Download or read book The Health of the Francophone Population Aged 65 and Over in Ontario written by Louise Bouchard and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report presents a portrait of the health of francophone seniors (65 years and over) in Ontario, as compared with the rest of the provincial population. The report is based on data from the Canadian Community Health Survey (CCHS), a cross-sectional multi-stage survey that collects information related to health status, health care utilization and health determinants for the Canadian population. Eight CCHS cycles, undertaken between 2001 and 2009, and covering responses from 130,000 respondents were used to complete this report. A combination of consecutive cycles was used to increase the effective sample size and to describe more thoroughly the health of the aging francophone population in the three main regions of Ontario: Central/South-West, East/South-East, and North.

Book excerpt: Without question, Canada’s population, as in most developed countries, is aging. By 2015, Canada will have more people aged 65 and older than people aged 15 and younger. By 2050, the proportion of the elderly will be one in four. What is questionable is the evidence base that suggests this demographic shift will overwhelm Canadian medicare, ultimately threatening its financial sustainability. This argument— long debunked in health services and policy research circles—continues to surface in popular press and public discourse. This focus on medicare’s sustainability threatens meaningful and productive discussions related to delivering high-quality healthcare to seniors. There is no shortage of pressing issues that demand the attention of health system managers and planners in this area. To help raise and address these issues, the Canadian Health Services Research Foundation (CHSRF) hosted the Better with Age series of roundtables -- six regional and one national -- that brought together more than 200 policy-makers, regional healthcare executives, researchers and citizen representatives from across Canada in October and November 2010.

Book Older Women s Health

Download or read book Older Women s Health written by and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Women comprise the majority of the older population and have different patterns of illness and health needs than men. In 2005, 13 percent of the Canadian population was aged 65 or older, and this number is projected to increase to more than 25 percent by 2056. Older adults have a high burden of chronic disease and multiple chronic conditions requiring a patient-centred (rather than a disease-specific) approach to their care. Both social and biological factors result in important differences in the health and the health care needs of older women and men. Older women are more likely to have a greater burden of illness including multiple chronic conditions, more functional limitations, and a higher prevalence of disability then older men. Therefore, the mismatch between the way health and supportive-care services are organized and the needs of older adults disproportionately impacts women.
