Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Technics of the Hand Camera Whilst fully accepting What will no doubt be the general opinion of the book, there are certain considerations which seem to suggest that it may not be altogether useless. To many persons the hand camera is far from being a toy; it becomes at times quite as much a professional instrument as, for example, an engineer's theodolite; whilst the remarkable skill and ingenuity shown in the construction of the various appliances that constitute a high-class camera, make it all the more worthy of being treated in a somewhat technical manner. Book The Hand Camera Manual

Download or read book The Hand Camera Manual written by Walter D. Welford and published by . This book was released on 2016-06-26 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Hand Camera Manual: A Beginner's Guide to Photography in Its Connection With the Hand Camera Hand-camera work has now become not only so fascinating a pursuit, but so useful a hobby, as to need special attention and study, apart from other branches of photography. In this direction the difficulty hitherto has lain in the fact that works devoted to photography only partially applied to the Hand Camera. Even then too, the application could only be made by one already fully conversant with, at all events, the general outline of the art or science. Is is the purpose of this manual to supply the missing link, to provide an elementary handbook to photography in its direct connection with the use of the hand-camera. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Photography of Moving Objects and Hand-Camera Work for Advanced Workers Not a little difficulty has been experienced in the selection of a title for this little work. 'instantaneous' Photog raphy includes a word which suggests to me nothing more than a convenient makeshift invariably to be employed with inverted commas; focal-plane Photography would alienate the sympathies of all who do not possess such a shutter; whilst to name my book The Photography Of Rapidly Moving Objects or high-speed Photography would involve me in a more or less plausible argument when motion ceases to be slow and becomes rapid. Book The Complete Photographer Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Complete Photographer Classic Reprint written by R. Child Bayley and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-21 with total page 562 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Complete Photographer Nobody who has once come under the spell of the camera, and has so far penetrated into the mysteries of photography as to be able to expose with a reasonably quiet mind as to the ultimate nature of his negatives, can never there-after free himself completely from its fascination. I have been under the spell for nearly thirty years, but my camera is as good a companion as ever, and photography is as entertaining in 1914 as in 1885. And incalculably easier also. The great reduction in its difficulties and complications has made the camera vastly more popular; but at the same time it has had the curious and unforeseen result that, comparatively speaking, there are fewer amateurs to whom its use is their chief hobby. Formerly success was only to be attained by concentrating ones whole attention on the processes employed, and photography was the pursuit of a few enthusiasts. To-day, while almost every one photographs, there has not been so vast an increase in the number of enthusiasts, although the increase has been a large one. Many have been led by its facility to make it up casually, and have found that even in that way it will furnish a great deal of pleasure and of attractive and useful occupation. Some of these are led further and further in its pursuit. They find that in spite of hand-cameras, mechanical development, and gaslight papers, there is still plenty of scope for the exercise of personal skill; there are plenty of difficulties to confront and triumphs to achieve, and that as a pastime an inexhaustible field opens out before them as they proceed. To such a field the later chapters of this book may serve as an introduction. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual of Photography The hand camera and roll holder are especially valuable in rapid reconnois sance work when used in conjunction with the bioy cle, and results may be Obtained more rapidly than by a mounted reconnoissance using the cavalry sketching board. For hasty work in the field, the photographer needs but little in the shape of impedimenta. A hand camera, preferably 5 by 7 with Russia leather bellows, double plate holders, or a roll holder, a rapid rectilineal lens, pneumatic shutter, folding tripod, and rubber focusing cloth, in which the camera may be inclosed for protection against the weather, will prove a com pact and light kit for any field work. The cut films now manufactured possess a great advantage over glass, owing to their lightness, portability, and absence from liability to breakage. Book The Photographic Primer

Download or read book The Photographic Primer written by J. C. Worthington and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Photographic Primer: A Manual of Practice This little manual, which now seeks audience, is not the mouthpiece of a manufacturer, neither have the authors a private axe to grind. It is written to give a clear, simple definition of photographic practice in its primary form, as the uninitiated must approach it. The Primer can lay no claim on the professional operator, and goes no further in the path of photographic work than the production of a perfect picture by the simplest processes. For those who wish to experiment with the endless procession of new plates, new papers, and new methods, there is abundant help ready to hand in the photographic literature of the past ten years; but to one who knows nothing of the art, who has never looked into the mysterious simplicity of a camera box, and to whom a lens is but a bit of glass, the Primer may appeal with confidence. The authors have sought to give the cardinal points in photographic work in epitomic form, and in this respect the manual may be found not only a guide to the beginner, but a reference book of constant use to the more advanced student. Book The Future Is in Your Hands

Download or read book The Future Is in Your Hands written by BethBuggenhagen and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2023-11-07 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Senegal, portraiture serves as a vital index and creator of social connection. People sit for and display portraits, keep albums, and view illustrated magazines together. Through these portraiture practices, Senegalese have fashioned idealized images to mend fraught and fragmented lives in the context of decades of migration. The Future Is in Your Hands provides an expansive frame for photography to highlight the role of affect in portraiture practices. Moving from the colonial to the newly independent Senegal, Beth Buggenhagen combines museum, ethnographic, and archival research on photography's past with lens-based artists who address themes of separation, visibility, rupture, and repatriation through portraiture. Buggenhagen, in collaboration with Senegalese photographers, explores how photographs, as visual and material objects, migrate themselves and, like the bodies they represent, create a record not only of lived experiences but also of the cycle of migration for this labor-exporting country. By complicating the history of portraiture in Senegal, The Future Is in Your Hands reveals the enduring power of images and the efforts under way to keep this art form safely in Senegalese hands.
