Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Heart of Arabia, Vol. 2 of 2: A Record of Travel and ExplorationMy first step was to tackle Ibn Sa'ud himself; at the conclusion of an evening interview I asked him bluntly whether he remembered the compact, to which he had agreed, and reminded him that the summer would soon be upon us. I remember, he replied, I have not for gotten, but I have been thinking that at this season you will experience much discomfort. Would it not be better that you should defer the project till after the summer when I will send you whithersoever you may desire 2 Besides with this affair of the blockade trouble at Kuwait I am anxious to have you with me to consult; but, of course, if you wish to go there is nothing to prevent it, and the camels are all ready to come in. Well, I said, it was arranged that I should go, and I thought no more of the matter believing that you had matters in train and would inlorm me when the preparations were complete. As regards the Kuwait affair you know it is fully settled and no further trouble will occur. I have given you my word for that but, 0 Hakim, it seems to me that perhaps you really do not wish me to undertake this journey. If that be so, tell me and I shall understand, though I am anxious to go in accordance with our agreement. Thus appealed to on a point of honour Ibn Sa'ud yielded with a fair grace and with an unconvincing assurance that it was only a con sideration of my own comfort that had deterred him from further proceeding in the matter. The camels would be sent for at once.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Heart of the Antarctic Volume 2

Download or read book The Heart of the Antarctic Volume 2 written by E. H. Shackleton and published by DigiCat. This book was released on 2022-11-22 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a historical account that details Shackleton's expedition, written on the passage by ocean liner from New Zealand to Britain. The expedition was led by Ernest H. Shackleton, who set sail from Port Lyttelton, New Zealand, on January 1, 1908. Shackleton and a party of 14 men were dropped off at Cape Royds on Ross Island on February 3. The men were split into three groups. One would attempt to reach the South Pole, another would travel north to the South Magnetic Pole, and a third would explore the mountains west of McMurdo Sound. On October 29, Shackleton, three companions, and four ponies set out for the South Pole. Despite the great difficulty, they reached a latitude of 88°23' S. on January 9, 1909, further south than any prior expedition. They were compelled to turn back due to fierce blizzards and a shortage of supplies. They returned to the Nimrod and arrived in New Zealand safely. In addition to getting within 97.5 nautical miles (180.6 kilometers) of the pole, the expedition accomplished two other noteworthy feats. Douglas Mawson, Edgeworth David, and Alistair Mackay led the first ascent of Mount Erebus, Antarctica's most active volcano, on March 5-11, 1908, and the same three men reached the South Magnetic Pole on January 16, 1909.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Be Afra. Be a frater. Be a brother. Be our brother's keeper. 'Love the Brotherhood' was the message of Beloved Afra, for which he was crucified 500,000 years ago on a continent named after him - AFRICA. There are more things in heaven and earth than are dreamt of in our philosophy, science and religion. Life is not a happenstance. The Berlin Act 1885, the Biafran War 1967-1970, June 12, 1993, Sep 11, 2001; the election of Barack Obama as the 44th President of the USA or any other event in life is not a happenstance. This is demonstrated in Be Afra Volumes 1 & 2, using numerological analysis and cosmic clock charting. The Cosmic Law operates throughout the universe, seen and unseen. Be Afra discusses the origin of man, the root races with particular emphasis on the fourth root race, the progenitor of the black race; the law of karma, reincarnation, free will and other aspects of the cosmic law. Each root race has a divine purpose and from the beginning was endowed with divine love, wisdom and power to fulfill that purpose. Each had the knowledge of the cosmic law. Be Afra draws on sacred writings, If, Yrb legends and deep analysis of Yrb language to demonstrate that the black race had knowledge of the Everlasting Gospel, the Teaching that should keep mankind free from ignorance or defiance of the Law. Ignorance of that Law is no excuse. We are who we are and where we are, by series of decisions we took, at the Y-junctions of life. Beloved Great Divine Director, Manu of the seventh (the incoming) root race said: "Perhaps we have been a bit timid ourselves, or should I say conservative and dignified, in not employing more spectacular methods to acquaint mankind with the wonderful product which we have to offer. After all, blessed ones, we are marketing divine freedom to the earth and conveying it to individuals every day, yet we are seldom seen or heard in the marketplace of life. Perhaps the 'shouting from the housetops' through the multitudes of antennas reaching out into the ethers shall one day convey a greater measure of heaven's law to the earth. We shall see." (Pearls of Wisdom Vol. 8 S/No. 21 dated May 23, 1965)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Heart of Arabia, Vol. 1 of 2: A Record of Travel Exploration Of the pleasant year I spent sojourning and wandering amid the deserts and oases of Arabia I have endeavoured to compile a record, at once fully descriptive of my own experiences and designed to serve my successors as a faithful guide in their wanderings, when in their turn they take up the torch which has been held in the past by so many distinguished hands - Niebuhr and Burckhardt, Sadlier and Burton, Doughty and the Blunts, Wallin and Wellsted, Huber and Halevy, Euting and Guarmani, and, in modern times, Shakespear and Gertrude Bell, to name but a few of those whose names are writ large on the scroll of Arabian explorers. It was with little fitness to undertake geographical or scientific work of any kind that I entered Arabia, but chance led me far afield from the tracks of those who had been in that country before me; and natural curiosity, fortified by a sense of duty, impelled me to record day by day and almost hour by hour everything I saw or heard in the course of my wanderings in the hope that some day, the grain being separated from the chaff, there might remain a residue of useful matter worthy of presentation to the world. The few scientific instruments I carried with me, with a limited knowledge of their proper uses, have enabled the experts of the Royal Geographical Society to use the detailed itineraries of my journeys in the preparation of reasonable maps of a country hitherto in great part conventionally charted on the basis of second-hand information. Book excerpt: This biography is the first in English for nearly 30 years. It re-examines the life of a curiously neglected but important figure in twentieth-century history, Ibn Saud, the founder of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The author uses his knowledge of Arabic and of the Arabian Peninsula to fill the many gaps in existing accounts. This is a clear account with much new detail on the many dramatic episodes in the life of Ibn Saud, from the flight of his family from Riyadh into exile in Kuwait just 100 years ago through his daring recapture of Riyadh in 1902, the expulsion of the Turks, the capture of the Holy Cities of Islam, the discovery of oil and the creation of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

Download or read book Of Sand or Soil written by Nadav Samin and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2019-01-08 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why do tribal genealogies matter in modern-day Saudi Arabia? What compels the strivers and climbers of the new Saudi Arabia to want to prove their authentic descent from one or another prestigious Arabian tribe? Of Sand or Soil looks at how genealogy and tribal belonging have informed the lives of past and present inhabitants of Saudi Arabia and how the Saudi government's tacit glorification of tribal origins has shaped the powerful development of the kingdom’s genealogical culture. Nadav Samin presents the first extended biographical exploration of the major twentieth-century Saudi scholar Ḥamad al-Jāsir, whose genealogical studies frame the story about belonging and identity in the modern kingdom. Samin examines the interplay between al-Jāsir’s genealogical project and his many hundreds of petitioners, mostly Saudis of nontribal or lower status origin who sought validation of their tribal roots in his genealogical texts. Investigating the Saudi relationship to this opaque, orally inscribed historical tradition, Samin considers the consequences of modern Saudi genealogical politics and how the most intimate anxieties of nontribal Saudis today are amplified by the governing strategies and kinship ideology of the Saudi state. Challenging the impression that Saudi culture is determined by puritanical religiosity or rentier economic principles, Of Sand or Soil shows how the exploration and establishment of tribal genealogies have become influential phenomena in contemporary Saudi society. Beyond Saudi Arabia, this book casts important new light on the interplay between kinship ideas, oral narrative, and state formation in rapidly changing societies.
