Book The Hellenic Kingdom and the Greek Nation Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Hellenic Kingdom and the Greek Nation Classic Reprint written by George Finlay and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-16 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Hellenic Kingdom and the Greek Nation The crime therefore, of its own suicide, must rest with the Turkish government, but the deflects of the socialsystem of Turkey, which must soon cause a dissolution of the empire, are inherent in the circumstance of the pcpu lation of these countries. Could each race of people in this extensive realm, be separated from the rest by some all powerful fiat, and those who speak a peculiar language, or are amalgamated by a similarity of usages, institutions, and religion, be entirely kept apart by geographical boundaries, then, perhaps, it would not be a hopeless task to attempt the political improvement of the Turkish Empire by some systematic combinations. As any such wild speculation is, however, not likely to be realized, and as the Turk, Greek, Arnaout, Servian, Armenian, Curd, Arab, and Drusee, are likely to remain for ages mingled together in different parts of the Ottoman Empire, it is probable that the shifts of diplomatic convenience will have a more direct influence on the fate of the provinces and people of the Turkish Empire than any considerations relating to the feelings and prospects of its population. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Hellenic Kingdom and the Greek Nation Time was, when the mere announcement of a work on Greece, was received by the American public with interest; and any thing relating to the country, was read with avidity. That time, however, has gone by; the imperfect narrative of the Greek Revolution is recorded in the rarely consulted page of history; and the sufferings and atrocities which saddened and disgraced it, as well as the heroism and the devotion which dignified and adorned it, are already forgotten. But, that revolution was only the birth-day of Modern Greece, and rife as it was with scenes of thrilling interest, the seven years that have elapsed since its completion, afford more important study to the statesman, and more interesting speculation to the philanthropist. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Greek Life and Thought: From the Age of Alexander to the Roman Conquest In'the second place, as this book was not in tended exclusively for scholars, it became necessary to introduce some account of the history and litera ture of the age as the background for the estimate of life and manners, which is my main Object. I might possibly have assumed a knowledge of this history and literature in the scholar, though, even for scholars, the epoch is one of great complication and obscurity, lying outside the bounds of ordinary classical reading; but, from the general reader, this special knowledge could not possibly be expected. Hence there is more actual history in the present volume than in its predecessor, and its limits are marked, not by great authors, but by great political events. Book Greek History Classic Reprint

Download or read book Greek History Classic Reprint written by Heinrich Swoboda and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-13 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Greek History Professor swoboda has won so high a rank among students of classical antiquity that it would be superfluous, and indeed presumptuous, for his translator to recall that distinguished scholar's excellent works to the memory of the learned reader; and the little History now presented in English dress, though addressed to a less academic audience, is fully equal to the author's reputation. It has the rare merits of succinctness and lucidity, however imperfectly these ex cellences may be conveyed in translation and in addition it brings the history of Greece down to the present day. To most readers the story of ancient Greece is a fairy tale from olden times, at best half romance, and severed by an im passable chasm from the reality of the modern age. This conception is thoroughly false; the history of the Greeks, like that of the Jews, to which it has manifold points of likeness, has passed without a break from the classical into the imperial, the medieval, and the modern eras, and bids fair to become no mean chapter in the story of the nations that has yet to be unfolded. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Greece in Evolution: Studies Prepared Under the Auspices of the French League for the Defence of the Rights of Hellenism I have been asked by my friends of the French League for the defence of Hellenism to contribute a few words by way of preface to an English translation of their book, La Gre'ce, saying publicly that which I had privately written to them on the appearance last year of the original volume. In this country a Greek Committee, having the same object as that uniting the friends of Greece in Paris, has shown activity on three occasions in the last thirty-two years, and will doubt less be reconstituted. It has at least prevented political disregard of modern Hellenic civilisation. The selfish interests of the Great Powers and the territorial claims of pushing peoples have stood in the way of Greece, hampered as she is by the narrow limits assigned to the independent nucleus of the nation at the moment when international recognition of existence could no longer be denied. Independence had been won by her dauntless heroes, and was indeed at first curtailed through the intervention of the Powers. Since that date the Greek Kingdom has begun to grow, and, now, to thrive. The protected Republic of the Ionian Islands passed to Greece at the desire of the citizens, and by the consent of Great Britain, the successor of Russia in the occupa tion'of Corfu and protection of the scattered group. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lives of Greek Statesmen: Solon-Chemistokles The history of a people is often best studied in the lives of individual citizens; and this is perhaps to a larger extent the case in the ancient Greek world than elsewhere. A Greek nation, in one sense of the word, there never was; but some individual Greek citizens proposed to themselves and acted on a policy which, if consistently carried out, might have had for its results the growth of a vigorous national life. Apart from this there is the personal interest which gathers round the career of great men, and which should lead us to examine most carefully the grounds of the judgements passed upon them.
