Book Human Chromosomes

    Book Details:
  • Author : Eeva Therman
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2012-12-06
  • ISBN : 1468405292
  • Pages : 392 pages

Download or read book Human Chromosomes written by Eeva Therman and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, like the two previous editions, was written as an introduction to human cytogenetics, but it could also be used as a text for a general cytogenetics course, since chromosome structure and behavior are similar in all eukaryotes. Many examples in this book are from organisms other than humans, reflecting our combined backgrounds of molecular and bacterial genetics, and plant and animal cytogenetics. In the rapidly expanding field of human cytogenetics, certain subjects, for instance clinical and cancer cytogenetics, are now covered in recently published, thousand-page volumes. In this book, such subjects are presented only in outline. The enormous growth of information has also made the choice of topics and of examples to illustrate them even more arbitrary and subjective than in the previous editions. Apart from a few pages here and there, the text has been rewritten. Major parts, especially those on molecular matters, have been added. This book would not exist without the dedicated participation of Mrs. Barbara Susman. She has been involved in the project from the planning stages to the final proofreading. She has done the extensive literature research, designed most of the tables and illustrations, and edited and typed the text. For discussions and suggestions we are indebted to many colleagues. We wish especially to mention Drs. Lassi Alvesalo, Evelyn M. Kuhn, and Renata Laxova, who have critically read selected parts of the book, and Dr. Carter Denniston, who has read the whole text.

Book Mapping and Sequencing the Human Genome

Download or read book Mapping and Sequencing the Human Genome written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1988-01-01 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is growing enthusiasm in the scientific community about the prospect of mapping and sequencing the human genome, a monumental project that will have far-reaching consequences for medicine, biology, technology, and other fields. But how will such an effort be organized and funded? How will we develop the new technologies that are needed? What new legal, social, and ethical questions will be raised? Mapping and Sequencing the Human Genome is a blueprint for this proposed project. The authors offer a highly readable explanation of the technical aspects of genetic mapping and sequencing, and they recommend specific interim and long-range research goals, organizational strategies, and funding levels. They also outline some of the legal and social questions that might arise and urge their early consideration by policymakers.

Book The Search for Human Chromosomes

Download or read book The Search for Human Chromosomes written by Wilson John Wall and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-12-11 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a broadly historical account of a remarkable and very exciting scientific story–the search for the number of human chromosomes. It covers the processes and people, culminating in the realization that discovering the number of human chromosomes brought as much benefit as unraveling the genetic code itself. With the exception of red blood cells, which have no nucleus and therefore no DNA, and sex cells, humans have 46 chromosomes in every single cell. Not only do chromosomes carry all of the genes that code our inheritance, they also carry them in a specific order. It is essential that the number and structure of chromosomes remains intact, in order to pass on the correct amount of DNA to succeeding generations and for the cells to survive. Knowing the number of human chromosomes has provided a vital diagnostic tool in the prenatal diagnosis of genetic disorders, and the search for this number and developing an understanding of what it means are the focus of this book.

Book Human Chromosome Methodology

Download or read book Human Chromosome Methodology written by Jorge J. Yunis and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Human Chromosome Methodology fills the need for an authoritative and up-to-date treatise which would serve as a text and reference for advances in human cytogenetics. The book includes readily comprehensible chapters that cover each phase of laboratory investigation from the preparation of materials for sex chromatin and chromosome techniques for bone marrow, blood, skin, and gonadal specimens to the subject of autoradiography and chromosome identification. Included also are guides to microscopy and photomicrography as well as an up-to-date treatment of chromosomes in disease. It is hoped that this volume will serve as an adequate guide to laboratory techniques and their applications for research workers, students of genetics, and members of the medical profession involved in setting up a laboratory of cytogenetics.

Book Plant Chromosomes

    Book Details:
  • Author : Archarna Sharma
  • Publisher : CRC Press
  • Release : 2019-06-18
  • ISBN : 1351424130
  • Pages : 408 pages

Download or read book Plant Chromosomes written by Archarna Sharma and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2019-06-18 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The past two decades have brought with them remarkable progress in plant chromosomal research. The chromosome structure has been clarified in great detail, enabling identification of gene sequences at the microscopic level, which has aided the analysis of biodiversity. Knowledge of chromosome structure has played a crucial role in the improvement of crop species and has far-reaching implications. The manipulation and engineering of chromosomes involves a panoply of novel methods, combining conventional and modern techniques of biotechnology. A working knowledge of such techniques is essential for today's students and researchers, and the plant system, because of totipotency, requires special treatment. This treatise covers all the latest methods involved in the study of evolution, biodiversity, chromosome manipulation and engineering.

Download or read book Chromosome Techniques written by Arun Sharma and published by Butterworth-Heinemann. This book was released on 2014-04-24 with total page 724 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chromosome Techniques: Theory and Practice, Third Edition focuses on chromosome research. The book first discusses pre-treatment and hypotonic treatment. Pre-treatment for clearing the cytoplasm and softening the tissues; separation of chromosomes and clarification of constrictions; and hypotonic treatment for chromosome spread are described. The text also explains fixation and processing, including fixing of fluids and mixtures and air-drying techniques for chromosome study. The selection also discusses methods for special materials. Study of division in embryosac mother cells; study of chromosomes from thallophytes; salivary gland, lamp brush, and pachytene chromosomes; spiral structure; and secondary constriction are explained. The text also discusses microscopy, including ordinary light microscopy, high resolution autoradiography, and light microscope autoradiography. The book discusses study of plant chromosomes from tissue culture; chromosome analysis following short- and long-term cultures in animals, including man; and chromosome analysis from malignant tissues. The text takes a look at the banding patterns of chromosomes, including banding pattern techniques, C-banding, and representative schedules for comparative study of different banding patterns. The book further describes somatic cell fusion and the chemical nature of chromosomes, proteins, and enzymes. The text is a vital source of information for readers wanting to conduct research on chromosomes.
