Download or read book Tales from the Haunted South written by Tiya Miles and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2015-08-12 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book Tiya Miles explores the popular yet troubling phenomenon of "ghost tours," frequently promoted and experienced at plantations, urban manor homes, and cemeteries throughout the South. As a staple of the tours, guides entertain paying customers by routinely relying on stories of enslaved black specters. But who are these ghosts? Examining popular sites and stories from these tours, Miles shows that haunted tales routinely appropriate and skew African American history to produce representations of slavery for commercial gain. "Dark tourism" often highlights the most sensationalist and macabre aspects of slavery, from salacious sexual ties between white masters and black women slaves to the physical abuse and torture of black bodies to the supposedly exotic nature of African spiritual practices. Because the realities of slavery are largely absent from these tours, Miles reveals how they continue to feed problematic "Old South" narratives and erase the hard truths of the Civil War era. In an incisive and engaging work, Miles uses these troubling cases to shine light on how we feel about the Civil War and race, and how the ghosts of the past are still with us.
Download or read book Twelve Nights at Rotter House written by J.W. Ocker and published by Turner Publishing Company. This book was released on 2019-10-29 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Felix Allsey is a travel writer with a keen eye for the paranormal, and he’s carved out a unique, if only slightly lucrative, niche for himself in nonfiction; he writes travelogues of the country’s most haunted places, after haunting them himself. When he convinces the owner of the infamous Rotterdam Mansion to let him stay on the premises for 13 nights, he believes he’s finally found the location that will bring him a bestseller. As with his other gigs, he sets rules for himself: no leaving the house for any reason, refrain from outside contact, and sleep during the day. When Thomas Ruth, Felix's oldest friend and fellow horror film obsessive, joins him on the project, the two dance around a recent and unspeakably painful rough-patch in their friendship, but eventually fall into their old rhythms of dark humor and movie trivia. That’s when things start going wrong: screams from upstairs, figures in the thresholds, and more than what should be in any basement. Felix realizes the book he’s writing, and his very state of mind, is tilting from nonfiction into all out horror, and the shocking climax answers a question that’s been staring these men in the face all along: In Rotter House, who’s haunting who?

Download or read book Kingdoms Unveiled written by Finisher and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2012-05-24 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The picture of grace came alive as puzzle pieces through nine states begin to unravel a web of deception. Meeting the redeemed in Ocean City set the path of visiting areas that held much history. The jewels in the rough in man's eyes were the crown jewels in the kingdom of Heaven. Satan did not like the ministry of amazing grace. What do the Pagans, the Illuminati, and the Freemasons all have in common? They all ran into a path designed by the one who is able to expose the things of darkness. As a servant for the Lord, I encountered all these forces that are against Jesus. The intriguing, mystifying journey, hoping to encourage the broken, the lost, and the weary, stirred up the forces of evil that tried to hang on to the vessels he wanted to continue to control. The Bride of Christ stood with victory as the separation of the sheep and the goats was being done before my eyes. The purpose of the journey I encountered was directed by God with vigilance to warn his beloved bride.

Download or read book Dark Places written by Barry Curtis and published by Reaktion Books. This book was released on 2009-02-15 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Horror films revel in taking viewers into shadowy places where the evil resides, whether it is a house, a graveyard or a dark forest. These mysterious spaces foment the terror at the heart of horror movies, empowering the ghastly creatures that emerge to kill and torment. With Dark Places, Barry Curtis leads us deep inside these haunted spaces to explore them – and the monstrous antagonists who dwell there. In this wide-ranging and compelling study, Curtis demonstrates how the claustrophobic interiors of haunted spaces in films connect to the ‘dark places’ of the human psyche. He examines diverse topics such as the special effects – ranging from crude to state-of-the-art – used in movies to evoke supernatural creatures; the structures, projections and architecture of horror movie sets; and ghosts as symbols of loss, amnesia, injustice and vengeance. Dark Places also examines the reconfiguration of the haunted house in film as a motel, an apartment, a road or a spaceship, and how these re-imagined spaces thematically connect to Gothic fictions. Curtis draws his examples from numerous iconic films – including Nosferatu, Psycho, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and The Shining – as well as lesser-known international works, which allow him to consider different cultural ideas of ‘haunting’. Japanese horror films and their Hollywood remakes – such as Ringu and The Ring, or Juon and The Grudge – come under particular scrutiny, as he explores Japanese cinema’s preoccupation with malevolent forces from the past. Whether you love the splatter of blood or prefer to hide under the couch, Dark Places cuts to the heart of why we are drawn to carnage.
Download or read book The Harlot Demon Unveiled written by Maxine Malcolm and published by Author House. This book was released on 2011-06-28 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Harlot Demon Unveiled is a stunning revelation of the harlot spirit, a principality of the forces of darkness; revealed as the death angel, the spirit of the great whore of Revelation 17,18, & 19 I believe I have been divinely chosen in this last hour to manifest and declare the name of the Sovereign Yahweh and his son Yahshua. To declare that Yahweh rules in all heaven and earth; that He still relates to mankind and whosoever will seek him with all their heart, He will reveal to them the mysteries of the gospel (an abundance of truth). To reveal the hidden force and agenda of Satan the enemy of or souls, and the evil spirits that are influencing our loved ones to murder, commit suicide, and all types of hateful crimes against each other. The word of Yahweh warns us not to be ignorant of Satan's devices "lest he get an advantage over us." (see, II Corinthians 2:11) Yahweh declares that His people are destroyed for the lack of knowledge. (see, Hosea 4:6) (Proverbs 7:24-27) Harken unto Me now therefore o ye children and attend to the words of my mouth. Let not thine heart decline to her ways, go not astray on her paths. For she has cast down many wounded; Yea, many strong men have been slain by her. (The harlot demon) Her house is the way to hell, going down to the chambers of death. My earnest desire is that through the revelation of the Holy Scripture and the disclosure of some if my personal experiences the reader will be transformed by the wealth of knowledge and truth. Yahweh sent his word and healed them and delivered them from all their destructions. (see. Psalms 107:20)
Download or read book Cinema of the Dark Side written by Shohini Chaudhuri and published by Edinburgh University Press. This book was released on 2014-11-17 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A ground-breaking comparative analysis of cinematic images of atrocity, combining critical perspectives on contemporary film and human rights.A few days after 9/11, US Vice-President Dick Cheney invoked the need for the USA to work the dark side in its global War on Terror. Cinema of the Dark Side explores how contemporary cinema treats state-sponsored atrocity, evoking multiple landscapes of state terror. Investigating the ethical potential of cinematic atrocity images, this book argues that while films help to create and confirm normative perceptions about atrocities, they can also disrupt those perceptions and build alternative ones. Asserting a crucial distinction between morality and ethics, it proposes a new conceptualisation of human rights cinema, one that repositions human rights morality within an ethical framework that reflects upon the causes and contexts of violence. It builds upon theories of embodied perception to offer a new perspective on the ethics of spectatorship, providing readers with fresh insights into how we respond to atrocity images and the ethical issues at stake.Covering a diverse spectrum of 21st century cinema, this book deals with documentary and fictional representations of atrocity such as state-sanctioned torture, genocide, enforced disappearance, deportation, and apartheid. It features close analysis of contemporary films, including Zero Dark Thirty, Standard Operating Procedure, Hotel Rwanda, Sometimes in April, Nostalgia for the Light, Chronicle of an Escape, Children of Men, District 9, Waltz With Bashir, and Paradise Now.
Download or read book The Haunted House in Women s Ghost Stories written by Emma Liggins and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-06-30 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores Victorian and modernist haunted houses in female-authored ghost stories as representations of the architectural uncanny. It reconsiders the gendering of the supernatural in terms of unease, denial, disorientation, confinement and claustrophobia within domestic space. Drawing on spatial theory by Gaston Bachelard, Henri Lefebvre and Elizabeth Grosz, it analyses the reoccupation and appropriation of space by ghosts, women and servants as a means of addressing the opposition between the past and modernity. The chapters consider a range of haunted spaces, including ancestral mansions, ghostly gardens, suburban villas, Italian churches and houses subject to demolition and ruin. The ghost stories are read in the light of women’s non-fictional writing on architecture, travel, interior design, sacred space, technology, the ideal home and the servant problem. Women writers discussed include Elizabeth Gaskell, Margaret Oliphant, Vernon Lee, Edith Wharton, May Sinclair and Elizabeth Bowen. This book will appeal to students and researchers in the ghost story, Female Gothic and Victorian and modernist women’s writing, as well as general readers with an interest in the supernatural.

Download or read book Paradigms of Paranoia written by Samuel Chase Coale and published by University Alabama Press. This book was released on 2019-05-14 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An examination of the American fascination with conspiracy and the distrust it sows The recent popularity of The DaVinci Code and The Matrix trilogy exemplifies the fascination Americans have with conspiracy-driven subjects. Though scholars have suggested that in modern times the JFK assassination initiated an industry of conspiracy (i.e., Vietnam and the Pentagon Papers, Area 51, Iran-Contra Affair), Samuel Chase Coale reminds us in this book that conspiracy is foundational in American culture—from the apocalyptic Biblical narratives in early Calvinist households to the fear of Mormon, Catholic, Jewish, and immigrant populations in the 19th century. Coale argues that contemporary culture—a landscape characterized by doubt, ambiguity, fragmentation, information overload, and mistrust—has fostered a radical skepticism so pervasive that the tendency to envision or construct conspiracies often provides the best explanation for the chaos that surrounds us. Conspiracy as embodied in narrative form provides a fertile field for explorations of the anxiety lying at the heart of the postmodern experience. Thomas Pynchon's The Crying of Lot 49, Don DeLillo's Underworld, Toni Morrison's Jazz and Paradise, Joan Didion's Democracy, Tim O'Brien's In the Lake of the Woods, and Paul Auster's New York City Trilogy are some of the texts Coale examines for their representations of isolated individuals at the center of massive, anonymous master plots that lay beyond their control. These narratives remind us that our historical sense of national identity has often been based on the demonizing of others and that American fiction arose and still flourishes with apocalyptic visions.
