Book The Transport Amphorae and Trade of Cyprus

Download or read book The Transport Amphorae and Trade of Cyprus written by Mark L Lawall and published by Aarhus Universitetsforlag. This book was released on 2013-12-31 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Placed as a stepping stone on the sea route between Europe and the New East, Cyprus has always been a meeting place of many cultures. Though rarely united politically through many millennia of history - and for extended periods subject to foreign rule - the island nonetheless managed to maintain specific and unique identities. This publication seeks to throw new light on important aspects of the economy of Cyprus between c. 700 BC and AD 700 through a concerted study of the transport amphorae found in and around the island. These standardised containers of fired clay were commonly used for shipping foodstuffs from their places of production to the consumers in antiquity. Completely preserved or found only in fragments, such vessels are a prime source of information about the island's exports and imports of agricultural products, and ultimately about the fluctuations in the economy of Cyprus through a crucial millennium and a half of her history. The jars thus contribute both to our undertanding of the changing intensities of Cypriot connections with other centres around the Mediterranean and to the documentation of regional patterning within the island itself.

Book A Study of the Circulation of Ceramics in Cyprus from the 3rd Century BC to the 3rd Century AD

Download or read book A Study of the Circulation of Ceramics in Cyprus from the 3rd Century BC to the 3rd Century AD written by John Lund and published by Aarhus Universitetsforlag. This book was released on 2015-10-26 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first monograph devoted solely to the ceramics of Cyprus in the Hellenistic and Roman Periods. The island was by then no longer divided into kingdoms but unified politically, first under Ptolemaic Egypt and later as a province in the Roman Empire. Submission to foreign rule was previously thought to have diluted - if not obliterated - the time-honoured distinctive Cypriot character. The ceramic evidence suggests otherwise. The distribution of local and imported pottery in Cyprus points to the existence of several regional exchange networks, a division that also seems reflected by other evidence. The similarities in material culture, exchange patterns and preferential practices are suggestive of a certain level of regional collective self-awareness. From the 1st century BC onwards, Cyprus became increasingly engulfed by mass produced and standardized ceramic fine wares, which seem ultimately to have put many of the indigenous makers of similar products out of business - or forced them to modify their output. Also, the ceramic record gradually became less diverse during the Roman Period than before - developments which we today might be inclined to view as symptoms of an early form of globalisation.

Book Les royaumes de Chypre l preuve de l histoire

Download or read book Les royaumes de Chypre l preuve de l histoire written by Anna Cannavò and published by Ecole française d'Athènes. This book was released on 2018 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Within the context of a revival in studies on Iron Age Cyprus, this volume considers the theme of continuity, ruptures and changes that go hand in hand with the history of the Cypriot kingdoms of the first millennium BC. We examine political developments, emphasizing the transition from one mode of government to another; cultural evolutions, with the creation of pan-Cypriot koine from the geometric period, the birth of regional styles or the impact of Hellenism; the changes or continuity of the economic structures, with the dynamics of exploitation of the territory and their consequences on the evolution of the territorial frontiers of the Cypriot kingdoms. Without denying or diminishing the radicalness and importance of certain phenomena or events - from the Hellenization of the island to its conquest by the Lagids, to the rooting of the Phoenician presence in the archaic period and the growing Athenian influence during the classical era - the impact of these events is re-evaluated in the light of other essential factors, sometimes less visible and more difficult to grasp because of the bias of the available documentation. The "chyprocentric" perspective thus appears to be the best one through which to reconstruct, using new methodological and theoretical foundations, the analysis of the history and constitutive characteristics of the Cypriot kingdoms. Archaeologists, epigraphists, numismatists, historians, ceramologists, specialists from all scientific horizons thus shed light on this subject, either through the study of targeted cases, including several recent discoveries, or through highlighting characteristics common to all the kingdoms.

Book Transport Amphorae and Trade in the Eastern Mediterranean

Download or read book Transport Amphorae and Trade in the Eastern Mediterranean written by Jonas Eiring and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 552 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Transport amphorae were chosen as the theme of this colloquium because of their great potential for elucidating ancient economic history. As Peacock and Williams have noted, amphorae provide us not with anindex of the transportation of goods, but with direct witness of the movement of certain foodstuffs which were of considerable economic importance.... It is hard to conceive of any archaeological material better suited to further our understanding of Roman trade. The same could be said with equal conviction about Hellenistic trade. However, while the study of transport amphorae was already an established discipline in the 19th century, it has traditionally focused on amphora stamps. Even in the 1970s, excavators in the eastern Mediterranean were still disregarding-and even discarding-unstamped fragments. Yet if amphora studies remain somewhat in the realm of epigraphy, they have also seen a great deal of activity in the last decade and drawn increasing attention from archaeologists, historians and other researchers. Jonas Eiring and John Lund are both classical archaeologists. Lund is a curator at the National Museum of Denmark, Copenhagen.

Book The Oxford Handbook of the Archaeology of the Levant

Download or read book The Oxford Handbook of the Archaeology of the Levant written by Margreet L. Steiner and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2014-01-16 with total page 912 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Handbook aims to serve as a research guide to the archaeology of the Levant, an area situated at the crossroads of the ancient world that linked the eastern Mediterranean, Anatolia, Mesopotamia, and Egypt. The Levant as used here is a historical geographical term referring to a large area which today comprises the modern states of Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, western Syria, and Cyprus, as well as the West Bank, Gaza Strip, and the Sinai Peninsula. Unique in its treatment of the entire region, it offers a comprehensive overview and analysis of the current state of the archaeology of the Levant within its larger cultural, historical, and socio-economic contexts. The Handbook also attempts to bridge the modern scholarly and political divide between archaeologists working in this highly contested region. Written by leading international scholars in the field, it focuses chronologically on the Neolithic through Persian periods - a time span during which the Levant was often in close contact with the imperial powers of Egypt, Anatolia, Assyria, Babylon, and Persia. This volume will serve as an invaluable reference work for those interested in a contextualised archaeological account of this region, beginning with the 'agricultural revolution' until the conquest of Alexander the Great that marked the end of the Persian period.

Book excerpt: "The Cesnola Collection in The Metropolitan Museum of Art is the richest and most varied representation, outside Cyprus, of Cypriot antiquities. These works were purchased by the newly established Museum in the mid-1870s from General Luigi Palma di Cesnola, a Civil War cavalry officer who had amassed the objects while serving as the American consul on Cyprus." "This catalogue is published on the occasion of the opening of the Museum's four permanent galleries for ancient art from Cyprus. It is also the first scholarly publication since 1914 devoted to the Cesnola Collection (which totals approximately six thousand objects). The volume features some five hundred pieces from the collection, illustrated in new color photography. Dating from about 2500 B.C. to about A.D. 300, these works rank among the finest examples of Cypriot art from the prehistoric, Geometric, Archaic, Classical, Hellenistic, and Roman periods. Among the objects are monumental sculpture; weapons, tools, and domestic utensils; vases, lamps, and ritual paraphernalia; dedicatory figurines; engraved sealstones and jewelry; and luxury objects."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc.
