Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Hamilton Manuscripts: Containing Some Account of the Settlement of the Territories of the Upper Clandeboye, Great Ardes, and Dufferin, in the County of Down MY dear Lo wry - The enclosed Manuscripts contain several historical anecdotes respecting my family from the period of their settling in this country 5 together with some memorials Of my own life, down to my return from America, when I retired from public life, which were drawn up by me during my leisure moments for the entertainment of my family and friends, with no intention of publication at the time, as you are already aware but as I find that several writers have, per haps unintentionally, mistaken some facts which are fully explained in them, and drawn therefrom unfavourable conclusions, I think it would not be doing myself justice to withhold them altogether from the public. I have, therefore, been induced to request you to accept them, and undertake the publication of them at some future time, which I leave entirely to yourself, illustrating them with any observations you may think are necessary, which, I have no doubt, from my knowledge of your character, will be done impartially and fairly as I could wish, and I know you would not. Book Making Ireland English

    Book Details:
  • Author : Jane Ohlmeyer
  • Publisher : Yale University Press
  • Release : 2012-06-26
  • ISBN : 030017750X
  • Pages : 708 pages

Download or read book Making Ireland English written by Jane Ohlmeyer and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2012-06-26 with total page 708 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This groundbreaking book provides the first comprehensive study of the remaking of Ireland's aristocracy during the seventeenth century. It is a study of the Irish peerage and its role in the establishment of English control over Ireland. Jane Ohlmeyer's research in the archives of the era yields a major new understanding of early Irish and British elite, and it offers fresh perspectives on the experiences of the Irish, English, and Scottish lords in wider British and continental contexts. The book examines the resident peerage as an aggregate of 91 families, not simply 311 individuals, and demonstrates how a reconstituted peerage of mixed faith and ethnicity assimilated the established Catholic aristocracy. Tracking the impact of colonization, civil war, and other significant factors on the fortunes of the peerage in Ireland, Ohlmeyer arrives at a fresh assessment of the key accomplishment of the new Irish elite: making Ireland English.

Book Dynastic Identity in Early Modern Europe

Download or read book Dynastic Identity in Early Modern Europe written by Liesbeth Geevers and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-29 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aristocratic dynasties have long been regarded as fundamental to the development of early modern society and government. Yet recent work by political historians has increasingly questioned the dominant role of ruling families in state formation, underlining instead the continued importance and independence of individuals. In order to take a fresh look at the subject, this volume provides a broad discussion on the formation of dynastic identities in relationship to the lineage’s own history, other families within the social elite, and the ruling dynasty. Individual chapters consider the dynastic identity of a wide range of European aristocratic families including the CroÃs, Arenbergs and Nassaus from the Netherlands; the Guises-Lorraine of France; the Sandoval-Lerma in Spain; the Farnese in Italy; together with other lineages from Ireland, Sweden and the Austrian Habsburg monarchy. Tied in with this broad international focus, the volume addressed a variety of related themes, including the expression of ambitions and aspirations through family history; the social and cultural means employed to enhance status; the legal, religious and political attitude toward sovereigns; the role of women in the formation and reproduction of (composite) dynastic identities; and the transition of aristocratic dynasties to royal dynasties. In so doing the collection provides a platform for looking again at dynastic identity in early modern Europe, and reveals how it was a compound of political, religious, social, cultural, historical and individual attitudes.
