Book The Harlot s Progress Vol 2

Download or read book The Harlot s Progress Vol 2 written by Honore ́ De Balzac and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-07-19 with total page 446 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Harlot's Progress, Vol. 2: And Other Stories As has been noted in the Introduction to the first volume of the Splendeurs et Miseres des Courtisanes, La der niere Incarnation de Vautrin, though forming, according to the author's conception, an integral part of that work, stands in more ways than one aloof from it. It was much later written than the earlier parts, except Ou menent les mauvais Chemins, and it was later written even than that. More over, it marks in two different ways a much maturer stage of the author's ideas as to heroic convicts - a stage in which, I think, it is not fanciful to detect a considerable reduction of the gigantesque element and a substitution of something else for it. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Harlot's Progress, Vol. 2: Splendeurs Et Miseres Des Courtisanes As has been noted in the Introduction to the first volume of the "Splendeurs et Miseres des Courtisanes," "La der-ni re Incarnation de Vautrin," though forming, according to the author's conception, an integral part of that work, stands in more ways than one aloof from it. It was much later written than the earlier parts, except "Ou menent les mauvais Chemins," and it was later written even than that. Moreover, it marks in two different ways a much maturer stage of the author's ideas as to heroic convicts - a stage in which, I think, it is not fanciful to detect a considerable reduction of the gigantesque element and a substitution of something else for it. We may note this in two ways. In the earlier conception of the matter, as exemplified chiefly in "Ferragus" and "La Pere Goriot," the heroic element considerably dominates the practical. In the one Balzac had shown an ex-convict defying society and executing a sort of private justice or injustice, just as he pleased. In the other he had adopted (and had maintained still later in an apologetic epistle to a newspaper editor, which will be found in his works) a notion of the criminal as of a sort of puissance du mal pervading and dominating society itself. In the present book, or section of a book, which, it must never be forgotten, was one of his very latest, things are adjusted to a much more actual level. The thieves'-latin which it contains is only an indirect symptom of this. Ainsworth in England and others in France had anticipated him notably in this. But indirectly it shows us that he had come down many stages from his earlier heights. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Henry Chips Channon The Diaries Volume 2

Download or read book Henry Chips Channon The Diaries Volume 2 written by Chips Channon and published by Random House. This book was released on 2021-09-09 with total page 1081 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The second volume of the remarkable, Sunday Times bestselling diaries of Chips Channon. This second volume of the bestselling diaries of Henry 'Chips' Channon takes us from the heady aftermath of the Munich agreement, when the Prime Minister so admired by Chips was credited with having averted a general European conflagration, through the rapid unravelling of appeasement, and on to the tribulations of the early years of the Second World War. It closes with a moment of hope, as Channon, in recording the fall of Mussolini in July 1943, reflects: 'The war must be more than half over.' For much of this period, Channon is genuinely an eye-witness to unfolding events. He reassures Neville Chamberlain as he fights for his political life in May 1940. He chats to Winston Churchill while the two men inspect the bombed-out chamber of the House of Commons a few months later. From his desk at the Foreign Office he charts the progress of the war. But with the departure of his boss 'Rab' Butler to the Ministry of Education, and Channon's subsequent exclusion from the corridors of power, his life changes - and with it the preoccupations and tone of the diaries. The conduct of the war remains a constant theme, but more personal preoccupations come increasingly to the fore. As he throws himself back into the pleasures of society, he records his encounters with the likes of Noël Coward, Prince Philip, General de Gaulle and Oscar Wilde's erstwhile lover Lord Alfred Douglas. He describes dinners with members of European royal dynasties, and recounts gossip and scandal about the great, the good and the less good. And he charts the implosion of his marriage and his burgeoning, passionate friendship with a young officer on Wavell's staff. These are diaries that bring a whole epoch vividly to life.

Book Henry Fielding Plays Volume II 1731 1734

Download or read book Henry Fielding Plays Volume II 1731 1734 written by Thomas Lockwood and published by Clarendon Press. This book was released on 2007-10-11 with total page 888 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the second of three volumes representing the only modern edition of Fielding's dramatic works. Most of these plays have not appeared in print for a century, and never previously in fully-edited form. Fielding is best known as a classic novelist and the author of Tom Jones, but like his great model Cervantes, he came to novel-writing from an important first career in professional theatre. He wrote twenty-eight plays, including comedies, satiric extravaganzas, and ballad operas. He was the leading playwright of his generation, an experimentalist and entrepreneur of dramatic form who sometimes also brought contemporary politics and public figures onto his stage with results even more dramatic off-stage. This volume presents nine plays from one of the most productive and successful periods of Fielding's theatre career. One of them, The Grub-Street Opera, is a ballad opera cheerfully mocking various public characters including the Prime Minister, Prince of Wales, and even King and Queen. Another, The Modern Husband, is a dark comedy attacking the cynical merchandising of sex, marriage, and influence among what passes for polite society in 1730s London. Most of the plays in this volume were major hits with long stage lives in repertory, including The Lottery, The Intriguing Chambermaid, and two of the great Molière adaptations of the century, The Mock Doctor and The Miser. Fielding wrote all four of those plays as star vehicles for the great Drury Lane musical actress Catherine Clive. The plays are given in critical unmodernized texts based on careful collation of the original editions, with explanatory notes and commentary on sources, stage history, and critical reception. All music is included, with appendices giving complete accounts of textual variation and bibliographic history for each play.

Book A Cultural History of the Modern Age Vol 2

Download or read book A Cultural History of the Modern Age Vol 2 written by Egon Friedell and published by Transaction Publishers. This book was released on with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the second volume of Friedell's monumental A Cultural History of the Modern Age. A key figure in the flowering of Viennese culture between the two world wars, this three volume work is considered his masterpiece. The centuries covered in this second volume mark the victory of the scientifi c mind: in nature-research, language-research, politics, economics, war, even morality, poetry, and religion. All systems of thought produced in this century, either begin with the scientifi c outlook as their foundation or regard it as their highest and fi nal goal. Friedell claims three main streams pervade the eighteenth century: Enlightenment, Revolution, and Classicism. In ordinary use, by "Enlightenment" we mean an extreme rationalistic tendency of which preliminary stages were noted in the seventeenth century. Th e term "Classicism", is well understood. Under the term "Revolution" Friedell includes all movements directed against what has been dominant and traditional. Th e aims of such movements were remodeling the state and society, banning all esthetic canons, and dethronement of reason by sentiment, all in the name of the "Return to Nature." Th e Enlightenment tendency might be seen as laying the ground for an age of revolution. Th is second volume continues Friedell's dramatic history of the driving forces of the twentieth century.

Book Beyond Media Borders Volume 2

Download or read book Beyond Media Borders Volume 2 written by Lars Elleström and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-10-13 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book promotes the idea that all media types are multimodal and that comparing media types, through an intermedial lens, necessarily involves analysing these multimodal traits. The collection includes a series of interconnected articles that illustrate and clarify how the concepts developed in Elleström’s influential article The Modalities of Media: A Model for Understanding Intermedial Relations (Palgrave Macmillan, 2010) can be used for methodical investigation and interpretation of media traits and media interrelations. The authors work with a wide range of old and new media types that are traditionally investigated through limited, media-specific concepts. The publication is a significant contribution to interdisciplinary research, advancing the frontiers of conceptual as well as practical understanding of media interrelations. This is the second of two volumes. It contains a concluding article by Elleström and seven contributions concentrated on the issue of media transformations: how media characteristics are transferred and transfigured among various media products and media types.
