Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Guests of Hercules Long shadows of late afternoon lay straight and thin across the garden path; shadows of beech trees that ranged themselves in an undeviating line, like an inner wall Within the convent wall of brick; and the soaring trees were very old, as old perhaps as the convent itself, whose stone had the same soft tints of faded red and brown as the autumn leaves which sparsely jewelled the beeches' silver. Williamson (Authored by) Monte Carlo furnishes a background for this tale whose heroine's first memorable experience outside of the walls of a convent is one of breaking the bank at the casino. Her phenomenal beginner's luck at roulette makes a conspicuous figure of her among the guests at the Hôtel de Paris where she is unattended and unchaperoned. Her experiences, romantic and otherwise, afford the authors material out of which they have constructed a story less tame in point of adventure than their "Golden Silence" but full of vivacity and color. All changes not otherwise ascribed are to be taken as due to S. A query-k implies that the reading of the ms. Is doubtful. Hercules is the Roman equivalent of the Greek divine hero Heracles, son of Jupiter and the mortal Alcmene. In classical mythology, Hercules is famous for his strength and his numerous far-ranging adventures. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Labours of Hercules There was, however, once a time, when men lied, cheated, tyrannized, cut each other's throats, and picked one another's pockets; when one class surfeited and another starved; when Dives in his mansion, arrayed in purple and fine linen, stuffed himself into a monstrosity, and Lazarus in the workhouse, in pauper uniform, and on the coarser kind of food, was famished into a skeleton. To have attained, therefore, to its present state of blessed ness, the world mu'st have undergone a glorious reforma tion. How came this about? Through hercules, who wrought a second series of labours for the express purpose. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Pillars of Hercules and Chaucer s Trophee Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Pillars of Hercules and Chaucer s Trophee Classic Reprint written by George Lyman Kittredge and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-28 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Pillars of Hercules and Chaucer's "Trophee" Manifestly the original misunderstander of the passage in the Epistola did not owe his knowledge of the Eastern Pillars of Hercules to that work, for it does not use the word columnar. He was doubtless already familiar with the passage in the Historia de Preliis (derived from Julius Velerius) in which the columnae are mentioned (see p. 551, above), and, coming upon the same anecdote in a corrupt text of the Epistola (or in a corrupt quotation from it), recognized the identity of the incident, but suppom tropics (or whatever he read instead of it) to be the name of an author. This error he may have made at the time, or, very possibly, years afterward, when he was writing from memory. Or, still more probably, we are concerned with a case of progressive misunderstanding, in which several persons were implicated. Crescit made! Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from To Kiel in the "Hercules" IN the absence of Mr. Lewis R. Freeman, who has returned to America, I am gladly seeing his proofs through the press, and as the grateful task draws to a close, I venture to say a word by way of preface about the genesis of the book. The author, after seeing a good deal of the war on many fronts - in France and Italy and the Balkans - was so fortunate as to be appointed official correspondent to the Grand Fleet early in 1918. The opportunity was exceptional, and he made exceptional use of it. His position in the Fleet was regularised by a commission as Hon. Lieut. Coming into close and friendly contact with naval men of all ranks, the men in the lime light and the men in the shadow, the heroism of dazzling exploits and the nameless em durance of the keepers of the long watch, he came to know intimately the spirit that ruled the Fleet and made it - the Fleet. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hercules Furens: A Tragedy of Seneca IT has, for several years, been a rule in arranging the studies of the Latin depart ment in Harvard College, to introduce specimens of the Roman drama. For this purpose an edition of the Medea of Seneca was some years ago prepared by the under signed, and used by several classes. The edition being exhausted, the question pre sented itself whether it would be better to issue a second edition of the Medea, or select some other tragedy from the collec tion bearing the name of Seneca. Several and sufficiently weighty reasons led to a decision in favor of the latter course, and to-the publication of the Hercules Furens.
