Book The Letters and Papers of Jan Hendrik Oort

Download or read book The Letters and Papers of Jan Hendrik Oort written by J.K. Katgert-Merkelijn and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The astronomer Jan Hendrik Oort (1900-1992) left behind an extensive collection of notes and correspondence, both on his research and on matters that concerned him in a variety of official functions. Upon Oort's death, the collection was augmented by more personal papers, letters, journals, and diaries. The resulting collection forms a rich source of information on many aspects of twentieth-century astronomy, in which Oort played such an important role. The scientific and personal material covers the entire span of time from Oort's early youth until his death. To make these papers accessible to a wide circle of users, the collection has now been catalogued and described; the result is presented in this volume. A name index and a subject index have been added to facilitate access. The inventory is accompanied by a short biographical sketch, and a number of photographs, mostly relating to Oort's career as a scientist. The original papers themselves are archived in the Leiden University Library.

The Diary offers an exploration of the form in its social, historical, and cultural-literary contexts with its own distinctive features, poetics, and rhetoric. The contributors to this volume examine theories and interpretations relating to writing and studying diaries; the formation of diary canons in the United Kingdom, France, United States, and Brazil; and the ways in which handwritten diaries are transformed through processes of publication and digitization. The authors also explore different diary formats, including the travel diary, the private diary, conflict diaries written during periods of crisis, and the diaries of the digital era, such as blogs. The Diary offers a comprehensive overview of the genre, synthesizing decades of interdisciplinary study to enrich our understanding of, research about, and engagement with the diary as literary form and historical documentation.

Book Walter Hines Page

Download or read book Walter Hines Page written by Ross Gregory and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2021-12-14 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This lucid study assesses Page's career as ambassador to Great Britain from 1913 to 1918. It reconsiders the famous publisher's impact on American diplomacy through an examination of British-American relations in that troubled period. Page, a friend of Woodrow Wilson and an intense Anglophile, devoted his major efforts to bringing the United States into the war on the side of the Allies and to cementing Anglo-American friendship. The book brings to bear information from all pertinent manuscript collections in the United States and introduces new information on British-American relations from recently-opened documents in British Foreign Office Archives. Written in a clear and lively style, the book revises earlier interpretations of the importance of Page's ambassadorial career, placing it in balance perspective.

Book A Mind of Her Own The Life of Karen Horney

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Karen Horney (1885-1952) is one of the great figures in psychoanalysis, an independent thinker who dared to take issue with Freud's views on women. One of the first female medical students in Germany, and one of the first doctors in Berlin to undergo psychoanalytic training, she emigrated to the United States in 1932 and became a leading figure in American psychoanalysis. She wrote several important books, including Neurosis and Human Growth and Our Inner Conflicts. Horney was a brilliant psychologist of women, whose work anticipated current interest in the narcissistic personality. "An excellent book, sophisticated in its judgments, and with a candor that does justice to [Quinn's] courageous subject." — Phyllis Grosskurth, The New York Review of Books "A richly contexted, thoroughly informed, and admirably forthright account of Horney's development and contribution." — Justin Kaplan "Excellent, sympathetic but not adulatory, clear about the theories and factions... rich in anecdotes." — Rosemary Dinnage, The New York Times Book Review "The whole book is wonderfully balanced. A terrific achievement." — Anton O. Kris, Boston Psychoanalytic Institute
