Men may seem to be absorbed in the active business of life, taking pleasure in all the varying interests of their several callings, but still deep down beneath the surface of this ceaseless energy you can discern the longing for rest. Out of the stir and tumult of the busy city they look forward to a future of peace, they console themselves for their daily penance of feverish activity, by thoughts of a calm retreat when the business of this life is over, some quiet country home where in sweet content they can reap at leisure, the fruits of their long and wearisome labours. And this yearning for rest is not peculiar to men of business; we all of us havean instinctive longing for it. The cares, anxieties, the changes and chances of this mortal life, soon weary us; we fly, like the dove from the ark, to and fro over the face of the waters, to find no rest for the sole of our foot; nothing earthly can minister to this longing, no fountain of worldly origin can quench this unappeasable thirst. Human love can sustain and support us for a time, but even that, in its highest form, fails us at the last. The joys and pleasures of this transitory life soon lose their power and display their worthlessness in the time of need. And so when old age comes to us we meet him with words of gladness, for he is the forerunner of our eternal peace, he bears to us the welcome tidings, that we shall soon enter into rest. Yes, heaven is the place of rest, the quiet land-locked harbour where we can drop anchor, and refit, after life's tempestuous storms.
