Book The Haunting of Prescott Hall

Download or read book The Haunting of Prescott Hall written by Elaine A. Mcquown and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2011-11 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Marty was never happier than the day she drove away from Prescott Hall for the last time. She had moved into the spooky old mansion with her aunt Martha when her parents died in a car accident when she was a very young girl. The clock ticking behind the wall sent goose bumps down her spine, and the people from another time dancing in the third floor ballroom sent her running to her room to hide under the covers. When she looked up for the last time to wave goodbye to the house and saw the lace curtain blowing through the open bedroom window that she was sure she had closed; she knew the decision to sell the mansion and everything in it had been right. Charlotte had never been happier than the day she had moved into Prescott Hall. The old brick mansion needed some work so she had hired Jake, the local handyman. Though their relationship started out on rocky ground, they soon became best friends, and she began to think of him as the father she never had. When Jake found some very old family portraits in the attic and re-hung them, strange things began to happen. Charlotte could swear she heard a clock ticking behind the wall in the downstairs foyer. She even heard music and laughter coming from the third floor ballroom, but when she went to check, the room was empty. And then one night, a fierce storm blew up. The lightning was so bright, Charlotte's entire bedroom lit up. Standing by her bed was a man and she recognized him immediately. It was Robert Prescott, the eldest son in the portraits Jake found in the attic. He had died in 1840, on the same day as his brother and his wife.

Book Good Time Girls of Arizona and New Mexico

Download or read book Good Time Girls of Arizona and New Mexico written by Jan MacKell Collins and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2019-08-21 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As settlements and civilization moved West to follow the lure of mineral wealth and the trade of the Santa Fe Trail, prostitution grew and flourished within the mining camps, small towns, and cities of the nineteenth-century Southwest. Whether escaping a bad home life, lured by false advertising, or seeking to subsidize their income, thousands of women chose or were forced to enter an industry where they faced segregation and persecution, fines and jailing, and battled the other hazards of their profession. Some dreamed of escape through marriage or retirement, and some became infamous and even successful, but more often found relief only in death. An integral part of western history, the stories of these women continue to fascinate readers and captivate the minds of historians today. Arizona and New Mexico each had their share of working girls and madams like Sara Bowman and Dona Tules who remain notorious celebrities in the annals of history, but Collins also includes the stories of lesser-known women whose roles in this illicit trade help shape our understanding of the American West.

Book Gardens of Colony and State

Download or read book Gardens of Colony and State written by Alice G.B. Lockwood and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2000-05-30 with total page 500 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A rare and long out-of-print treasure of garden literature, Gardens of Colony and State returns in a special reprint edition. Widely considered the best reference on garden-making in the colonies and the Republic, the handsome two-volume set is a lasting record of American gardens and gardeners before 1840. The landmark publication traces the development of a uniquely American garden design, exploring early garden literature and its effect on colonial craftsmen, as well as pre-1800 account books of nurseries and seed houses. Also included are fascinating stories of early horticulturists who inspired the establishment and patronage of botanical gardens for research, plant exploration, education, and public enjoyment. An impressive collection of early prints and photographs—of gates and statues, benches and pergolas, landscape designs and views—invites you to stroll through some of America's most exquisite homes and gardens, many of which have long vanished. Gardens of Colony and State is an important contribution to the historic horticulture of America, and a collector's item to be enjoyed for many years.
