Book The Heart of the Anti Vivisectionist Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Heart of the Anti Vivisectionist Classic Reprint written by Charles Sidney Bluemel and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-12-13 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Heart of the Anti-Vivisectionist The extermination of these pests seems reasonable and justifiable to the average mind; nevertheless there are persons who object to the measure on moral grounds. Poisoning rats and catching them in traps might cause suffering; wherefore one should refrain. The same line of argument of course applies to all other lower animals. I would not have one mouse painfully vivisected to save the greatest of human beings, or the life dearest to me. This is an extraordinary statement, but it was made by a witness before the British Royal Commission on Vivisection, and it exemplifies the anti-vivisectionist's point of view. A little analysis resolves this line of thought into the utmost absurdity: A man has a tapeworm. If he nurtures the tapeworm, it will have a billion eggs cap able of becoming tapeworms, each having a billion eggs, and so on. The supply of human beings for those tape worms would not be adequate. It is therefore clear that lower forms of animal life must be destroyed in order that human life may be possible and tolerable. We must destroy pests that spread disease. We must destroy flesh-eating animals, lest they destroy us. We must kill plant-eating animals for food; and if not for food, for our own welfare, for otherwise they would consume the only form of food that would remain to us. Man is enjoined to do these things in the Bible, which in its first chapter bids him subdue the earth and have dominion over every living thing. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Vivisection in America Rather than cause the enactment of a restrictive law in the United States, the best-informed opponents of Vivi section would defer all legislation on the subject until, through continued agitation, by the introduction of bills for its total suppression in the State legislatures and in Congress, and in every other possible way, the time shall arrive when the approach of civilization will make it possi ble for such bills to become laws: which laws. In a civilized age, there would never be occasion to invoke. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Vivisection Question Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Vivisection Question Classic Reprint written by Albert Leffingwell and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-02 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Vivisection Question I. By Vivisection is meant experimentation of any kind, painful or painless, made upon a living creature for an alleged scientific purpose. II. Within certain limitations and to a certain extent, the utility of animal experimentation makes it justifiable and right. III. The abuses to which the practice is liable are so great, that vivisection should be regulated by law, and placed under the control and supervision of the State. In order to prove need of the legal regulation here advocated, it has been necessary to refer to cruelties and abuses, incident to the practice as now carried on. The revelation of these has induced criticism; but I cannot see how otherwise, there could be adduced any proof of necessity for legal control. In one respect, the task made necessary by controversy on this subject has been exceedingly distasteful. It is by no means a pleasant literary employment to point out the inaccuracies or to demonstrate the blunders made bv men of national repute in their opposition to the regula tion of experimentation. But no fact is more clearly apparent than that too eager laudation of vivisection without control has evoked a carelessness of statement. Book The Doctor in the Victorian Novel

Download or read book The Doctor in the Victorian Novel written by Dr Tabitha Sparks and published by Ashgate Publishing, Ltd.. This book was released on 2013-04-28 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the character of the doctor as her subject, Tabitha Sparks follows the decline of the marriage plot in the Victorian novel. As Victorians came to terms with the scientific revolution in medicine of the mid-to-late nineteenth century, the novel's progressive distance from the conventions of the marriage plot can be indexed through a rising identification of the doctor with scientific empiricism. A narrative's stance towards scientific reason, Sparks argues, is revealed by the fictional doctor's relationship to the marriage plot. Thus, novels that feature romantic doctors almost invariably deny the authority of empiricism, as is the case in George MacDonald's Adela Cathcart. In contrast, works such as Wilkie Collins's Heart and Science, which highlight clinically minded or even sinister doctors, uphold the determining logic of science and, in turn, threaten the novel's romantic plot. By focusing on the figure of the doctor rather than on a scientific theme or medical field, Sparks emulates the Victorian novel's personalization of tropes and belief systems, using the realism associated with the doctor to chart the sustainability of the Victorian novel's central imaginative structure, the marriage plot. As the doctors Sparks examines increasingly stand in for the encroachment of empirical knowledge on a morally formulated artistic genre, their alienation from the marriage plot and its interrelated decline succinctly herald the end of the Victorian era and the beginning of Modernism.
