Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Malcolm MacLeod begins his history of Memorial University College by describing the forces that promoted the creation of Newfoundland's own higher-education institution and the conditions that frustrated its advancement, such as the uneasy development of educational co-operation between religious denominations. MacLeod goes on to analyse different aspects of institutional life to 1950, such as the institution's governance and patterns of staffing, the students' social backgrounds, and the college's curriculum. He also outlines Memorial's links with other aspects of society and provides the historical and social framework for its development, leading us through the optimism of the twenties and the depression of the thirties to the abandonment of self-government and the overwhelming changes that came with and after the war. He concludes by contrasting Memorial's slow and uncertain progress before 1950 with its achievements since, and by placing Memorial in the context of the development of higher education in Canada and the modernization of Newfoundland.

Book In the Footsteps of Hemingway From Pamplona to Bimini

Download or read book In the Footsteps of Hemingway From Pamplona to Bimini written by Ray Knight and published by M-Y Books Limited. This book was released on 2016-01-01 with total page 95 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ernest Hemingway casts a very long shadow – especially the one thrown over Ray Knight by the Bahamian sunset on Hemingway's beloved islands of Bimini. Using the late literary giant's terse aphorisms and mordant quips as springboards for his own lean and drum-tight prose, Ray Knight invites us to join him on a journey from Pamplona to Bimini, in the footsteps of his literary hero. This collection of short stories, anecdotes and excerpts from the author's novels runs the gamut of emotions, from pathos and tragedy to humor and unabashed sentimentality – from a moving and thought-provoking look at the ethical ramifications of euthanasia to a boxing tale that pulls no punches, and without which no homage to Hemingway would be complete. Whether you add an extra kick to your coffee break one tale at a time or settle down with a glass of rum and spend an evening 'In The Footsteps of Hemingway', you're in for an enjoyable and edifying read – and a great introduction to the author's full-length works. The Vet's Dilemma:- A personal look at one man's anguished choice between humanity and morality. What will he do? What would you do? The Tears of a Clown:- A clown's antics bring joy to thousands of children but behind the make-up is a face racked with pain. Monty:- A man's relationship with his car confounds his daughter and leads to a traumatic and deadly conclusion.. Shadows :- A man struggles for survival in a harsh and dangerous environment. Voices from his past come to haunt him. Will they save or condemn him? A Father's Love:- A father risks the wrath of his community and his life in a desperate attempt rescue his son from the horror of addiction. It Tolls for Thee:- A washed-up boxer is offered one last, desperate shot at the big time – will he risk his life for one final chance of glory? Right of Passage:- A young hunter faces the ultimate test – will he become a legend or just a memory? A sample chapter from 'The Mountain'... Felicia's Cabin:- A kidnapped woman faces up to her captors in this sample chapter from' The Hatcher File'... Walking With the Bulls:- The author recalls his experience in Pamplona in 1977 – a year of tragic events at the Festival of San Fermin Every Job in Town:- An amusing recollection of the author's time in Sydney during 1980, when Australia was a land full of opportunities for a young man... either to get rich or get into a lot trouble!

Book Linkages and Feedbacks in Orogenic Systems

Download or read book Linkages and Feedbacks in Orogenic Systems written by Richard D. Law and published by Geological Society of America. This book was released on 2017-09-11 with total page 393 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dedicated to Bob Hatcher, this Memoir explores linkages between tectonic processes through a series of field-, numerical- and laboratory-based studies, concentrating on feedback mechanisms within ancient and evolving orogens by which individual or linked tectonic processes may influence or predetermine the operation of other processes in space and time. Case studies cover a wide range of ancient to modern orogens: the Svecofennian of southern Finland, the Gyeonggi Massif of Korea, the Caledonides of northern Scotland, the Variscan of the East European craton, the Appalachians of the eastern United States, the European Alps and Dinarides, north Cascades of the northwestern United States, and the Himalaya. Emphasis is placed on integration between data sets developed from a wide range of analytical approaches, including: field mapping, seismic reflection profiling, strain analyses, petrology, isotopic dating, and numerical modeling-based studies of thermal evolution associated with tectonic processes such as thrust-related burial and exhumation.

Book The Colantonio Files

Download or read book The Colantonio Files written by Frederick A. Colantonio and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2016-10-27 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The people I've met in my life were the impetus for writing this book. They are the good, bad and ugly people. Those I remember the most are those who were good to me and helped me along the way to become a professional broadcaster and newspaper journalist. Others were not kind and often said aloud that I would fail at achieving my goals. One relative went so far as to ask "Why can't you hold a job?"" He knew nothing of how unstable the job market was at the time for the jobs I held. It did not deter me; it fueled my desire to succeed. I knew what I wanted out of life and that is what I am currently doing. Sadly many who were unkind to me were unwilling to help people in need. Coffins don't have pockets was a phrase my parents often used. My mother said to me that she had two words of wisdom for me. They were not 'thank you those two words were BE NICE. It is the legacy I want to leave behind.

Book The Good Nurse

    Book Details:
  • Author : Charles Graeber
  • Publisher : Twelve

  • Pages : 353 pages

Download or read book The Good Nurse written by Charles Graeber and published by Twelve. This book was released on 2013-04-15 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The mesmerizing basis of the movie starring Eddie Redmayne and Jessica Chastain—a “stunning book...that should and does bring to mind In Cold Blood”—takes you inside the mind of America's most prolific serial killer, whose 16-year long "nursing" career left as many as 400 dead. (New York Times) Edgar Award Nomination, Mystery Writers of America BBC (Top Ten Books of the Year) “The best books I read this year” (top ten books, EW) —Stephen King “The Best Journalism of the Year.". —The Daily Beast “The most terrifying book published this year. It is also one of the most thoughtful...call it literary true crime...” —Kirkus Reviews ("Best Books of the year") After his December 2003 arrest, registered nurse Charlie Cullen was quickly dubbed "The Angel of Death" by the media. But Cullen was no mercy killer, nor was he a simple monster. He was a favorite son, a husband and beloved father, a best friend and a celebrated caregiver. Implicated in the deaths of as perhaps as many as 400 patients, he was also perhaps the most prolific serial killer in American history. When, in March of 2006, Charles Cullen was marched from his final sentencing in an Allentown, Pennsylvania, courthouse into a waiting police van, it seemed certain that the chilling secrets of his life, career, and capture would disappear with him. Now, in a riveting piece of investigative journalism nearly ten years in the making, Charles Graeber gives us the unbelievable true story. Based on hundreds of pages of previously unseen police records, wire-tap recordings and videotapes and interviews with whistleblowers and confidential informants, and years of exclusive jailhouse conversations with Cullen himself, the homicide detectives who worked against the clock and administrators to try and finally crack the code on Cullen’s crimes, and Cullen’s fellow nurse Amy, an overworked single mom asked to choose between protecting her friend Charlie and stopping a potential serial killer, THE GOOD NURSE weaves an urgent and terrifying tale of madness, humanity and heroism. Cullen's murderous career in the world's most trusted profession spanned sixteen years and nine hospitals. Time and again he was fired or allowed to resign. But Cullen continued to work and kill, shielded by a hospital system that, by accident or design, successfully protected the institution while failing to protect patients. THE GOOD NURSE is a searing indictment of a crushing and dehumanizing for-profit medical system, and an inspiring human story of the previously unknown individuals who chose to risk their jobs and lives to do the right thing. Mesmerizing and irresistibly paced, this book will make you look at hospitals and the people who work in them in an entirely different way.

Book The Oxford Handbook of Film Music Studies

Download or read book The Oxford Handbook of Film Music Studies written by David Neumeyer and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2013-11-04 with total page 696 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Music has been an integral part of film exhibition from its beginnings in the late nineteenth century. With the arrival of sound film in the late 1920s, music became part of a complex multimedia text. Although industry, fan-oriented, and scholarly literatures on film music have existed from early on, and music was frequently among the topics discussed and disputed, only in the past thirty years has sustained scholarly attention gone to music in visual media, beginning with the feature film. The Oxford Handbook of Film Music Studies charts that interdisciplinary activity in its primary areas of inquiry: history, genre and medium, analysis and criticism, and interpretation. The handbook provides an overview to the field on a large scale. Chapters in Part I range from the relations of music and the soundtrack to opera and film, textual representation of film sound, and film music as studied by cognitive scientists. Part II addresses genre and medium with chapters focusing on cartoons and animated films, the film musical, music in arcade and early video games, and the interplay of film, music, and recording over the past half century. The chapters in Part III offer case studies in interpretation along with extended critical surveys of theoretical models of gender, sexuality, and subjectivity as they impinge on music and sound. The three chapters on analysis in Part IV are diverse: one systematically models harmonies used in recent films, a second looks at issues of music and film temporality, and a third focuses on television. Chapters on history (Part V) cover topics including musical antecedents in nineteenth-century theater, the complex issues in sychronization of music in performance of early (silent) films, international practices in early film exhibition, and the symphony orchestra in film.

Book The Redemption of Charlie Devlin

Download or read book The Redemption of Charlie Devlin written by Mr. Gerald Vincent Hickey and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2001-10-30 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Readers ranging from twenty somethings to octogenarians have raved about Gerald Hickeys The Redemption of Charlie Devlin. --Bill Connolly of Ocala, Florida, said that he had a difficult time putting the novel down. --Reader Gloria Naas of Kingston, Ohio, commented, "It left an impact on me like no other book Ive read. Its the only book I have ever read twice." --Julie McGuire of Colorado Springs, Colorado, called the novel "a great read." Here is a synopsis of the book, also acclaimed as well written and insightful: Recently divorced by his attractive wife, Sheila, and removed from the crime beat at The Phoenix Post, Charlie Devlin feels adrift in a murky sea of uncertainty. He plies himself with alcohol as he gropes for an anchor. Traumatized by his divorce, he has lost his touch as a crime reporter. His city editor has placed him on probation and assigned him to the education beat. Charlie has fought boredom on his new job for several weeks, when someone murders Leslie Cashman, a dedicated young high school teacher. As a crime reporter, he became inured to homicides, but the brutal murder of Leslie gnaws at him. The turbulent eighties are winding down when the teacher is slain in Verde Hills, a Phoenix suburb. Although Charlie pines for Sheila, he was beginning to have tender feelings for Leslie, whom he met when he interviewed her for a story. Her death changes the lives of several people, in addition to 33-year-old Charlie. He decides to try to help police solve the murder case. ...He saw a fresh vision of the fair sex in Leslies caring, hopeful spirit. She might have restored his faith in women. The world needed more, not fewer, people like Leslie.... The epitome of a rootless urbanite in the new Southwest, Charlie is a flesh-and-blood character with recognizable faults and frustrations, not a larger-than-life hero with nerves of steel. He typifies legions of thirty-somethings who have fallen short of their own or others expectations. As he tries to atone for his failings by helping solve Leslies murder, he finds evil in unexpected places. He stumbles on an unrelated homicide and becomes involved in the case, before he can find the key to Leslies death.
