Book excerpt: This journey to the beginnings of the physician's art brings to life the civilizations of the ancient world--Egypt of the Pharaohs, Greece at the time of Hippocrates, Rome under the Caesars, the India of Ashoka, and China as Mencius knew it. Probing the documents and artifacts of the ancient world with a scientist's mind and a detective's eye, Guido Majno pieces together the difficulties people faced in the effort to survive their injuries, as well as the odd, chilling, or inspiring ways in which they rose to the challenge. In asking whether the early healers might have benefited their patients, or only hastened their trip to the grave, Dr. Majno uncovered surprising answers by testing ancient prescriptions in a modern laboratory. Illustrated with hundreds of photographs, many in full color, and climaxing ten years of work, The Healing Hand is a spectacular recreation of man's attempts to conquer pain and disease.

Book Fingerprints of the Gods

Download or read book Fingerprints of the Gods written by Graham Hancock and published by Crown. This book was released on 2012-09-19 with total page 779 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Could the story of mankind be far older than we have previously believed? Using tools as varied as archaeo-astronomy, geology, and computer analysis of ancient myths, Graham Hancock presents a compelling case to suggest that it is. Graham Hancock is featured in Ancient Apocalypse, a Netflix original docuseries. “A fancy piece of historical sleuthing . . . intriguing and entertaining and sturdy enough to give a long pause for thought.”—Kirkus Reviews In Fingerprints of the Gods, Hancock embarks on a worldwide quest to put together all the pieces of the vast and fascinating jigsaw of mankind’s hidden past. In ancient monuments as far apart as Egypt’s Great Sphinx, the strange Andean ruins of Tihuanaco, and Mexico’s awe-inspiring Temples of the Sun and Moon, he reveals not only the clear fingerprints of an as-yet-unidentified civilization of remote antiquity, but also startling evidence of its vast sophistication, technological advancement, and evolved scientific knowledge. A record-breaking number one bestseller in Britain, Fingerprints of the Gods contains the makings of an intellectual revolution, a dramatic and irreversible change in the way that we understand our past—and so our future. And Fingerprints of God tells us something more. As we recover the truth about prehistory, and discover the real meaning of ancient myths and monuments, it becomes apparent that a warning has been handed down to us, a warning of terrible cataclysm that afflicts the Earth in great cycles at irregular intervals of time—a cataclysm that may be about to recur. “Readers will hugely enjoy their quest in these pages of inspired storytelling.”—The Times (UK)

Book Soul and Body Diseases Remedies and Healing in Middle Eastern Religious Cultures and Traditions

Download or read book Soul and Body Diseases Remedies and Healing in Middle Eastern Religious Cultures and Traditions written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2023-07-31 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aiming to develop a less studied literary genre, this book provides a well-rounded picture of spiritual and physical diseases and their remedies as they were ingrained in the imagination and practices of Middle Eastern Abrahamic cultures, with a special emphasis of Christian communities (Greeks/Byzantines, Syrians, Armenians, Georgians, Ethiopians). The volume traces traditions dealing with the onset of a disease in the body and soul, the search for remedy, the maintenance of healing, and the engagement of these processes with faith—either through their affirmation in the public sphere or remaining within the personal framework, as in monastic traditions. A recurring presence in religious literature and the history of the intellectual world, the confrontation between disease and healing may well still be current for our modern understanding of the paths to seeking and maintaining the health of one’s body and soul, without excluding the factor of faith as a core principle.

Book Psychic Healing

Download or read book Psychic Healing written by John Weldon and published by ATRI Publishing. This book was released on 2013-02-13 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: You might expect this book to ridicule the whole idea of psychic healing—surgery without anesthesia instantly closed wounds and other bizarre phenomena relating to this occult science. Rather than labeling psychic healing quackery or trickery or cheap magic the authors verify the fact that psychic healing is very real and the ramifications are horrifying. Normal people cannot heal psychically. Only occultists can. In “genuine” psychic healing demonic energy is employed. Eyewitness accounts of weird operations dematerializing flesh and other mind-boggling evidences abound in this text. More than just one of the strangest and most disturbing books you may ever read this is a carefully researched heavily documented exposé of an alarming otherworld practice.

Book The Healing Gods

    Book Details:
  • Author : Candy Gunther Brown
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2013-07-30
  • ISBN : 0199985804
  • Pages : 320 pages

Download or read book The Healing Gods written by Candy Gunther Brown and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2013-07-30 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The question typically asked about complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) is whether it works. However, an issue of equal or greater significance is why it is supposed to work. The Healing Gods: Complementary and Alternative Medicine in Christian America explains how and why CAM entered the American biomedical mainstream and won cultural acceptance, even among evangelical and other theologically conservative Christians, despite its ties to non-Christian religions and the lack of scientific evidence of its efficacy and safety. Before the 1960s, most of the practices Candy Gunther Brown considers-yoga, chiropractic, acupuncture, Reiki, Therapeutic Touch, meditation, martial arts, homeopathy, anticancer diets-were dismissed as medically and religiously questionable. These once-suspect health practices gained approval as they were re-categorized as non-religious (though generically spiritual) health-care, fitness, or scientific techniques. Although CAM claims are similar to religious claims, CAM gained cultural legitimacy because people interpret it as science instead of religion. Holistic health care raises ethical and legal questions of informed consent, consumer protection, and religious establishment at the center of biomedical ethics, tort law, and constitutional law. The Healing Gods confronts these issues, getting to the heart of values such as personal autonomy, self-determination, religious equality, and religious voluntarism.
