Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Hebrew Student's Commentary on Zechariah: Hebrew and LXX; With Excursus on Syllable-Dividing, Metheg, Initial Dagesh, and Siman Rapheh Since the founding of the Theological Tripos Examiners have frequently complained, that the Candidates for it do not, as a rule, take pains to acquire an accurate knowledge of even the Elements of the Sacred Tongue. This has been, doubtless, in great measure the fault of the Curriculum, to the requirements of which they have been obliged to conform their studies. We have every reason to hope that from the inauguration of the New Regulations for that Tripos will date a new era in the Hebrew scholarship of the University, and that the Theological Tripos will thenceforth send forth into the world scholars as sound in their knowledge of the Elements of Hebrew as did the 'Voluntary Examination' which it superseded. This Student's Commentary has been written with a view to aiding this New Scheme of Theological Studies. The plan of it is as follows: Words and sentences are treated from a purely grammatical point of view, and in so doing no difficulties have been wittingly avoided, but, rather, some have at times been intentionally raised, when by so doing an opportunity has been afforded of explaining some of the minutiae of Hebrew Syntax. Unpointed Hebrew, and Transliteration, have been freely used from considerations of economy. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book God Remembers written by Charles L. Feinberg and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2003-06-20 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If any portion of the Old Testament has come in for undeservedly scant attention, it has been the minor prophets. Their significance has been obscured by our neglect. Among the major messages of these prophets, that of Zechariah shines forth with special prominence. Zechariah's prophecy is given primarily to console and comfort weary Israel. The nation's initial enthusiasm for rebuilding the temple and resettling the land had waned. With growing opposition to the temple reconstruction, they had turned to the pursuit of their own affairs. Zechariah (along with Haggai) arduously seeks to bring Israel from their indifference to a complete spiritual return to the Lord. The prophet's pronouncement is of a coming day of unparalleled glory - a day when Messiah will rule the entire earth from Jerusalem. The book's major eschatological importance can be clearly seen for it reveals a wealth of information about Messiah and about the future and role of Israel during the important Day of Jehovah. The prophet provides this information for us in concise, epitomized form. In 'God Remembers,' Charles Feinberg brings a high level of scholarship to his study of this significant and exegetically difficult book. His familiarity with and love for the Old Testament can be readily seen in his thorough and readable exposition of the message of Zechariah. In addition to the main body of the commentary, 'God Remembers' includes an informative introduction, thorough scripture and subject indexes, and an annotated selected bibliography, further enhancing the usefulness of this important reference work.

Book Haggai Zechariah 1 8

Download or read book Haggai Zechariah 1 8 written by Carol L. Meyers and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 588 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Haggai and Zechariah 1-8, Volume 25B in the acclaimed Anchor Bible part of the Scripture known as the Minor Prophets, were written during a critical period in Israel's history, the momentous return of the Jews from Babylonian exile. Following the conquest of Babylon by the Persian Empire, the Israelites sought to reestablish their ethnic and religious legacy in Judah. This was a time of profound turmoil and uncertainty, and Haggai and Zechariah provided a crucial measure of support and inspiration. They rallied Israel's energies and exhorted their fellow countrymen to heed the word of God. Under their guidance the Jews restored the Temple at Jerusalem, which had been destroyed by the armies of Nebuchadnezzar. Together the two prophets guided Israel through an important transitional epoch, and reconciled the influences of Persia's dominion with the sacred traditions of the Hebrew people. In this illuminating new translation and commentary, Carol and Eric Meyers consider the Book of Haggai and the first eight chapters of the Book of Zechariah in a linguistic, social, and historical context. They underscore the literary artistry, the political acumen, and the prophetic authority of these fascinating volumes that proved so vital to the survival of Israel and the preservation of the Jewish faith.
