Book excerpt: The award-winning New York Times bestseller about the extraordinary things that can happen when we harness the power of both the brain and the heart Growing up in the high desert of California, Jim Doty was poor, with an alcoholic father and a mother chronically depressed and paralyzed by a stroke. Today he is the director of the Center for Compassion and Altruism Research and Education (CCARE) at Stanford University, of which the Dalai Lama is a founding benefactor. But back then his life was at a dead end until at twelve he wandered into a magic shop looking for a plastic thumb. Instead he met Ruth, a woman who taught him a series of exercises to ease his own suffering and manifest his greatest desires. Her final mandate was that he keep his heart open and teach these techniques to others. She gave him his first glimpse of the unique relationship between the brain and the heart. Doty would go on to put Ruth’s practices to work with extraordinary results—power and wealth that he could only imagine as a twelve-year-old, riding his orange Sting-Ray bike. But he neglects Ruth’s most important lesson, to keep his heart open, with disastrous results—until he has the opportunity to make a spectacular charitable contribution that will virtually ruin him. Part memoir, part science, part inspiration, and part practical instruction, Into the Magic Shop shows us how we can fundamentally change our lives by first changing our brains and our hearts.

Download or read book The Alphabet of the Human Heart written by Matthew Johnstone and published by Hachette UK. This book was released on 2012-03-01 with total page 119 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A handbook for the happy, and a bible for the broken-hearted, The Alphabet of the Human Heart is an enchanting and enriching journey through the upside and the downside of what it means to be human - our hopes and our fears, our strength and our weakness, our highs and our lows. The Alphabet of the Human Heart is a book of literally two halves. Firstly there is upside A-Z, which is full of the happy and hopeful aspects of our lives, such as A is for Adventure, through G is for Gratitude, S is for Smile to Zen is the Place to Be. The other downside half examines the negative parts of our character lives and how we can overcome them to lead more positive and fulfilling lives. From A is for Anger, through H is for Hate, T is for Temptation to once again end on Zen is the Place to be. Matthew and James have been friends for over 30 years and they've experienced both sides of life - the upside and the downside - and they've turned their experience of life - and of friendship - into a book that combines words and pictures to tell a bigger story. Praise for I Had a Black Dog: 'I Had a Black Dog says with wit, insight, economy and complete understanding what other books take 300 pages to say. Brilliant and indispensable.' - Stephen Fry 'Finally, a book about depression that isn't a prescriptive self-help manual. Johnston's deftly expresses how lonely and isolating depression can be for sufferers. Poignant and humorous in equal measure.' Sunday Times Praise for Living with a Black Dog: 'Moving and thoughtfully written ... a must-have' Daily Mirror 'Comprehensive and very helpful ... brilliant' Guardian Weekend

Book The Heart of the Alphabet

Download or read book The Heart of the Alphabet written by Erica Anderson and published by Strategic Book Publishing & Rights Agency. This book was released on 2014-10-22 with total page 61 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My inspiration for this book arose from a situation when my son, who is diagnosed PDD/NOS, came home from school and wrote me a letter using negative words to describe himself. He was initially hesitant to talk with me about his letter, so I wrote him a letter back using positive words to describe what an amazing person he is. At the time of the incident I was enrolled in classes to complete my teaching degree, and one assignment given was to create an ABC book. While thinking about the letter my son had written, I began to think of other words I could have used to describe him. I realized I could turn this assignment into a gift, a little something to help him get through difficult days. I enlisted my friend and classmate Katie Wendt to help complete and illustrate this book. It was never our intention to publish this book, but after completing it, we had friends and co-workers urging us to do so, believing that it could benefit other children. After this book was completed, my son took the letter that I wrote him and hung it on his wall. He then asked me to find more positive words from the book to add to his letter. I hope that other children can find a bit of themselves in the pages of this book as well.

Book excerpt: (From the forward) We are confronted by demands for social reconstruction. These pose grave problems with far-reaching implications. This books is written with the conviction that their solution must be looked for along lines not yet considered. Its aim is to show what has to be done in order that social demands coming from a larger part of mankind may be turned in the direction of conscious social purpose. Welcome or unwelcome, the facts of social life are present and must be reckoned with. Those who may object to the author's way of discussing proletarian demands should bear this in mind. He wants to present life as it really is. He is aware of the fatal consequences that will result if people refused to look at the facts. These facts have arisen out of the life of modern mankind.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Though there are many books about the history of the alphabet, virtually none address how that history came to be. In Inventing the Alphabet, Johanna Drucker guides readers from antiquity to the present to show how humans have shaped and reshaped their own understanding of this transformative writing tool. From ancient beliefs in the alphabet as a divine gift to growing awareness of its empirical origins through the study of scripts and inscriptions, Drucker describes the frameworks-classical, textual, biblical, graphical, antiquarian, archaeological, paleographic, and political-within which the alphabet's history has been and continues to be constructed. Drucker's book begins in ancient Greece, with the earliest writings on the alphabet's origins. She then explores biblical sources on the topic and medieval preoccupations with the magical properties of individual letters. She later delves into the development of modern archaeological and paleographic tools, and she concludes with the role of alphabetic characters in the digital era. Throughout, she argues that, as a shared form of knowledge technology integrated into every aspect of our lives, the alphabet performs complex cultural, ideological, and technical functions, and her carefully curated selection of images demonstrates how closely the letters we use today still resemble their original appearance millennia ago"--
