So every day in the year since Wayne's tragic boating accident, she's been watching and waiting... Rescued from a storm at sea, Chase can't remember who he is or where he came from—so he travels from port to port, looking for clues to his past. A twist of fate sends him to the small Florida town of Sugar Bay, and Maddie’s sure her angel has arrived. Only Chase’s presence is anything but angelic. Not only is he pushing Maddie to break out of her family’s dysfunctional cocoon and see the truth about her marriage, he’s waking up parts of her she didn’t know even existed. A man without a past and identity shouldn’t fall for a waif of a woman, especially when the glimmers of memory he gets reveal a reckless sailor and a possible murder. And while he wants to protect her, he’s created a monster—because Maddie’s seeing this through. As Chase's shocking past and true identity begin to emerge, it leads Maddie to a disturbing mystery, unexpected danger—and the determination to fight for a love she knows can only be Heaven sent... Book A Stranger in the House of God

Download or read book A Stranger in the House of God written by John Koessler and published by Zondervan. This book was released on 2009-08-30 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Growing up the son of agnostics, John Koessler saw a Catholic church on one end of the street and a Baptist on the other. In the no-man’s land between the two, this curious outside wondered about the God they worshipped—and began a lifelong search to comprehend the grace and mystery of God. A Stranger in the House of God addresses fundamental questions and struggles faced by spiritual seekers and mature believers. Like a contemporary Pilgrim’s Progress, it traces the author’s journey and explores his experiences with both charismatic and evangelical Christianity. It also describes his transformation from religious outsider to ordained pastor. John Koessler provides a poignant and often humorous window into the interior of the soul as he describes his journey from doubt and struggle with the church to personal faith

Book The German Stranger

Download or read book The German Stranger written by William H. F. Altman and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2012-06-07 with total page 620 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Leo Strauss's connection with Martin Heidegger and Carl Schmitt suggests a troubling proximity to National Socialism but a serious critique of Strauss must begin with F. H. Jacobi. While writing his dissertation on this apparently Christian opponent of the Enlightenment, Strauss discovered the tactical principles that would characterize his lifework: writing between the lines, a faith-based critique of rationalism, the deliberate secularization of religious language for irreligious purposes, and an "all or nothing" antagonism to middling solutions. Especially the latter is distinctive of his Zionist writings in the 1920s where Strauss engaged in an ongoing polemic against Cultural Zionism, attacking it first from an orthodox, and then from an atheist's perspective. In his last Zionist article (1929), Strauss mentions "the Machiavellian Zionism of a Nordau that would not fear to use the traditional hope for a Messiah as dynamite." By the time of his "change of orientation," National Socialism was being led by a nihilistic "Messiah" while Strauss had already radicalized Schmitt's "political theology" and Heidegger's deconstruction of the ontological Tradition. Central to Strauss's advance beyond the smartest Nazis is his "Second Cave" in which he claimed modern thought is imprisoned: only by escaping Revelation can we recover "natural ignorance." By using pseudo-Platonic imagery to illustrate what anti-Semites called "Jewification," Strauss attempted to annihilate the common ground, celebrated by Hermann Cohen, between Judaism and Platonism. Unlike those who attacked Plato for devaluing nature at the expense of the transcendent Idea, the émigré Strauss effectively employed a new "Plato" who was no more a Platonist than Nietzsche or Heidegger had been. Central to Strauss's "Platonic political philosophy" is the mysterious protagonist of Plato's Laws whom Strauss accurately recognized as the kind of Socrates whose fear of death would have caused him to flee the hemlock. Any reader who recognizes the unbridgeable gap between the real Socrates and Plato’s Athenian Stranger will understand why “the German Stranger” is the principal theoretician of an atheistic re-enactment of religion, of which genus National Socialism is an ultra-modern species.

Book Recognizing the Stranger

Download or read book Recognizing the Stranger written by Kasper Bro Larsen and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2008-04-30 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recognizing the Stranger is the first monographic study of recognition scenes and motifs in the Gospel of John. The recognition type-scene (anagnōrisis) was a common feature in ancient drama and narrative, highly valued by Aristotle as a touching moment of truth, e.g., in Oedipus’ tragic self-discovery and Odysseus’ happy homecoming. The book offers a reconstruction of the conventions of the genre and argues that it is one of the most recurrent and significant literary forms in the Gospel. When portraying Jesus as the divine stranger from heaven, the Gospel employs and transforms the formal and ideological structures of the type-scene in order to show how Jesus’ true identity can be recognized behind the half-mask of his human appearance.

Book excerpt: Accessible, challenging, funny, and one of the best reads on how to love others in any situation. Love and hospitality can change the way you see the world and others. That's exactly what modern-day theologian, Richard Beck, experienced when he first led a Bible study at a local maximum security prison. Beck believed the promise of Matthew 25 that states when we visit the prisoner, we encounter Jesus. Sure enough, God met Beck in prison. With his signature combination of biblical reflection, theological reasoning, and psychological insight, Beck shows how God always meets us when we entertain the marginalized, the oppressed, and the refugee. Stories from Beck's own life illustrate this truth -- God comes to him in the poor, the crippled, the smelly. Psychological experiments show how we are predisposed to appreciate those who are similar to us and avoid those who are unlike us. The call of the gospel, however, is to override those impulses with compassion, to "widen the circle of our affection." In the end, Beck turns to the Little Way of St. Thérèse of Lisieux for guidance in doing even the smallest acts with kindness, and he lays out a path that any of us can follow.

Book excerpt: A Stranger's Journey brings you a novel way to have a group study and fellowship with your friends. After years of leading his men's bible study group, David Thompson became convicted that there was a lack of material for those who want to study and have fellowship on a regular basis. Taking his thoughts and true life situations, David has written short devotionals that are thought provoking and guaranteed to create conversation. His use of humor and satire will hold your interest and give you insight into one stranger's life journey. You may agree or disagree with his thought process, but at least it will make you think. David W. Thompson, in his own words, is the most unusual bank president in the United States. Besides being a banker for over 30 years, David is an ordained minister, church elder and men's bible study leader. Other accomplishments include a black belt in Tae Kwon Do and qualifying to carry a concealed weapon. Mr. Thompson holds a Bachelors degree in Psychology from Southwest Baptist University in Bolivar, Missouri. But above all else, David is a sold out, totally dedicated follower of Jesus Christ.
