Book excerpt: * Including an annotation about the history of the Reformed Churches The Heidelberg Catechism is a Protestant confessional document taking the form of a series of questions and answers, for use in teaching Reformed Christian doctrine. It has been translated into many languages and is regarded as one of the most influential of the Reformed catechisms. The Catechism is divided into fifty-two sections, called "Lord's Days," which were designed to be taught on each of the 52 Sundays of the year. The Synod of Heidelberg approved the catechism in 1563. In the Netherlands, the Catechism was approved by the Synods of Wesel (1568), Emden (1571), Dort (1578), the Hague (1586), as well as the great Synod of Dort of 1618-1619, which adopted it as one of the Three Forms of Unity, together with the Belgic Confession and the Canons of Dort. Download or read book Drawn to Freedom written by Eberhard Busch and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 2010-06-28 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The primary purpose of Drawn to Freedom is not to understand the Heidelberg Catechism, Eberhard Busch explains, but rather through it to understand what it means for us to believe in the merciful and just triune God. This is our God today, who always was our God, and will be our God tomorrow. This book, then, is a carefully developed, wide-ranging exploration of what it means to be a Christian in today s world. God is so committed to freedom, writes Busch, that he wants to give humans their own freedom. To unfold what this proposition means for Christians, Busch reexamines the Heidelberg Catechism of 1563 from a modern perspective and uses its question-and-answer format to propose an understanding of God s ways that still holds true for the twenty-first century. Busch also invites into the conversation past and present theologians, philosophers, musicians, and scientists with significant questions, objections, and alternative views. He probes such issues as self-understanding, personal worth, sin and forgiveness, hope and despair, and faith and love all in relation to the freedom and deliverance that he believes God desires to afford us.

Book The Heidelberg Catechism 450th Anniversary Edition

Download or read book The Heidelberg Catechism 450th Anniversary Edition written by The Reformed Church in the United States and published by . This book was released on 2013-07-06 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edition of the Heidelberg Catechism is produced by the Reformed Church in the United States. It is reprinted with all of the references in the New King James Version of the Bible and the updated language adopted by the Synod of the RCUS in 2011.This small book is one of the finest fruits of the Reformation and epitomizes its essential teaching. Holding forth faith in Jesus Christ as our only comfort in life and in death, it presents, very personally and eloquently, what is necessary to know that we may live and die in that comfort. While many played a role in its composition, it was especially Zacharias Ursinus and Caspar Olevianus who imparted its theological content and practical spirit. Having received hearty approval by the pastors and teachers in Heidelberg, it was published on January 19, 1563. Its influence in Germany, the Netherlands, Hungary, and beyond exceeded all expectations. It was welcomed by Reformed believers everywhere. Today, those who are yearning for a beautiful statement of biblical truth will find this work a treasure. It remains as fresh as when it was first published 450 years ago.

Book The Second Helvetic Confession Annotated Edition

Download or read book The Second Helvetic Confession Annotated Edition written by Heinrich Bullinger and published by Jazzybee Verlag. This book was released on 2012 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: * Including an annotation about the history of the Reformed Churches Helvetic Confessions, the name of two documents expressing the common belief of the Reformed churches of Switzerland. The Second Helvetic Confession (Latin: Confessio Helvetica posterior) was written by Bullinger in 1562 and revised in 1564 as a private exercise. It came to the notice of Elector Palatine Frederick III, who had it translated into German and published. It gained a favorable hold on the Swiss churches, who had found the First Confession too short and too Lutheran. It was adopted by the Reformed Church not only throughout Switzerland but in Scotland (1566), Hungary (1567), France (1571), Poland (1578), and next to the Heidelberg Catechism is the most generally recognized confession of the Reformed Church. Book The Heidelberg Catechism in English and German

Download or read book The Heidelberg Catechism in English and German written by Shengqiang Liu and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2023-02-16 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Herein contains a translation of the "Heidelberger Katechismus - Catechismus Oder Christlicher Vnderricht, wie der in Kirchen vnd Schulen der Churfürstlichen Pfaltz getrieben wirdt" as is it was composed under the godly Elector Frederick III in 1563 by two theologians in their late twenties; 28 year old, Zacharias Ursinus (1534-1583), professor of theology at the Heidelberg University and 26 year old, Caspar Olevianus (1536-1587) preacher to the Elector. Patterned after the structure of the book of Romans, each part of the catechism merits a translation which desires proximity to the flow of Paul's language in Scripture and the trinitarian treasures of the Nicaea and Chalcedon. There are thus, rare but occasional added parenthetical translations of important concepts or words, so that the modern reader might not stumble over either ancient or post-reformation language and dogma. The translator is a candidate for doctoral promotion in the Faculty of Theology at the University of Heidelberg itself. This translation was undertaken with great pleasure for the sake of modern readership and the furthering of Gospel witness and formation, the thought of which overshadowed any difficulty in translating such a text. I have sought to make the message of the catechism as clear as the language and pray that it will be of spiritual profit for all who are willing to receive its comfort.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Heidelberg Catechism: In Its Newest Light This work on the Heidelberg catechism is intended to give the new light that has been thrown on the cate chism, mainly within the last fifty years, -since the Ter centenary Jubilee was held, in 1863, by the Reformed Church in the United States. However, it also includes some light previous to that time, but which does not seem to have attracted the attention of the American writers on the catechism. A number of the chapters have been delivered as Addresses during the 3soth Anniversary of the Catechism. The form of address, therefore, appears in a number of places, especially in the last two chapters. Because de livered as Addresses, there is occasionally a reduplication of thought and expression.
