Outer Banks fisherman Alton Mackey finds himself pitted against local government, the US Park Service, the Army Corps of Engineers, the US Coast Guard and the US Fish and Wildlife agencies after his trawler the Hatterask becomes shoaled while crossing the treacherous waters of Oregon Inlet. As the days pass Mackey is pressured to remove his boat or face its destruction by dynamite. Mackey cracks under the pressure and takes a hostage which then turns the local community upside-down as tempers flair, sides are drawn and the standoff escalates. Stirring the conflicts is the approach of category 5 hurricane Crystal as it races up the East Coast. The page-turning story is told from the perspective of 9 different characters, each person simply doing his or her job. The problems of land use and the little guy verses his government is timeless. The story could be set today, or in the 1980s or the 1950s.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New archeological discoveries may finally solve the greatest mystery of Colonial America in this history of Roanoke and Hatteras Islands. Established on what is now North Carolina’s Roanoke Island, the Roanoke Colony was intended to be England’s first permanent settlement in North America. But in 1590, the entire population disappeared without a trace. The only clue to their fate was the word “Croatoan” carved into a tree. For centuries, the legend of the Lost Colony has captivated imaginations. Now, archaeologists from the University of Bristol, working with the Croatoan Archaeological Society, have uncovered tantalizing clues to the fate of the colony. In The Lost Colony and Hatteras Island, Hatteras native and amateur archaeologist Scott Dawson compiles what scholars know about the Lost Colony along with what scholars have found beneath the soil of Hatteras.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THE HATTERAS AFFAIR presents a fictionalized account of a German plot to infiltrate the coastal defenses of America early in World War II. In the Spring of 1942, isolationist America was suffering heavy losses at the hands of marauding U-boat fleets operating with virtual impunity off the Eastern Seaboard near Cape Hatteras. Eager to combat the U-boat menace, the Department of the Navy turns to Great Britain who agrees to supply a flotilla of converted trawlers equipped with the latest in anti-submarine detection gear. Germany's premier intelligence service, the SS Gestapo, learns of the Allied scheme by extorting top secret information from a Jewish-American civilian naval worker whose sister is imprisoned in a Nazi concentration camp in Poland. The German Navy High Command, directed by the Fuhrer, dispatches their finest U-boat crew and commander with a Gestapo team, to Virginia on a secret mission to sink the trawlers at their docks. THE HATTERAS AFFAIR culminates off the coast of North Carolina's Outer Banks, where the main character, a battle reluctant Coast Guard Commander turned trawler captain, confronts the German U-boat and it's decorated commander while on patrol near Hatteras Island. The sea battle produces a surprising outcome as both commanders lose their ships and are forced together in an epic struggle for survival in treacherous seas off Cape Hatteras. THE HATTERAS AFFAIR contains several intriguing sub-plots that involve the compromised Jewish family, the trawler commander and crew, the Gestapo and U-boat teams, and residents of the Outer Banks. Each of the sub-plots add an interesting dimension that supports and enriches the novel's story line.

Book excerpt: "The Voyages and Adventures of Captain Hatteras" (French: "Voyages et aventures du capitaine Hatteras") is an adventure novel by Jules Verne in two parts: "The English at the North Pole" (French: "Les Anglais au pôle nord") and "The desert of ice" (French: "Le Désert de glace"). The novel was published for the first time in 1864. The definitive version from 1866 was included into Voyages Extraordinaires series ("The Extraordinary Voyages"). Although it was the first book of the series it was labeled as number two. Three of Verne's books from 1863-65 ("Five Weeks in a Balloon", "Journey to the Center of the Earth", and "From the Earth to the Moon") were added into the series retroactively. Captain Hatteras shows many similarities with British explorer John Franklin.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Captain Hatteras has one goal remaining in life, to reach the North Pole at all costs. With a purpose built steamship he sets out on the greatest voyage of his life but when their fortunes turn, his crew mutinies, destroying their ship in the process. Stranded in the Arctic in winter, Hatteras with a small group of his remaining crew will push further in to the white waste, relying on their intuition and no small amount of luck to survive. What they find will leave them changed men forever. It is a gripping journey marked by Verne’s mastery of science fiction, creating a poignant and memorable conclusion for a brilliant character. Jules Verne (1828-1905) was a French novelist, poet and playwright who is remembered for his significant contribution to the science fiction genre. With the help of editor Pierre-Jules Hetzel he wrote a series of books called "Extraordinary Travels", which includes "Journey to the Centre of the Earth" (1864), "Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea" (1870), and "Around the World in Eighty Days" (1873). Due to his incredible vision he is often given the moniker ‘The Father of Science Fiction’, shared with fellow science fiction author H.G. Wells. Widely popular with both children and adults, Verne is one of the most translated authors of all time, second only to Agatha Christie and Shakespeare.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A letter from a sea captain, signed only with cryptic initials, directs an experienced sailor to built and outfit a ship, and to assemble a crew to sail on a dangerous adventure. The voyage starts towards a northerly destination with, as far as anyone knows, no captain aboard. After some time at sea, the captain finally appears and announces his identity, and his plan to sail to the North Pole. The crew faces dangers and hardship as they fight their way through the icy seas, while the captain single-mindedly drives them to find a passage ever farther north. In his usual style, Verne includes lots of history and scientific explanations in the story. The Adventures of Captain Hatteras was first published in 1864 under the title Voyages et aventures du capitaine Hatteras. The polar regions were not completely explored at this time. Verne speculated that the North Pole would be reachable by sea, and with the story set in 1861, it would be almost another fifty years before an explorer reached the pole. This book is part of the Standard Ebooks project, which produces free public domain ebooks.

"The Desert of Ice" is the second part of Jules Verne’s novel "The Adventures of Captain Hatteras" from 1864. Captain Hatteras and his crew who have survived the long winter on island "New America" continue their expedition to the North Pole. They discover an island with an active volcano and it turns out that the exact location of the pole is in the crater. Is this the end to the long, difficult and dangerous expedition? If nobody survives how will the rest of the world learn about it? Is it possible that the Captain survives, and is the information he gained more important and valuable than his own health and well being? Jules Verne (1828-1905) was a French novelist who mostly wrote adventure fiction inspired by the scientific advances of the 19th century. With the help of editor Pierre-Jules Hetzel he wrote a series of books called "Extraordinary Travels", which includes "Journey to the Center of the Earth" (1864), "Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea" (1870), and "Around the World in Eighty Days" (1873). There have been many film adaptations of Jules Verne’s books with the most notable being "Journey to the Center of The Earth" (2008) starring Brendan Fraser and Josh Hutcherson (The Hunger Games), "Around the World in 80 Days" (1956), and "Journey 2: The Mysterious Island" (2012) starring Dwayne Johnson. Widely popular with both children and adults, Verne is one of the most translated authors of all time, and still inspires people the world over.
