This book was released on 2015-07-17 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The One Hundredth Anniversary of the Haystack Prayer Meeting: Celebrated at the Ninety-Seventh Annual Meeting of the American Board in North Adams If John R. Mott is right in defining a leader as one who knows the way, can keep ahead, and can get others to follow him, then the Providence of God has given conspicuous place among church leaders to this modest, self-effacing, inconspicuous youth who never thought of himself as a pioneer. He was intent upon persuading Christians to do their whole duty, that was all. He would have been in hearty accord with the thought uttered one hundred years after the thunderstorm meeting in a missionary assembly at Silver Bay, When Christianity possesses Chris tians, it will possess the world. Book The Prayer Meeting and Its Improvement Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Prayer Meeting and Its Improvement Classic Reprint written by Lewis O. Thompson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-24 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Prayer-Meeting and Its Improvement It is impossible to over-estimate the value of the prayer meeting, as it stands related to the life and usefulness of the Church of Christ. In fact, no other service can be compared with this in importance - not even the Sabbath preaching, nor the instruction in the Sunday-school - for without a live prayer-meet ing the church will be spiritually cold, the Sabbath services will be formal, and the Children will be fed with husks instead of pro visions from the Master's table. The weekly prayer-meeting is the pulse of the church, -one of the most encouraging signs Of the times, in the religious world, is the increased interest manifested by pastors and churches in this topic, and the new life and power which now are found in many of these hallowed circles of united prayer and pra1se. Some Of us can remember the prayer-meetings of our childhood, when the num ber present ranged from ten to twenty or thirty, and most of these were the female members - when the leader occupied most of the hour in cold, doctrinal remarks, and then remarked: Brethren, the meeting is Open, after which came the solemn pauses, only broken by this and that good deacon taking pity on the meeting, and making a few forced and uninteresting remarks. Oh! How cold those meetings were cold enough to freeze up any longings to be a Christian, in the breast of a sinner who might have chanced to happen in. How we children used to dread being com pelled to attend, preferring even to go to bed earlier than usual, rather than to sit for an hour in that spiritual refrigerator. Such prayer-meetings are, we trust, seldom found now, for with the increased interest in the Sabbath-school, the weekly meeting has been steadily growing in importance, in the estimation Of Chris tians of all denominations. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Year's Prayer-Meeting Talks For several years I have been in receipt Of letters from ministers indifferent parts of the country, of wide variety of denomination, suggesting that I put out a volume such as the one here presented. I have always had the pleasure and blessing Of a large and interesting prayer-meeting. For many years in downtown city churches the prayer-meet ing has always numbered hundreds Of attendants. I think one Of the chief reasons for this is that I have made much of the prayer-meeting in my an nouncements on Sunday, have never allowed any thing to keep me away from it, and have made as careful preparation for it in the prayer-meeting talk, in the selection and arrangement of music, and indeed in all particulars, as for the services on Sunday. These prayer-meeting talks were de livered in the First Methodist Episcopal church, Cleveland, Of which I am pastor, during the past year. They were dictated to my stenographer, usually on prayer-meeting morning, and always. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The New York City Noon Prayer Meeting

Download or read book The New York City Noon Prayer Meeting written by Talbot Wilson Chambers and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 135 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1858, this classic volume recounts the remarkable history of New York City's Fulton Street Noon Prayer Meeting that sparked a revival throughout America and abroad. Full of remarkable stories of God's power to draw people to Himself, this first-hand account of the Noon Prayer Meeting not only tells what God has done in the past, but will raise your faith to new levels for what God will do in the future. This glimpse into history will give you new fervor to believe that God's power to bring His Kingdom to Earth will once again rain down on New York City and America in days to come. "It is amazing to consider that the location of the first of these meetings was in the exact vicinity where the World Trade Center recently stood-between West Street and Greenwich crossing at Fulton. The cry of 2 Chronicles 7:14 rings truer than ever: "If my people who are called by My name, will humble themselves and pray, seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, I will hear from heaven and heal their land." As you read this book allow God's Spirit to speak to your heart for our nation. Could it be that God intends to use the horrific attack of September 11, 2001 to bring revival from the rubble-from the same place He did in 1857?" Taken from Introduction by Tom Mahairas Founder, Manhattan Bible Church President, CitiVision, Inc.
