Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Heather Lintie: Being Poetical Pieces, Spiritual and Temporal, Chiefly in the Scottish Dialect Such, imperfectly stated, are the grounds upon which I ap peal to a generous and sympathising public for further patron age, and to the penetrating critic for the favour of his kind indulgence, at least to the same extent as that generally con ceded to the illiterate working man's muse. Seeing my para mount object in thus appearing before the public, I trust my readers, though they may be at times inclined to condemn my presumption and untaught composition, will at least give me credit for and applaud my humble but honest motives. They need not look for high-flown sentiment or ambitious verse in the following pages. I do not attempt to soar to heaven's gates, singing like the sky-lark but my song is lowly and homely as the lilt of the little warbler whose name I borrow for the Title-page: and I fondly trust that it will be found, like it, true to nature, as it certainly is the spontaneous out pourings of my heart. Book excerpt: This book sheds new light on James Hogg, the Scottish poet (1770-1835), going beyond the 'Ettrick Shepherd' stereotype. By focussing on Hogg's poetry (Scottish Pastorals, The Queen's Wake, Jacobite Relics, Queen Hynde, Pilgrims of the Sun) it shows that his work, and the critical response to it, was significantly shaped by the concept of the autodidact: a working-class writer who was considered to be a poet of 'Nature's Making'. The image of the autodidact is pursued from its beginnings - Ramsay's Gentle Shepherd, Macpherson's Ossian, Burns as 'ploughman poet' - through its development in the nineteenth century, to its last gasps in the twentieth. Poets considered include Isobel Pagan, Janet Little, William Tennant, Allan Cunningham, Robert Tannahill, Janet Hamilton, Ellen Johnston, Elizabeth Hartley, Alexander Anderson, David Gray, David Wingate and James Young Geddes. Despite facing difficulties, autodidacts produced some of the most innovative and exciting poetry of the nineteenth century. The author argues that the autodidactic tradition, exemplified by Hogg, nurtured the creative vigour manifested in twentieth-century Scottish poetry. While Scotland's autodidacts shared poetic concerns and techniques, they were characterised, above all, by diversity of poetic voice.

Book excerpt: Dumfries and Galloway is one of the least-known regions of Scotland. Despite memories and traditions to match those of Gaelic-speaking Scotland, it has been seriously understudied. This innovative, ground-breaking study looks mainly at the everyday lives and culture of people in this region during a period of profound agricultural, industrial and demographic change. In doing so, it uncovers new information about a wide range of topics in local history, including food, festivals and folklore, music, mining, the development of towns and villages, population, smuggling, the experience of migration, and the question of identity. All of the contributors to the book are specialists in their fields and have an in-depth knowledge of the region through life and work.
