Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Gospel in the Gospels The title of the present volume is intended to indicate that, while it aims to be an exposition of the whole Gospel of Jesus Christ, it does not purpose to be a whole or final exposition of that Gospel. It looks forward definitely to a further and fuller expression of it. We have here to do with the Gospel, not in its developed utterance as that of the New Testament or of the Church, but only so far as it is contained in our canonical Gospels or can by ourselves be deduced from them. My own position is that, while the Gospel as an act or fact is complete in Jesus Christ Himself, the rationale of its operation in human salvation is best interpreted and stated by St. Paul. My true objective point has therefore been the completer construction of the Gospel according to St. Paul, to be treated in a volume to follow the present one. That the epistles of St. Paul are an interpretation only, and not a transformation nor even an essential modification, of the Gospel of our Lord is - next to the hope of casting a single new ray of light upon the nature of the Gospel itself - the point which I have most at heart to prove in the end. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Gospels as Historical Documents, Vol. 3: The Fourth Gospel In this volume, for reasons which I have given in the Epilogue, I bring this work to a close, in spite of a different plan which I sketched in the preface to my first volume. The present volume is occupied with the Fourth Gospel, as the last was with the Synoptic Gospels. Questions, however, relating to the authorship of the Fourth Gospel came before us to a considerable extent in the first volume owing to their connexion with the history of the reception of the four Canonical Gospels in the Church, which was the special subject of that volume. In the present volume I am principally concerned with the form and character of the Fourth Gospel itself, though I have had occasion to add a little to what I before wrote on its use in the Church, and the tradition about John son of Zebedee. Possibly an explanation may be due from me to any readers of the two former volumes who have felt some interest in my work, with regard to the long delay - no less than eleven years - since the publication of my last volume. This has to a considerable extent been caused by the intricate nature of the problems which the subject presents, and the amount of controversial literature dealing with them, requiring to be mastered. But in addition to this I have often found it impossible even for some months together to work at them at all owing to official duties. The recovery of threads which have been dropped has often been a difficult and laborious task; but I hope that there has been some gain in one's having been compelled to come back even to the same parts of the subject repeatedly, and to weigh more than once conclusions already before arrived at. For a comprehensive study, it utilizes echoic allusion, cultural background, and narrative criticism. It explores the textual tradition of Deut 23:1–8 in Jewish literature, with a particular focus on Isaiah’s inclusive presentation of “eunuchs” and “foreigners” in contrast to the Deuteronomy stipulation for the assembly of the Lord. This work also explores the ancient practice of castration, the Jewish exiles in Elephantine, and Jewish pilgrimage to reconstruct the cultural background of the Ethiopian eunuch. Additionally, it focuses on Luke’s authorial role in presenting the gospel’s geographic, ethnic, and religious expansion to identify the Ethiopian’s ethnic and religious identity in the narrative development of the three trajectories. The conclusion drawn is that the Ethiopian eunuch cannot be identified as an uncircumcised gentile. Instead, he is more like an African man of Jewish descent, included in the Abrahamic covenant but excluded from the cultic setting of worship in the temple.
