Book A Wiggly Way Through England

Download or read book A Wiggly Way Through England written by Richard Guise and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2013 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Richard Guise follows a unique 450-mile route across England on foot and on his trusty bike Tetley. His guide is the wiggly line that divides rivers flowing west from those flowing east, a choice that takes him over rolling downlands, along windy ridges, through remote villages, across ancient battlefields, past abandoned airfields and even -- surprisingly -- by boat through a network of canal tunnels that echo to the sound of cannon fire. Accompanying or accommodating him on parts of this serendipitous journey are an array of locals with their own stories to tell: the quail-raising smallholder, the bumptious yachtsman, cake fans, ferret fanciers, re-writers of history and more. The route itself turns out to have historical significance and Guise roots out odd tales of passion and heroism, vision and fear, drunkenness, conceit, deceit and murder.

Book Heart of the Cotswolds England

Download or read book Heart of the Cotswolds England written by M. L. Buchman and published by Buchman Bookworks, Inc.. This book was released on 2017-06-14 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: -a Love Abroad B&B romance- Welcome to the Cotswolds of England. Old stone villages, scenic rolling hills dotted with sheep, and quiet pubs serving local beers abound. Come stay in The Queen’s Guard pub and B&B, put your feet up by the fire, and settle in. Former Delta Force Sergeant Aaron Mason did just that. He’d received his military retirement along with a shot-up knee and a cane. He finds a certain contentment when he takes up a job from his youth, apprenticing himself to a stonemason. That marginal contentment gets blown to hell when Jane Tully storms into his favorite pub, desperate for help—anyone’s help. She must find a way to survive her sister’s wedding. Except she’s never needed help before and doesn’t know how to ask. Nothing in their past prepared either of them for their present. And their future? It lies beyond imagining. But they aren’t alone. Help arrives from the most unexpected sources, as it always does in the Heart of the Cotswolds.

Download or read book The Pilgrims Way written by Leigh Hatts and published by Cicerone Press Limited. This book was released on 2022-02-14 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This guidebook details the Pilgrims' Way, an historic pilgrimage route to Canterbury Cathedral in Kent, home of the shrine of the martyred archbishop, St Thomas Becket. The route is described both from Winchester in Hampshire (138 miles) and London's Southwark Cathedral (90¼ miles), with an optional spur to Rochester Cathedral. With relatively easy walking on ancient byways, the route from Winchester is presented in 15 stages of 5-14 miles: it can be comfortably completed in under a fortnight. It follows a major chalk ridge through scenic countryside, taking in characterful towns and villages and historic churches. The route from Southwark is described in 10 stages and includes a visit to the ruined Lesnes Abbey. Detailed route description is accompanied by 1:50,000 OS mapping, advice on making the most of a trip and information on the historical background to the pilgrimage, key historical figures and local points of interest. Accommodation listings and details of facilities and transport links can be found in the appendices. Pilgrimages to Becket's shrine began within a few years of the his death in 1170, although Canterbury was a popular destination even before this time due to the nearby shrine of St Augustine. The route has featured in literature, drama and film, and forms the setting for Geoffrey Chaucer's famous Middle English work, The Canterbury Tales.

Book Lost Battlefields of Britain

Download or read book Lost Battlefields of Britain written by Martin Hackett and published by The History Press. This book was released on 2005-10-20 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The British Isles have witnessed hundreds of battles, both great and small, in their two thousand years of recorded history, but not all are widely remembered today. Many of these battles are well known, due to their far-reaching consequences, their sheer scale or the involvement of famous protagonists. Even so, many battles have never been properly investigated, perhaps because their importance was never understood or because they have never been included in previous books on British battlefields. In this book, Martin Hackett examines ten forgotten British battles, covering the length and breadth of Britain and some 900 years of warfare. For each, he provides a concise account of the battle itself and analyses its military, archaeological and political significance. Each entry is accompanied by current photographs of the location, a modern map of the battlefield with suggested tours and information on exploring the site today.

Book Follow the Spring North Land s End to John O groats

Download or read book Follow the Spring North Land s End to John O groats written by Christine Roche and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2004-12-09 with total page 173 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is written from the pages of the diary kept by the author on her walk, the diary being written every night or perhaps the next day while all the experiences were fresh in her mind. You can read it and "live the walk" as you do so. Following the spring north meant enjoying the sight of each new spring flower and sight or sound of birds as the journey continued northward through ever changing landscape. Although a stress fracture to the neck of the femur delayed the completion of the walk until the following spring, this did not seem to break the continuous nature of the journey; "It's still there - Keep smiling!" kept her looking forward to the next stage of the walk. She met some delightful people on the walk, enjoyed the company of some good friends for parts of it and enjoyed the "bliss of solitude" for much of it, appreciating being alone in wild places but not lonely. Having walked and enjoyed the scenery from the south of Cornwall to the north of Scotland, she was sorry to finish.
