Download or read book Handbook for Teaching English in Mexico and Central America written by J. L. Nelson and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2000-12-19 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Want to teach English in Mexico? Don't know where to start? Does Costa Rica sound good? Are there jobs there? Want to drive to Honduras? Is it safe? This 'Handbook' will answer these questions and many more. It is a fact-filled guide for finding teaching jobs in Mexico and Central America. It describes the job market and gives concrete information about where and how to look. There's also a mini-course on teaching English to help you in those all-important job interviews. And once you've found that job, the 'Handbook' provides practical teaching suggestions to help you survive. But it doesn't stop there. There are four personal commentaries by people who have done just what you want to do. And throughout the 'Handbook,' the author draws on her experiences from more than ten years of teaching (and driving) south of the border to give you that edge.
Download or read book Text Complexity and Reading Comprehension Tests written by Erik Castello and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2008 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on the analysis of a specially compiled corpus of internationally recognized English as a foreign language (EFL) reading tests at different levels of proficiency, this volume explores the relation between the complexity of written texts and the difficulty of reading comprehension tests. It brings together linguistic investigations into the text-inherent complexity of the tests and a study of the data derived from their administration to groups of Italian university students. The study of text complexity draws on corpus linguistics, text linguistics and systemic functional linguistics. Both quantitative and qualitative analyses are carried out on the language used in the reading texts and in the related tasks that make up the corpus of tests. The assessment of test difficulty, on the other hand, is informed by research on language testing, and, in particular, by findings and methodologies of Classical Test Theory and Item Response Theory. Relevant aspects of these theories are used to analyze and interpret both the data obtained from the administration of the tests and the data collected by means of feedback questionnaires completed by test takers. The application of such diverse methodologies and the subsequent comparison of the results of the analyses has brought out interesting correlations between text-inherent complexity, perceived test difficulty and actual test difficulty.

Download or read book Utilising Fiction to Promote English Language Acquisition written by Suhair Al Alami and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2013-07-29 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The teaching of English in the United Arab Emirates is based upon the communicative approach and aims to enable EFL students to employ language skills for communication purposes, as appropriate. Personal experience and the author’s colleagues’ observations, however, reveal that a number of EFL university students fail to achieve adequate communicative competence, which, in turn, does not qualify them to exploit the foreign language of English as required by their curricula as well as by today’s world. Central to university education in the United Arab Emirates is critical thinking. It seems reasonable, then, to assume that EFL university students are well-equipped to tackle a reading text and to handle a writing task, demonstrating through such activities an adequate repertoire of critical thinking skills. Personal experience and the author’s colleagues’ observations, however, indicate that this does not apply to a number of EFL university students studying in the country. Seeking an effective remedy, the author argues that utilising literature in the EFL classroom would be beneficial in terms of many essential aspects. Based on a three-year research project conducted at a private university in Dubai involving a number of EFL students, the book concludes with some suggestions with regards to what criteria to adopt when utilising literary texts. The current book, as such, is expected to be of use and interest to: applied linguists (as the study proposes an approach to integrating the teaching of language, literature, communication and critical thinking, with the ultimate goal of promoting communicative competence and enhancing critical thinking on the part of EFL learners); curricula designers (since the study introduces a course for the enhancement of communicative competence and critical thinking); and EFL instructors (because the study offers instructional material which can be adopted or adapted when teaching EFL university students).
