the Book of a Heretic "The very Devil's in the moon for mischief: There's not a day, the longest, not the twenty-first of June, Sees half the mischief in a quiet way On which three single hours of moonlight smile." At my age, alas! one no longer gets into mischief, either by moonlight or at mid summer, and yet to-day all the tricksey spirits of the invisible world are supposed to be abroad - tangling the horses' manes, souring the milk maid's cream, setting lovers by the ears. Some such frisky Puck stirs even peaceable middle-aged blood at this season to mild little secret sins, such as beginning a diary in which to set down one's private naughty views - the heresies one has grown too staid and cautious to give speech to any longer. • Pages : 133 pages

Download or read book The Heretic s Handbook written by Leo Cheeseman and published by . This book was released on 2005-09 with total page 133 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Heretic's Handbook by Leo V. Cheeseman will disturb most 'Christians' and stimulate all of them. The book challenges church members and other heretics (people who make choices) to reform the church that worships Mammon. Cheeseman looks at the successes of Satan in shaping the Holy Bible and the institutional church over the centuries. And, using common sense and inspiration, he presents insights and exercises to help readers identify their beliefs and discover many popular heresies that oppose the teachings and practice of Jesus. Accusing many "born again Christians" of being stillborn, Cheeseman encourages all his readers to develop plans for dynamic personal spiritual growth that will make them good and faithful servants of the creator god. The book emphasizes that our eternal life depends on what we believe and on what we do about our beliefs in this life.

Book The Heretic s Handbook

Download or read book The Heretic s Handbook written by Michael A. Soupios and published by . This book was released on 2013-04-01 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a rule, societies are rarely inclined to examine their own premises. Instead, people are routinely expected, if not compelled, to endorse the prevailing system of values and beliefs. While this approach may appear useful in terms of maintaining cultural harmony, in truth it constitutes a serious threat to a society's general health and well-being because no society can benefit from having mechanically endorsed views serve as authoritative norms. It is imperative, therefore, that we continuously ratify our cultural premises and that skeptics and contrarians be given pride of place in this process. The Heretic's Handbook seeks to address these concerns by encouraging a series of irreverent assessments in such areas as human obligation, religious conviction, friendship, economic pursuits, and the role of technology in modern life. Ultimately, readers are encouraged to approach this volume as a kind of whetstone aimed at restoring the edge to perspectives too often dulled by the sophistries of conventional belief.

Download or read book Know the Heretics written by Justin S. Holcomb and published by Zondervan. This book was released on 2014-04-29 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a lot of talk about heresy these days. The frequency and volume of accusations suggest that some Christians have lost a sense of the gravity of the word. On the other hand, many believers have little to no familiarity with orthodox doctrine or the historic distortions of it. What’s needed is a strong dose of humility and restraint, and also a clear and informed definition of orthodoxy and heresy. Know the Heretics provides an accessible “travel guide” to the most significant heresies throughout Christian history. As a part of the KNOW series, it is designed for personal study or classroom use, but also for small groups and Sunday schools wanting to more deeply understand the foundations of the faith. Each chapter covers a key statement of faith and includes a discussion of its historical context; a simple explanation of the unorthodox teaching, the orthodox response and a key defender; reflections of contemporary relevance; and discussion questions.

Book Heretic

Download or read book Heretic written by Jerome Tuccille and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2006 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Religious fanaticism and intolerance are perhaps the greatest evils afflicting the human race. Most of the violence in the world today and throughout history has been caused by major religions trying to exterminate those who don't share the same beliefs. In this eye-opening memoir, author Jerome Tuccille shares the story of his intensely personal struggle with the Roman Catholic Church. After turning in an essay on the Virgin Birth that claimed the Catholic Church dehumanized women, Tuccille is denounced as a heretic by the dean of a Catholic college. As a result, he abandons the religion of his youth and embarks on a global odyssey through Australia, Singapore, India, Europe, and the United States. Tuccille's adventures lead to a life of decadence and transcendental discovery. HERETIC dramatizes a tug-of-war between the sensual and the divine, revealing the constant struggle with spiritual questions that have stirred the minds and hearts of thoughtful people since time began.

Book Heretic

Download or read book Heretic written by Jeanna Kadlec and published by Harper. This book was released on 2022-10-25 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A memoir of leaving the evangelical Church and the search for radical new ways to build community, reckoning with religious trauma and Midwestern values as a means to unveil how evangelicalism directly impacts every American--religious or not--and has been a major force in driving our democracy towards fascism. Jeanna Kadlec knew what it meant to be faithful--in her marriage to a paster's son, in the comfortable life ahead of her, in her God--but there was no denying the truth that lived under that conviction: she was queer and, if she wanted to survive, she would need to leave behind the church and every foundational building block she knew. Heretic is a memoir of heretical rebirth. From the story of Lilith to celebrity purity rings, a newly married Kadlec interrogates how her indoctrination and years of piety intersects with her Midwest working-class upbringing as she navigates graduate school in Boston, revealing another insidious truth--that conservative Christianity has both built and undermined our political power structures, poisoned our pop culture, and infected the way we interact with one another. Weaving the personal with powerful critique, Heretic explores how we can radically abandon these painful systems by taking a sledgehammer to the comfortable. Whether searching for community in the face of millennial loneliness or wanting to reclaim a secular form of fellowship in everyday life, Kadlec envisions the brilliant possibilities that come with not only daring to want a different way but actually striking out and claiming it for ourselves.
