Book The Hall Street Shoot Out

Download or read book The Hall Street Shoot Out written by Captain E.R. Walt and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2010-11-12 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On a pleasant Monday evening in September of 1969, twenty-six year-old Johnny Lee Thomas excused himself from his familys dinner table, picked up a pump shotgun and announced that he was going huntingalone. Seconds later he stepped out of his house and shot sixteen-year-old Aljewel Wesley in the face as she sat on her own front porch listening to records with her boyfriend and grandmother. That was but the first shot in what would shortly become the biggest gunbattle in the 130 year history of the Dallas Police Department. Johnny Thomas continued to shoot at neighbors, friends, family members and passing motorists until the police arrived, at which point he ambushed and shot the first three officers on the scene. He then retreated to his house and held off an assault by a hundred or more determined police officers in a furious firefight that lasted more than an hour and involved hundreds if not thousands of rounds fired. Before the incident ended, ten persons would be shot, including four police officers and a TV cameraman; two would be killed, including the shooter himself. Authored by a participant and based upon official police documents, original newspaper articles and personal interviews with forty six of the hundred or so officers present, the book details the gunbattle from the first shot to the final barrage of gunfire that ended the shooters life and brought it to a close. It includes a listing of sixty-seven Dallas officers known to have been combatants or otherwise involved in the incident and details their location and participation as far as it is known. Also included is an analysis of the factors that contributed to the spectacular nature of the incident from departmental policies, procedures, equipment and tactics to the culture and tenor of the times. Chapters are also dedicated to the firearms used in the battle and an analysis of exactly who, among the many officers involved, was responsible for putting an end to Thomass rampagesomething that was never addressed in the original investigation. The concluding chapters cover the aftermath of the gunbattle from the neighborhood riots and arson fires to the truncated investigation and include a brief history of the Dallas Police Departments Tactical Division and the fundamental changes in the operation of that unit that were brought about by the affair on Hall Street. The book closes with an epilogue bringing the reader up to date on the major players in the drama.

Download or read book D C Shootout on K Street written by Evan Keliher and published by Evan Keliher. This book was released on 2012-06 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: D.C. Shootout On K Street is a political satire loaded with lots of sophisticated humor and even wit. It's hoped that you'll be both entertained and informed at the same time. Imagine that the gods were distracted one day and they accidentally made you the president of the United States. You wake up in the Oval Office and people are amazed. Everybody demands that you resign at once and let an experienced politician be president because you don't know how to run the country. What would you do? Could you stand up to the evil bastards and tell them to go to hell? They'd work overtime to get your ass out of the White House. You'd be called a racist, an idiot, a crook, a sex fiend, a liar. They'd slander your family, try to impeach your ass, swear you were born in Kenya, hire assassins to shoot you, enlist those Swift Boat assholes to lie about your military record, claim your college transcripts were forged, and kidnap your kid as hostages. Or are there some laws you'd like to see passed? Maybe better Social Security benefits, lower interest on student loans, Medicare for all, more taxes on the rich and fewer on the poor, no more wars, close tax loopholes, rein in Wall Street, free Jose Padilla, raise duties on China, restore our infrastructure, open more factories, etc. If you like the nook please tell others; maybe we can round up enough people for a minor rebellion and make some real changes that actually help average American s instead of the 1%ers.

Book Eats Shoots Leaves

Download or read book Eats Shoots Leaves written by Lynne Truss and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2004-04-12 with total page 133 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We all know the basics of punctuation. Or do we? A look at most neighborhood signage tells a different story. Through sloppy usage and low standards on the internet, in email, and now text messages, we have made proper punctuation an endangered species. In Eats, Shoots & Leaves, former editor Lynne Truss dares to say, in her delightfully urbane, witty, and very English way, that it is time to look at our commas and semicolons and see them as the wonderful and necessary things they are. This is a book for people who love punctuation and get upset when it is mishandled. From the invention of the question mark in the time of Charlemagne to George Orwell shunning the semicolon, this lively history makes a powerful case for the preservation of a system of printing conventions that is much too subtle to be mucked about with.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Once upon a time Eddie played concert piano to reverent audiences at Carnegie Hall. Now he bangs out honky-tonk for drunks in a dive in Philadelphia. But then two people walk into Eddie's life--the first promising Eddie a future, the other dragging him back into a treacherous past. Shoot the Piano Player is a bittersweet and nerve-racking exploration of different kinds of loyalty: the kind a man owes his family, no matter how bad that family is; the kind a man owes a woman; and, ultimately, the loyalty he owes himself. The result is a moody thriller that, like the best hard-boiled fiction, carries a moral depth charge.

Book Shoot the Widow

Download or read book Shoot the Widow written by Meryle Secrest and published by Knopf. This book was released on 2011-06-08 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first rule of biography, wrote Justin Kaplan: “Shoot the widow.” In her new book, Meryle Secrest, acclaimed biographer (“Knowing, sympathetic and entertainingly droll”—The New York Times), writes about her comic triumphs and misadventures as a biographer in search of her nine celebrated subjects, about how the hunt for a “life” is like working one’s way through a maze, full of fall starts, dead ends, and occasional clear passages leading to the next part of the puzzle. She writes about her first book, a life of Romaine Brooks, and how she was led to Nice and given invaluable letters by her subject’s heir that were slid across the table, one at a time; how she was led to the villa of Brooks’ lover, Gabriele d’Annunzio (poet, playwright, and aviator), a fantastic mausoleum left untouched since the moment of his death seventy years before; to a small English village, where she uncovered a lost Romaine Brooks painting; and finally, to 20, rue Jacob, Paris, where Romaine’s lover, Natalie Barney, had fifty years before entertained Cocteau, Gide, Proust, Colette, and others. Secrest describes how her next book—a life of Berenson—prompted Francis Steegmuller, fellow biographer, to comment that he wouldn’t touch the subject with a ten-foot pole. For her life of British art historian Kenneth Clark, Secrest was given permission to write the book by her subject, who surreptitiously financed it in the hopes of controlling its contents; we see how Clark’s plan was foiled by a jealous mistress and a stash of love letters that helped Secrest navigate Clark’s obstacle course. Among the other biographical (mis)adventures, Secrest reveals: how she tracked Salvador Dalí to a hospital room, found him recovering from serious burns sustained in a mysterious fire, and learned that he was knee-deep in a scandal involving fake drawings and prints and surrounded by dangerous characters out of Murder, Inc. . . . and how she went in search of a subject’s grave (Frank Lloyd Wright’s) only to find that his body had been dug up to satisfy the whim of his last wife. A fascinating account of a life spent in sometimes arduous, sometimes comical, always exciting pursuit of the truth about other lives.
