This book was released on with total page 960 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Book on Gujjars & Gujari Language, Gujri Language , Gojari Language, Gojri Language The Gujjars - Dr. Javaid Rahi-Volume 03 Gojri belongs to the central group of the Indo Aryan subfamily of Indo-European languages. Gojri (or Gojri) is spoken by the Gurjars (or Gujjars), traditionally nomadic pastoralists, who are scattered widely throughout the northern Subcontinent. While remaining an “oral society” in the classic sense, Gujjars in recent decades have begun attending school, organizing politically, and writing poetry and prose in their own language. Today, in part because of government sponsorship, the level of Gojri broadcasting and literary activity is higher than that for other minority languages in the region. To date, however, Gojri lacks an agreed-upon set of writing conventions. Writers and editors tend to write phonetically, and with wildly varying degrees of reference to the conventions of Urdu, the primary language of wider communication and the language of education in most communities.

Book Poor and Pregnant in New Delhi India

Download or read book Poor and Pregnant in New Delhi India written by Helen Vallianatos and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-12 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this innovative contribution to the study of food, gender, and power, Helen Vallianatos meticulously documents cultural values and beliefs, dietary practaices, and the nutritional and health status of mothers in Indian squatter settlements. She explores both large-scale forces—incorporating critical medical anthropology and feminist theory into a biocultural paradigm—and the local and individual choices New Delhi women make in interpreting cultural dietary norms based on their reproductive histories, socioeconomic status, family structure, and other specific conditions. Her findings have significant implications for nutritional and medical anthropology and development studies, and her innovative research design serves as a model for multi-method studies that use participatory research principles, combine quantitative and qualitative investigations, and interpret diverse types of data.

Book The Gujar Settlements

Download or read book The Gujar Settlements written by Darshan Singh Manku and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No Geogrpaher of India had earlier investigated the different Settlement landscapes created by caste or tribla caste groups. In this biik, Dr. Darshan Singh Manku presents his excelleent research work based on extensive field work and authentic documents on the four representative villages of Gujar Settlements from four ecological nices of the Punjab Kandi, Changar, Beas Kandi and Ghar. The author has effectively traced the orginand migration history of the Gujars and has analysed their Settlements within the context of a tri0partion framwork-culture, econlogy and history-and efectively shown hos the interaction of these three elements had led to the establishment of a Gujar cultural ladscape in the semi-hill region of Punjab. The author's origina contribution is th discovery that the key to the unraveling of historical evolution of the Settlement is held by the concept of clan ( gotra) while that of the field pattern is held by clan in combination with ecology-a concept not hitherto demonstrated by geographers, anthropologists and sociologists. Throughout the book, each and every discussion is in-formed deeply and consistently by a pervading consciousness of history and the interplay of cultural-historical and cultural-ecological factors identified and expressed through simple heuristic models, sketches and photographs.

Book International Encyclopedia of Linguistics

Download or read book International Encyclopedia of Linguistics written by William J. Frawley and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2003-05-01 with total page 2218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The International Encyclopedia of Linguistics, 2nd Edition encompasses the full range of the contemporary field of linguistics, including historical, comparative, formal, mathematical, functional, and philosophical linguistics with special attention given to interrelations within branches of linguistics and to relations of linguistics with other disciplines. Areas of intersection with the social and behavioral sciences--ethnolinguistics, sociolinguistics, psycholinguistics, and behavioral linguistics--receive major coverage, along with interdisciplinary work in language and literature, mathematical linguistics, computational linguistics, and applied linguistics. Longer entries in the International Encyclopedia of Linguistics, ranging up to four thousand words, survey the major fields of study--for example, anthropological linguistics, history of linguistics, semantics, and phonetics. Shorter entries treat specific topics within these fields, such as code switching, sound symbolism, and syntactic features. Other short entries define and discuss technical terms used within the various subfields or provide sketches of the careers of important scholars in the history of linguistics, such as Leonard Bloomfield, Roman Jakobson, and Edward Sapir. A major portion of the work is its extensive coverage of languages and language families. From those as familiar as English, Japanese, and the Romance languages to Hittite, Yoruba, and Nahuatl, all corners of the world receive treatment. Languages that are the subject of independent entries are analyzed in terms of their phonology, grammatical features, syntax, and writing systems. Lists attached to each article on a language group or family enumerate all languages, extinct or still spoken, within that group and provide detailed information on the number of known speakers, geographical range, and degree of intelligibility with other languages in the group. In this way, virtually every known language receives coverage. For ease of reference and to aid research, the articles are alphabetically arranged, each signed by the contributor, supported by up-to-date bibliographies, line drawings, maps, tables, and diagrams, and readily accessible via a system of cross-references and a detailed index and synoptic outline. Authoritative, comprehensive, and innovative, the 2nd edition of the International Encyclopedia of Linguistics will be an indispensable addition to personal, public, academic, and research libraries and will introduce a new generation of readers to the complexities and concerns of this field of study.
