Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mystical Musings This little book is not published to sell (if it were it would probably be a failure), but merely as a gratuity with the hope of prolonging the memory of friendship after that friendship itself has ceased to be. Simplicity and sincerity has been its paramount point. Acknowledgment of it is not even necessary, unless it affords the recipient personal pleasure in doing so. May its truth and philosophy console and comfort you when I lie, at last, in "the dreamless sleep that lulls the dead." Book excerpt: Excerpt from Musings on the Way Some of the poems contained in this volume having been so kindly received in the form in which they originally appeared, the author ventures to call the fugi tive verses home, and to send them forth together in a new dress. Many of the poems, however, including Barivah, appear in print for the first time. Book Healthful Musings for Evening Hours Classic Reprint

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Healthful Musings for Evening Hours These scraps have been to their author musings of song in hours requiring relaxation, after many trying ones of pastoral labour; their pretensions are consequently small in a literary point of view. The effect of general education is, infallibly, to produce a thirst for reading; nor is it possible to confine young Christians to thoughts ever grave as the sermon. Books will be had, and abundance of the most pernicious kind exist, ready at hand. Should these slight pages be found a little useful, to supply the need, with healthful recreation for the soul as well as the mind, they will not be wasted; and the author trusts they are of a character to have God's blessing in the Spirit, for Christ's sake. Apologies and explanations; efforts to please, and aims to be correct; all insincerity and affectation lies to the heart, the maddest lies of all. Freedom. We may be so bound that we can not move one step upon this earth, yet at the same time we may be meeting with adventures in the worlds of space. None but the unpoetic are fettered. Shadows. Shadows of cheated dreams within us stalk across the glitter of our fortunate days. All the jeweled ribbons of praise heaped together can not pay for a heart's broken ideals. The First Lesson. In this world, it is not what we want to do, but what we are truly able to do, which makes us worthy and successful. This is the first lesson of intelligence. It is a hard and disagreeable lesson, but after it has once been thoroughly learned and digested, all the other lessons which are given to us by life become easy and pleasant. What is the dew but the tears of heaven? She has a thousand ways to charm us, do we but see them and understand; and yet, with all the learning we may in any way possess we are but infants in the cradle of her great heart, be it calm or storm, sunshine or shadow, night or day. Or any one of her many changes; it is but the vibration of a great harp tuned to to the melodies of heaven, and in her mountains, fields and skies a healing balm for the worn and weary. Tis noble to extend to another Whose soul is bowed in grief The hand of a helpful brother, And bring to his heart relief. Cheer him with words kindly spoken, Give him what assistance yon can; Heaven's most precious token Is love for our fellow-man. The joy of this life is living For the good we may truly do; There is happiness in giving, For charity ennobles you. Why should the trials of others Be beds whose channels are dry, I The fount that grief uncovers Be hidden away in the eye? 'Tis strange that we never discover The blessings strewn over our way, Until it's too late to recover The jewels we've thrown away. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Poems and Aphorisms: A Woodman's Musings The author of these poems was born in Wilmington, Mass., Nov. 3, 1824.When eleven years of age his parents removed to Amherst, N. H., and settled on the banks of the Souhegan river, one of the most lovely and romantic streams in New England. The word "Souhegan" in the Indian tongue means "crooked," and the stream does not belie its name. Here he learned to swim, fish, boat and trap; here he fell in love with Nature at a very early age. His "book" education consisted of a few short terms at the typical "Little Red Schoolhouse" of New England, and was finished prior to his 19th year. In mastering the "three R's" he had no time for grammar, and that was left out. In early life he learned the trade of house painter; but the greater part of his life has been spent in the forest, as wood-chopper, hunter and trapper. Was married in his 24th year, and still lives with the wife of his youth. In 1858 he left Amherst, and after two years residence in Stoneham, arrived at Mill Glen in the southerly part of Winchendon, Mass., where he now resides. These poems were composed for the most part while at work, or when walking; many of them coming as inspirations, with little effort on his part. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memories and Musings When Friend Meets Friend We love the scene where friend meets friend - The quickened step, the mutual gaze, The proffered hand, the heart ablaze. No vicious plot, All ills forgot, When friend meets friend. Past scenes return when friend meets friend - Perhaps a day has passed or more, Perhaps a year, mayhap a score. Years count for naught, Past scene's the thought When friend meets friend. Time takes to wings when friend meets friend - A chat or two, an hour or so, A chore deferred, the sun sinks low, The day is done Ere it's begun When friend meets friend. The mask is raised when friend meets friend - Those secrets held to self most dear One must confide to trusted ear. One joy, one fear, One common tear When friend meets friend. Two Pens At the conference table over the sea Two pens were reflecting in deep reverie. One pen was from Krupp, quite boisterous and bold, And one was of Bethlehem steel, we were told. Said the pen from Krupp to the Bethlehem steel, "Let's confide in each other and our histories reveal." So these are the stories they tell to each other, The pen of Krupp and his Bethlehem brother, As they lay on the table end to end, Where the League of Nation's men have penned.
