Even during his own time, he had a cult following. His many books, The Old Man and the Sea, A Farewell to Arms, For Whom the Bell Tolls, and The Snows of Kilimanjaro remain well-loved classics to this day. In 1954 Hemmingway won the Nobel Prize for literature in recognition of his talent. “Papa” Hemingway possessed a bright personality and traveled incessantly. He handwrote his manuscripts in pencil and on a “good” day he could write seven pencils down to their nubs while standing in one place; moving only to shift his body weight from one foot to the other. A tragic figure, he suffered from numerous maladies and injuries throughout his life: anthrax, malaria, amoebic dysentery, pneumonia, skin cancer, hepatitis, and diabetes amongst them. Additionally, he experienced ruptured internal organs (kidneys, spleen, and liver), a cracked vertebra, and a fractured skull. His passions were three: literature, alcohol, and fishing. Among his favorite books, Hemingway listed Flaber’s Madam Bovary, Stendhal’s The Red and the Black, Joyce’s Dubliners, Tolstoy’s Anna Karenina, and Dostoyevsky’s The Brothers Karamazov as must-reads for all. Van Dyke, and other elite men began describing their big-game hunting as “manly sport with the rifle.” They also began writing about their experiences, publishing hundreds of narratives of hunting and adventure in the popular press (and creating a new literary genre in the process). But why did so many of these big-game hunters publish? What was writing actually doing for them, and what did it do for readers? In exploring these questions, The Hunter Elite reveals new connections among hunting narratives, publishing, and the American conservation movement. Beginning in the 1880s these prolific hunter-writers told readers that big-game hunting was a test of self-restraint and “manly virtues,” and that it was not about violence. They also opposed their sportsmanlike hunting to the slaughtering of game by British imperialists, even as they hunted across North America and throughout the British Empire. Their references to Americanism and manliness appealed to traditional values, but they used very modern publishing technologies to sell their stories, and by 1900 they were reaching hundreds of thousands of readers every month. When hunter-writers took up conservation as a cause, they used that reach to rally popular support for the national parks and for legislation that restricted hunting in the US, Canada, and Newfoundland. The Hunter Elite is the first book to explore both the international nature of American hunting during this period and the essential contributions of hunting narratives and the publishing industry to the North American conservation movement.

In addition, there were problems of tribalism, close calls from fearsome beasts, including lions, leopards, elephants, rhinos, crocs, and dangerous men. Piet van Brakel explored the lower half of the African continent while still a fugitive from the dangerous Dutch VOC. To succeed, he had to control the vicissitudes of weather—floods, droughts, winds, starvation, and great thirsts. He was the baas, the bwana who had to deal with all unseen and unknown surprises. That included: animal attacks, Arab slaver/killer invasion, war with ruthless Zulu impis, poisons, malfunctioning guns, and misbehaving men of his safari team. He lost six of his nine lives, accumulated hard-won treasure twice, and gained incomparable friends and success beyond measure. Such a life was never a sure thing for the man. How he accomplished, that is the stuff of legend.
