They are an elite military force created to guard the Hub and do the job that the effete diplomats of the Hub will not and dare not do. There are the Grand Harriers, who acts as a large force, and the Petit Harriers, who are sent on special missions¾and tend to have a hell of a lot more fun! Novellas by S.N. Book Alien Theory

    Book Details:
  • Author : Patricia Monk
  • Publisher :
  • Release : 2006
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 432 pages

Download or read book Alien Theory written by Patricia Monk and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the early days of pulp magazines to contemporary works of science fiction, the subject of the alien has been a fertile and enduring--if not also the most vital--element of the genre. In Alien Theory, author Patricia Monk asserts that the creation of the alien in short fiction contributes substantially to humanity's understanding of its present status and future potential in the universe. By employing a Jungian and archetypal approach to these stories, Monk attempts to direct the attention of readers to the significance of the vast body of imaginative fiction about the alien, arguing that studying the alien will reveal why this archetype is necessary in the development of humanity's understanding of its own intrinsic nature as a sapient being. When a science fiction writer writes about aliens, Monk asserts, he or she is saying something that can--and should--be taken seriously by readers. Furthermore, it is being expressed in a particular story-telling mode that deserves to be treated with respect. By discussing the creation of the form of the science-fictional alien, its psyche and the context in which aliens and humans interact, Monk brings into focus a topic that has not been given the rightful discussion it deserves. In addition to examining the alien in the science fiction short story, novella, and novelette, Monk evaluates its role in pre-postmodernist and postmodernist criticism and theory. The author also draws on relevant writings by editors, writers, and fans--including editorial letter columns and reviews--to place the stories in the context of science fiction. By drawing on all of these sources, Alien Theory brings into focus a topic that will be of interest not only to academics and students, but also to the general reader.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Royal Navy helicopter pilot’s firsthand account of British Special Forces operations in the Falklands Islands and a failed raid on mainland Argentina. In 1982, Argentina’s invasion of the Falkland Islands initiated an undeclared war with the United Kingdom. During the ten-week conflict, Colonel Richard Hutchings served as a commando helicopter pilot with 846 Naval Air Squadron flying Sea King helicopters. Though the sensitive nature of his experiences prevented him from telling his story for decades, Hutchings now provides a firsthand chronicle of the Falklands War, offering fascinating insight into the conduct of operations there. Colonel Hutchings was charged with transporting Special Force units onto the enemy occupied islands, either to gather intelligence or conduct offensive operations, including the Special Air Service's successful Pebble Island raid and its ill-fated raid on mainland Argentina. That raid, known as Operation MIKADO, has been little discussed. But as Captain of the Sea King involved, Hutchings gives an authoritative account of what went wrong both in the air and on the ground. He details the circumstances of his crash-landing, encounters with the Chilean authorities and British diplomats in Santiago, as well as the debriefing in an MI6 safe house on return to the UK

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume of the navy's history covers the period from 1976 to 1990. It examines the navy's success in keeping abreast of advances in technology in step with progressive self-reliance. In a decade and a half of innovation, the navy equipped its indigenously built frigates, corvettes, and other vessels with combinations of the latest available weapons and equipment from the Soviet Union, from Europe, and from indigenous sources. A tiny "ship design cell," which in 1965 was designing yard craft, was by 1990 designing an aircraft carrier, submarines, and missile destroyers. The new acquisitions from the Soviet Union ranged from missile destroyers, conventional submarines, and long-range reconnaissance aircraft, to minesweepers. All these high-tech inductions needed to be operated and manned by better-educated and better-trained personnel. New maintenance, repair, and refit facilities had to be created. The increase in the volume of spares and the diversity of sources compelled modernization of the logistics system. This volume analyzes how these problems were tackled.
