Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Heart of Penelope Downing was one of those men who seemed fated to make mistakes, and then to amaze those about them by the fashion in which they face and overcome the consequences. Owing, perhaps, to sheer good luck, after having endured a kind of disgrace only comparable to that which may be felt by a soldier who has been proved a traitor to his cause and country, Downing had so acted that in twenty years - a few moments in a nation's diplomatic life - he had received, not only the formal rehabilitation and recognition implied by his G.C.B., but what, to tell truth, he had valued at the moment far more highly: a touching letter from the venerable statesman who had rejected his boyish appeal for mercy. The old man had asked that he might himself convey to Downing the news of the honour bestowed on him, and he had done so in a letter full of honourable amend, of which one passage ran: 'As I grow older I have become aware of having done many things which I should have left undone; the principal of these, the one I have long most regretted, was my action concerning your case.' Only one human being, and that a woman whose sympathy was none the less valued because she had scarcely understood all it had meant to her friend, was ever shown the letter which had so moved and softened him. But from the day he received it the thought of going home, back to England, never left him, and he would have accomplished his purpose long before, had it not been that the consequence of his second great mistake still pursued him. Book The Poet and Penelope Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Poet and Penelope Classic Reprint written by L. Parry Truscott and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Poet and Penelope "Oh! Oh! Oh!" cried Penelope, in a joyous crescendo, "there's the Poet at the gate!" Almost as she spoke she was hurrying down the garden path; in another minute she was opening the gate for the Poet to pass through. "How good to see you!" she said warmly, for Penelope seldom used half measures. "The last person I should have expected, and the most welcome! The very man I have been wanting to see, because I have something most particular to tell you - think of that! Aren't you glad you have come?" "I am," smiled the Poet, "and I expected to be." He shut the gate in the trim box hedge as he spoke. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. I had fair imagin ings of fomething like Arcady, but it feemeth not at all Arcadian on nearer view, while the poor little town of Bofizon filleth the beholder with neither awe nor admiration. I dare not declare my mind in this refpeei: by reafon_of giving offence to the good people hereabout, who afi'eet to find it a paradife. Book A Cathedral Courtship and Penelope s Eng Lish Experiences

Download or read book A Cathedral Courtship and Penelope s Eng Lish Experiences written by Kate Douglas Wiggin and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Cathedral Courtship and Penelope's Eng Lish Experiences: With Illustrations by Clifford Carleton We are not only in London again, but we are again in Smith's private hotel; one of those deliciously comfort able and ensnaring hostelries in Mayfair which one enters as a solvent human being, and which one leaves as a bankrupt, no matter what may be the number of ciphers on one's letter of credit; since the greater one's apparent supply of wealth, the greater the demand made upon it. I never step long in London without deter mining to give up my art for a private hotel. There must be millions in it, but I fear I lack some of the essential qualifications for success. I never could have the heart, for example, to charge a struggling young genius eight shillings a week for two candles, and then eight shillings the next week for the same two candles, which the struggling young genius, by dint of vigorous economy, had managed to preserve to a decent height. No, I could never do it, not even if I were certain that she would squander the sixteen shillings in Bond Street fripperies instead of laying them up against the rainy day. This book was released on 2015-07-04 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Talitha Cumi a Story of Freedom Through Christian Science Her name was Penelope. The name in itself formed a grievance, and certainly few names could have seemed less applicable to the weazenfaced, hunchbacked little girl upon whom it had been bestowed. Could she have been called by some simple short name, Jane or Mary or Ann - but Penelope! She shrank away sensitively whenever she was addressed by it in the presence of strangers, lest she should catch a smile or a glance of mingled surprise and pity, and know they were saying in their hearts: - "What a name for that poor child!" Then there were other grievances. The prettiness of her sisters, for instance, made Penelope's heart ache. Not that she would have had them less pretty far from it. Download or read book Penelope written by Penelope Scambly Schott and published by University of Central Florida. This book was released on 1999 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Penelope Scambly Schott has researched facts and woven them into this poem. She cites her sources and points out fact from fiction. The poems take the reader directly into the mind and heart of a strong woman, who is extraordinary partly because she thinks she is ordinary. This brilliant tour-de-force narrates the life of a woman shipwrecked in the 1640s on the shores of modern-day New Jersey, axed in the belly, half-scalped and left for dead by the Lenape Indians, then nursed back to health by them and taken into the tribe. And that’s only the beginning. Penelope Scambly Schott has carefully researched the facts and woven them into a poetic page-turner. She cites her sources, provides a glossary and, best of all, indicates what is fact and what is fiction. Her technique is well chosen: the interior monologues, mostly of the heroine, Penelope Kent van Princis Stout, and, in a few poems, those of her namesake, the author. A more distant Penelope, the wife of Odysseus, is also invoked. The poems take us directly into the mind and heart of a strong woman, who is extraordinary partly because she thinks she is ordinary. With craftsmanship and feeling, Schott has limned unforgettable characters whose lives transcend the mostly ignoble history of settler-Native American relations.
