Book excerpt: In Haunting Biology Emma Kowal recounts the troubled history of Western biological studies of Indigenous Australians and asks how we now might see contemporary genomics, especially that conducted by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander scientists. Kowal illustrates how the material persistence of samples over decades and centuries folds together the fates of different scientific methodologies. Blood, bones, hair, comparative anatomy, human biology, physiology, and anthropological genetics all haunt each other across time and space, together with the many racial theories they produced and sustained. The stories Kowal tells feature a variety of ghostly presences: a dead anatomist, a fetishized piece of hair hidden away in a war trunk, and an elusive white Indigenous person. By linking this history to contemporary genomics and twenty-first-century Indigeneity, Kowal outlines the fraught complexities, perils, and potentials of studying Indigenous biological difference in the twenty-first century.

Maier writes that the historians’ controversy gave Germany a chance to air the issues immediately before unification and, in effect, the controversy substituted for the constitutional debate that a united Germany never got around to holding. The premises of national community, whether formulated in terms of legal culture, inherited collective responsibilities, or patriotic habits of the heart, had already been subjects for vigorous discussion.

Book The Hum of the World

Download or read book The Hum of the World written by Lawrence Kramer and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2021-06-21 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Hum of the World is an invitation to contemplate what would happen if we heard the world as attentively as we see it. Balancing big ideas, playful wit and lyrical prose, this imaginative volume identifies the role of sound in Western experience as the primary medium in which the presence and persistence of life acquires tangible form. The positive experience of aliveness is not merely in accord with sound, but inaccessible, even inconceivable, without it. Lawrence Kramer’s poetic book roves freely over music, media, language, philosophy, and science from the ancient world to the present, along the way revealing how life is apprehended through sounds ranging from pandemonium to the faint background hum of the world. This warm meditation on auditory culture uncovers the knowledge and pleasure waiting when we learn that the world is alive with sound.

Book Ghost Hunting For The Beginner

Download or read book Ghost Hunting For The Beginner written by Ken Russell and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2014-11-12 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The idea of ghosts existing is hard for most people to believe, but there is an accumulation of evidence in that appears to prove otherwise. Until one is actually involved in investigating the subject, an opinion cannot truly be formed one way or the other. The author, who has spent years of studying and investigating the paranormal, has written this book to help those who want to prove that there are ghosts in existence, or even to prove that they do not exist. With years of expertise in the subject, he keeps an open mind when confronted with any potentially paranormal phenomena, and checks everything very carefully before coming to a conclusion. With the help of this book, the paranormal investigator will be able to take steps to discover if there is a ghost haunting a location, who they were in life and why they're haunting that location now, and perhaps provide sufficient evidence to prove the ghost's existence, or that any phenomena experienced have a natural explanation.

Book The Geometry of Violence

Download or read book The Geometry of Violence written by Leonhard Praeg and published by AFRICAN SUN MeDIA. This book was released on 2007-09-01 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ?[Praeg] applies the notion of ?sacrificial violence?, as developed by Girard, to the genocide in Rwanda, necklace burnings in South Africa, and the phenomenon of family murders. He shows how there is an underlying logic tying these together, while at the same time resisting a unifying (modernist) discourse which attempts to eradicate the differences. This is an extremely interesting, at times fascinating, text. It is very well written and ... [the] insights gained leave no option but to rethink the manifestation of violence fundamentally.? ? Book The Nightmare of God

Download or read book The Nightmare of God written by Daniel Berrigan and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2009-04-11 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written during the 1970s and early 1980s at the height of Daniel Berrigan's work to stop the Vietnam war and nuclear weapons, The Nightmare of God offers a stunning commentary on the book of Revelation as a textbook of nonviolent resistance to empire. It begins in jail, where Berrigan sits after a 1976 protest at the Pentagon. As he takes us through the book of Revelation, Berrigan suggests that apocalyptic language and imagery are used to name Death (and its empires and wars) as anti-Christ, and challenges us to do the same today, to name every empire and war as anti-Christ, anti-humanity, anti-creation. Written with poetic insight and prophetic passion, Berrigan urges us to resist the culture of war as the early Christian heroes and martyrs did, so that we can end the suffering, heal humanity and join our place to worship the God of peace. Tom Lewis-Borbely's photo etchings complement the literary images. Daniel Berrigan describes Tom's art as healing the ancient killing split between ethics and imagination.

Book Turning the Tables on Apologetics

Download or read book Turning the Tables on Apologetics written by Jeffrey L. Hamm and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2018-05-22 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Does apologetic method matter? Helmut Thielicke argues that the method should conform to its own message. He thus rejects traditional apologetic methodologies beholden to supposedly neutral scientific and philosophical paradigms. Seeking to reform Christian conversation, Thielicke discovers a lost way of persuasion, that is, the table-turning approach found in Christ’s conversations. Whenever Jesus is questioned, he seldom answers directly. For he refuses to allow the conversation to be framed by an autonomous mindset, and instead responds with a counterquestion. Christ’s style of persuasion—as the controller of the question—subverts his hearers’ presuppositions and challenges their unbelief. This approach is the reverse of the defensive, answer-giving mode of traditional apologetics. In view of renewing Christ’s method, Thielicke insists that the task of apologetics is “something which is always on the offensive and, far from giving ready-made answers to the doubtful questions of men, turns the tables by putting questions on its own account—aggressive, violent, radical questions—and striking straight to the hearts of men.” Christian conversation must integrate Christ’s method with his message in order to advocate the message itself. For it is not the world that questions Christ, but rather Christ questions the world.
