Book Hair Style Directory

Download or read book Hair Style Directory written by Christina Butcher and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From elaborate “up-dos” to casual braids, inspirational hairstyles continue to populate fashion blogs, Pinterest boards, and style magazines everywhere. However, this popularity belies a gaping lack of consolidated and authoritative advice on the techniques required to create these styles, and so the Hair Style Directory presents a comprehensive resource that identifies the unique characteristics, limitations, and practical techniques to create over 80 hairstyles. Covering classic as well as modern hairstyles and everything from a simple wrapped ponytail to a complex fishtail chignon, this book offers useful facts, invaluable advice, and a wealth of contemporary visual inspiration to help readers understand the challenges and possibilities that each hairstyle offers. The Hair Style Directory is aimed at the many people out there who love to experiment with their hair and are either on the look-out for new styles or wish to find inspiration to play with and embellish styles they already know and love. Directory entries enable the reader to choose what style is most appropriate for the occasion, their available time, hair length, and hair type, also indicating how time consuming or difficult the style is to put together. The accompanying step-by-step tutorials then give the reader the instructions they need to replicate that style. Finally, a reference section at the end of the book offers resourceful information on useful tools and equipment as well as courses and further education for those who would like to take hairstyling to a more professional level.

Book A Cultural History of Hair in the Modern Age

Download or read book A Cultural History of Hair in the Modern Age written by Geraldine Biddle-Perry and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2020-12-10 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the last century, there has been a revolution in self-presentation and social attitudes towards hair. Developments in mass manufacturing, advances in chemical science and new understandings of bodies and minds have been embraced by new kinds of hairdressers and their clientele and embodied in styles that reflect shifting ideals of what it is to be and to look modern. The emergence of the ladies hairdressing salon, the rise of the celebrity stylist, the impact of Hollywood, an expanding mass media, and a new synergy between fashions in clothing and hairstyles have rippled out globally. Fashions in hair styles and their representation have taken on new meanings as a way of resisting dominant social structures, experimenting with social taboos, and expressing a modern sense of self. From the 1920s bob to the punk cut, hair has continued to be deeply involved in society's larger issues. Drawing on a wealth of visual, textual and object sources, and illustrated with 75 images, A Cultural History of Hair in the Modern Age presents essays that explore how politics, science, religion, fashion, beauty, the visual arts, and popular culture have reshaped modern hair and its significance as an agent of social change.

Download or read book Images on the Page written by Sanda Miller and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2021-08-26 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fashion imagery has existed for hundreds of years and yet the methods used by scholars to understand it have remained mostly historical and descriptive. The belief informing these approaches may be that fashion imagery is designed for one purpose: to depict a garment and how to wear it. In this interdisciplinary book, Sanda Miller suggests a radical alternative to these well-practiced approaches, proposing that fashion imagery has stories to tell and meanings to uncover. The methodology she has developed is an iconography of fashion imagery, based on the same theory which has been key to the History of Art for centuries. Applying Panofsky's theory of iconography to illustrations from books, magazines and fashion plates, as well as fashion photography and even live fashion events, Miller uncovers three levels of meaning: descriptive, secondary (or conventional) and tertiary or 'symbolic'. In doing so, she answers questions such as who is the model; what did people wear and why; and how did people live? She proves that fashion imagery, far from being purely descriptive, is ripe with meaning and can be used to shed light on society, class, culture and the history of dress.

Download or read book Encyclopedia of Hair written by Victoria Sherrow and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2023-03-30 with total page 634 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This popular volume on the culture of hair through human history and around the globe has been updated and revised to include even more entries and current information. How we style our hair has the ability to shape the way others perceive us. For example, in 2017, the singer Macklemore denounced his hipster undercut hairstyle, a style that is associated with Hitler Youth and alt-right men, and in 2015, actress Rose McGowan shaved her head in order to take a stance against the traditional Hollywood sex symbol stereotype. This volume examines how hair-or lack thereof-can be an important symbol of gender, class, and culture around the world and through history. Hairstyles have come to represent cultural heritage and memory, and even political leanings, social beliefs, and identity. This second edition builds upon the original volume, updating all entries that have evolved over the last decade, such as by discussing hipster culture in the entries on beards and mustaches and recent medical breakthroughs in hair loss. New entries have been added that look at specific world regions, hair coverings, political symbolism behind certain styles, and other topics.
