Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reminiscences About Abraham Lincoln In the dawn of the 20th century, looking backward through the vista of time, I recall my first knowledge of Lincoln. Early in the forties, my father, then a resident of the state of Indiana, had correspondence with him pertaining to business of the anti - slavery cause, in which my father was a zealous worker; and previous to this Lincoln had declare-d his opposition to slavery and its extension, basing his opinion on facts experienced in the South where he had been reared. Thus I came to know something of his individual character and sterling qualities of mind and heart prior to meeting him. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Out of the Heart of Kentucky: A Rhymed Story of the Life of Abraham Lincoln The Great Ruler of the Universe places greatness at times in strange surroundings, but no one would ever have thought to look for it in the wilderness of the Heart of Kentucky nearly six score and eight years ago. If the sun broke through the clouds on the twelfth day of February 1809 it lighted and brightened a little log cabin on a meandering creek in Hardin County (now Larue), Kentucky in which Abraham Lincoln was ushered into this world. I doubt if the birth of anyone now living and born in the United States was attended with tragedy and sorrow greater than his. Poverty and obscurity were his companions in the long struggle upward to fame. Out of the valley of oblivion he rose, however, like a great majestic mountain, tipped with white, to the achievement of human success and service to his fellow men. Only once in five hundred years does his kind pass along the highroad of history. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Personal Reminiscences of Abraham Lincoln These personal reminiscences, written in a fragmentary way by my husband during the last few months of his life, when he was confined to the house the greater part of the time, I have gathered together, feeling that the friends who knew something of his great admiration for Abraham Lincoln would be interested. Much of it came to him from close personal observation, and at a time when it was indelibly impressed on his mind and heart. It is this that would seem to make it worth while to those who knew him best. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Abraham Lincoln Returns Each morning at a set hour a lady, now past eighty, sits in a corner of her room as she has done for many years, and 'faces a vast unseen audience. This is no radio or television audience, but a congregation of souls in desperate need of help. Harriet M. Shelton has described this gathering to me with a heart full of compassion. They are, she tells me, those who have left this life and reside in a place of shadows be cause oi transgressions. Some, she says, did not believe in God and the life to come when they were on the earth plane, so they do not realize they have passed over and are free from earthly ties and limitations. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Abraham Lincoln and the Downfall of American Slavery HE character of Abraham Lincoln, as the years pass, becomes grander and more heroic; and, as is usual when a commanding figure slowly rises conspicuous in the history of humanity, traditions and myths are already beginning to cluster around his illustrious personality. The simplest truth is always best; and the simpler and more direct the biographical sketch of Abraham Lincoln, the more deeply will his image be impressed upon the heart of that common people Whom he loved so well and of which he was the noblest representative. In this book it has been the author's aim to present such a picture of Lincoln and his times as shall leave upon the mind of the reader a definite and authoritative likeness of the man whose name is now enrolled highest among the types of our national ideals.relati was 3. Book Abraham Lincoln

Download or read book Abraham Lincoln written by Elbert R. Moses and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-02-17 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Abraham Lincoln: From Cabin to Capitol Lincoln, like Shakespeare, has been written about so much that the essential facts of the man's life are buried under a mass of words. Most people are too busy to read through a series of volumes in which the man is merely a point about which are grouped the social, political, and military events of the time in which he lived. General readers want to get at the heart of the matter in the shortest possible time. For this reason, I take pleasure in calling attention to the narrative which follows. It gives a maximum of information in a minimum of space. Here a reader will find the unadulterated Lincoln as he rises slowly, steadily, and irresistibly from obscurity to fame. The story as here given has a stark simplicity and plainness very like that of the man whose story it is. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Portrait Life of Lincoln: Life of Abraham Lincoln, the Greatest American There is not one who reads these lines who was born in humbler circumstances than Abraham Lincoln; not one whose opportunities in life are so limited as those which surrounded him; and yet he became one of the greatest of men. His life proves to all generations the power of an indomitable will and a resolute purpose; that man, when he conquers him self, can conquer the world. Do you remember that old homestead where you were born? It was a mansion compared with that rough log cabin in the Kentucky wilderness where Abraham Lincoln began life on that cold winter day on the twelfth of February, in 1809. Do you remember the dear old village where you spent your child hood days; its long country roads, shaded with towering maples and elms, along which you romped and shouted and played on your way to school those good old days in the country? It was a, great world of light and laughter, of pleasure and friendship, of wonderful Opportunities, compared with that forest home of Abraham Lincoln where only the growl of the bear echoed along the trail, where the ring Of the ax was the only sound of civilization, and desolation and poverty were his only friends - and they were staunch friends. Every American is rich today in comparison with the worldly posses sions of Abraham Lincoln during his childhood, his youth, and his early manhood - rich in surroundings of home; rich in the comforts of life; rich in the opportunities for learning and education. There is not an American youth who is not a millionaire In the possibilities of vast success in life, compared to the possibilities that were within the grasp of Abraham Lincoln on the day that he left his father's roof to go out into the great world, of which he knew only the knowledge that comes from the school of the woods and the motherhood of Nature. There was one thing that he did not know and never learned - and that was Fear. He learned early that man is his own master; that with a strong arm, a strong heart, and a strong will, there is no power on earth that he need fear; that with his conscience clear and his mind clean the future will take care of itself and even Death is conquered. This book was released on 2017-05-21 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Abraham Lincoln, Servant of the People You will recall that during the dark days of the Civil War Lincoln's attention was called to certain records. These records seemed to indicate that one Mrs. Lydia Bixby of Boston was the mother of five boys who had enlisted in the serv ice of their country and all of whom had been killed in battle. This information so stirred the tender heart of Lincoln that he wrote to Mrs. Bixby one of the most sympathetic letters ever written. 80 beautiful was this letter that it has become known thruout the world as a gem of literature. It was to this letter which Dr. Barton referred when he said Lincoln had blundered, for by his investigation he disclosed that only four of Mrs. Bixby's sons had served their coun try; that two of these had died in battle and that one of the other two sons had deserted to the enemy. He proved conclusively that two sons, one of whom had not been in the service, lived in Massachusetts for many years after the close of the war.
