Book Shoeing and Balancing the Light Harness Horse Classic Reprint

Download or read book Shoeing and Balancing the Light Harness Horse Classic Reprint written by James Clark and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-22 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Shoeing and Balancing the Light Harness Horse The great interest that has been manifested by all classes Of harness horsemen in the youngsters Of late, an interest that is con stantly increasing, I am pleased to be able to say, and the hundreds of enquiries I have received from all parts Of the country since I have been on The Horse World staff, for a work devoted to this subject, prompted me to write this little book. If you are looking for something elaborate, something couched in collegiate language, and clothed in a mantle Of high - brow verbiage, you would better draw and go to the stable, because you are outside the money right now. What there is of this is written in plain English, for two reasons It is intended more for the beginners, theshoer. Owner and trainer, .than for the experi enced in the business, although the wisest may possibly be benefited in a small way by a care ful perusal Of its contents. My other reason for writing very plainly is that it is the only lan guage I am familiar with. W'riting a book of this size looks easy, but it is not in this instance, because I have con densed everything, trying to put in clear and concise form, in these few pages, information that could easily be made to fill a bo'ok twenty five times as large'as this one. If, however, you and the central figure in your dreams of glory on the trotting tracks, are in the least benefited by reason of its having been written, I shall feel well repaid for my humble efforts in your behalf. This book was released on 2017-07-19 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Training and Treatment of the Horse In connection with the above subject I would like to call the attention of the reader to one more fact, which is well known to all who handle hors es, and that is that the herse, especially in the summer time, is constantly afflicted with a sore back caused by the galling of the saddle.' When the sore is discovered the owner's first step is to apply some remedy to heal the sore, but he pays no attention whatever to the cause of the sore. The cause is usually found in the driver. When he stops the horse he jumps onto the shafts on one side or the other and then to the ground. When he gets ready to start again he jumps onto the shafts and then to his seat. The average weight of the driver is from one hundred twenty five-to one hundred sixty pounds. Is it to be won dered at that when this weight is thrown on the shafts on one side or the other, w1th the ordinary harness as it is usually used, that the horse's back can be anything else but sore? The part of the back covered by the saddle is usually very tender, = caused by constant perspiration in the summer time and no opportunity given to dry out by reason of the air. Being excluded by the saddle; Now, this tender part receives the worst treat_5. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Complete Horseman I think it will be generally admitted that there is no means of travelling out of which more pleasure can be got than with horses, either in saddle or in harness. Only in one respect is a motor - car superior - that of speed. And this is a matter of very small importance unless a man has to cover a certain distance in a very limited time. When this is the case pleasure does not enter into the argument. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Recollections of Men and Horses Products in the United States for that year was - nearly double the gross earnings of the railroads added to the value of the production of all the mines of the country for the same period. This official statement opened the eyes of feverish municipalities to the importance of agricultural life. The value of horses owned by farmers is placed at In 1905 horses increased in num ber to and in value to The type of the farm horse has been elevated' by the dissemination of blood, the Virtue of which was proved by the sharpest of physical tests. For genera tions the progressive farmer has striven to excel in the creation of an animal combining activity With strength, and his trial ground has been the road and oval at the County or District Fair. He has labored unceasingly to eliminate the running gait, and to establish the trotting gait. The harness horse, not the saddle horse, has been his hope and pride. Download or read book Things Worth Knowing about Horses Classic Reprint written by Harry Hieover and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-29 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Things Worth Knowing About Horses Having said so much about harness horses, I am induced to mention certain habits many horses have that are very annoying. Hugging the pole is one. It greatly annoys the other horse, and' he will pro bably learn to do the same thing, not from imitation, but from leaning inwards so as to enable him the better to stand against the other leaning on him. I have often seen a pair of pieces thus going, each leaning on the other, till they might be figuratively likened to a pair of open compasses. It is extremely dangerous in frosty weather, or where the road Or pavement is from any cause slippery. It has the effect of causing the pole horses in descending a hill to draw straight from the pole, by which they are at their full length; whereas, horses going (as they should do) a little wider than on ordinary occasions. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Race Horse: How to Buy, Train, and Run Him As to the knowledge requisite, the apprenticeship which qualifies an uneducated lad to undertake, at a later period, the charge of a racing stable, would, of course, qualify one superior to him in this respect for the same task. This is an ordeal to which few gentle men will submit. In place thereof they can learn the art of training from observation, from experience, and from oral or written instruction. The last I have in the ensuing pages endeavoured, and, I h0pe, with some suc cess, to impart, success which I believe will attend the efforts of those who deem this little work worthy of their perusal and attention, and who intelligently inter pret the precepts and practice therein enjoined. These have been derived from actual experience of training in New Zealand, the West Indies, the United Kingdom, and the United States of America, and from observa tion of the methods employed by the best and the worst trainers, and the success or failure attending their efforts, as well as from the Opinion of those whose reputation is deservedly high, and therefore worthy of consideration. Download or read book The Horse and How to Care for Him written by C. T. Davies and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-10-05 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Horse and How to Care for Him: How to Choose a Horse, Tell His Age, Feed, Stable, Harness and Train Him, and Keep Him in Good Health The class of animal most likely to be required by the average horse-owner is the harness horse, so that in considering the various points we will keep this ideal in view. In many respects the harness horse requires the combined points of a saddle-horse and a cart horse, and, leaving out of the question exaggerated examples, such as that galloping machine the race-horse, or that equine giant the Percheron, we shall find that the bony conformation of the one differs very little, except in a minor degree, from that of the others. Such differences as exist are as a rule muscular, and as we go along we shall endeavor to indicate the various classes of work for which each variety of conformation is best suited. Book The Horse His Breeding Care and Use Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Horse His Breeding Care and Use Classic Reprint written by David Buffum and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-06 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Horse His Breeding, Care and Use During the greater part of my life it has fallen to my lot to have a great deal to do with horses; in breeding them and studying them, in raising them and breaking them to harness, in their care and feeding and in the cure of their vices, when they were so unfortunate as to have them, a large part of my time has been occupied. The knowledge that is gained in the school of experience is generally conceded to be of the most valuable and practical kind, and it has occurred to me that some of the things I have thus been able to learn may be of much value to others. In handling "inquiries and answers" concerning equine matters for a great American periodical, I have often been surprised to see, in the letters that have come to me from all parts of the country and from people of widely varying means and conditions, how similar they are in kind. Almost invariably the inquiries concern such practical matters as how to feed and stable, how to breed so as to produce a good horse for the purpose intended, how to break to harness, and what to do to cure such vices as running away, shying, kicking, or balking.
