This book was released on 2015-07-10 with total page 510 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Headship of Christ and the Rights of the Christian People To enter into the spirit of this book, we must distinctly apprehend the conception formed by its author, of the Presbyterian Church of Scotland. Throughout her entire history, the Scottish Church has been distinguished by two leading characteristics, seldom found in combination. 1st, She has assumed a high and commanding ecclesiastical position, claiming a jurisdiction in spiritual concerns independent of, and co-ordinate with, the jurisdiction of the civil magistrate. She has declared Christ the Head of the Church, not in any abstract and inconsequential sense, but to the clear practical effect of having given his Church upon earth a code of law, - the Scriptures of the Old and New Testament, - and of empowering and requiring her to regulate her affairs by that code alone. 2dlg, She h;is been eminently a Church of the people. What she claimed, she claimed not as a hierarchy, not as a clerical corporation, but as a congregation of Christians. The minister had his place: the member had his place. The powers and rights of each were held equally from Christ the King. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Pastor Paul Theological Explorations for the Church Catholic

Download or read book Pastor Paul Theological Explorations for the Church Catholic written by Scot McKnight and published by Brazos Press. This book was released on 2019-09-03 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Being a pastor is a complicated calling. Pastors are often pulled in multiple directions and must "become all things to all people" (1 Cor. 9:22). What does the New Testament say (or not say) about the pastoral calling? And what can we learn about it from the apostle Paul? According to popular New Testament scholar Scot McKnight, pastoring must begin first and foremost with spiritual formation, which plays a vital role in the life and ministry of the pastor. As leaders, pastors both create and nurture culture in a church. The biblical vision for that culture is Christoformity, or Christlikeness. Grounding pastoral ministry in the pastoral praxis of the apostle Paul, McKnight shows that nurturing Christoformity was at the heart of the Pauline mission. The pastor's central calling, then, is to mediate Christ in everything. McKnight explores seven dimensions that illustrate this concept--friendship, siblings, generosity, storytelling, witness, subverting the world, and wisdom--as he calls pastors to be conformed to Christ and to nurture a culture of Christoformity in their churches.

Book The Doctrine of the Person of Jesus Christ Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Doctrine of the Person of Jesus Christ Classic Reprint written by H. R. Mackintosh and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-12 with total page 576 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Doctrine of the Person of Jesus Christ That there is a main stream, that the authors of the New Testament are eventually one in their view of Christ, with a unity which is powerful enough to absorb and subdue their differences Of interpretation, is not indeed to be lightheartedly assumed. But it is rendered ex tremely probable by the simple experimental fact that the Church has always found it possible to nourish her faith in the Redeemer from every part of the apostolic writings. Further, this natural presumption is vindicated by a closer scrutiny of the facts. Two certainties are shared in common by all New Testament writers: First, that the life and consciousness of Jesus was in form com pletely human; second, that this historic life, apprehended as instinct with the powers of redemption, is one with the life of God Himself. In Christ they find God personally present for our salvation from sin and death. Yet in spite or rather because of this basal agreement it is the more impressive to contemplate the sovereign freedom with which they surveyed Christ, telling what they saw in books which have been quite justly described as literature, not dogma. Each looked at Jesus with his own eyes; each Spoke out of his own mind; and to force their words about Him into a mechanical and external harmony is simply to misconceive the genius of Christian faith. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1976, Paul Johnson’s exceptional study of Christianity has been loved and widely hailed for its intensive research, writing, and magnitude—“a tour de force, one of the most ambitious surveys of the history of Christianity ever attempted and perhaps the most radical” (New York Review of Books). In a highly readable companion to books on faith and history, the scholar and author Johnson has illuminated the Christian world and its fascinating history in a way that no other has. Johnson takes off in the year AD 49 with his namesake the apostle Paul. Thus beginning an ambitious quest to paint the centuries since the founding of a little-known ‘Jesus Sect’, A History of Christianity explores to a great degree the evolution of the Western world. With an unbiased and overall optimistic tone, Johnson traces the fantastic scope of the consequent sects of Christianity and the people who followed them. Information drawn from extensive and varied sources from around the world makes this history as credible as it is reliable. Invaluable understanding of the framework of modern Christianity—and its trials and tribulations throughout history—has never before been contained in such a captivating work.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Jesus Christ and the People The word compassion means a great deal - co-passion, feeling together With them - SO one with the people that He shared their burdens, and felt their fears, and sorrowed in their griefs. But the Greek word means still more than that. It was a yearning pity that drew up into itself all the strength of His life a longing that filled not only all the heart, as we say, but all that was in Him. It was a pity that he came a pain. So did Jesus Christ yearn over the people, for that they were as Sheep not having a Shepherd. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Kingdom of Christ: Delineated in Two Essays on Our Lord's Own Account of His Person and of the Nature of His Kingdom, and on the Constitution, Powers, and Ministry of a Christian Church as Appointed by Himself It cannot be alleged that they are not worth noticing: since, whether intrinsically weak or strong, the reception they have met with from the Public indicates their having had some influence. And again, if any one is averse to en tering into controversy, and especially per sonal controversy (a feeling with which I cordially sympathize, ) this would not corn pel him to leave wholly unnoticed all the arguments that can be urged against his views.' It would be absurd to speak as if there were no medium between, on the one hand, engaging in a controversy, and on the other hand, passing over without any notice at all, every thing that ever has been, or may be, urged on the opposite side. Nothing is easier, or more common, and I should add, nothing more advisable, than to notice in general terms the opis nions or arguments opposed to one's own, and without reference to any particular book or author: as by saying, for instance.
