Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Guardsman It was not a pleasant night to be out, rain had fallen during the day, and with the cessation of the storm had come a mist that shrouded the town, blurred the lights, and made the wet air heavy and lifeless. A small group of boys, perhaps a half dozen, ranging in age from twelve to sixteen years, moved quietly up a side street and approached the busi ness quarter of the city. If they had been in mis chief the evidences of it were not visible among them. If they contemplated mischief, only a reader of minds could have discovered that fact. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Adventures of a Guardsman Being myself intended for the Church, my earliest recollection refers to a period when I was placed as a pupil with a very worthy and much respected minister of the Church, the Rev. J. T - s, who kept a public prepara tory school m my native town of Haverford west, in the county of Pembroke, South Wales, vulgarly denominated a free school. Whe ther or not it was a free school, I cannot say; but I am inclined to think, from striking proofs I received at the hands of my respect ed parents for various little acts of truantism, that they had really a greater interest in my attendance than my own personal and parti onlar advancement would sufficiently warrant. Some liked the gossip of the thing, others the jollity; one was pleased with the publicity, another with the punch, and not a few were frightened by the fate of Monsoon. We give you, then, all right and title to our memoirs and reminiscences; you have carte blanche as to style and every other matter of book-making, of which we suppose you understand some thing, and we are convinced we know nothing, - and have only one parting injunction, which is, to treat us as tenderly as the trade will permit. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Jack Hinton: The Guardsman Some disparaging remarks on Ireland and Irishmen in the London press, not very unfrequent at the time, nor altogether obsolete even now, had provoked me at the moment and the sudden thought occurred of a reprisal by showing the many instances in which the Englishman would almost of necessity mistake and misjudge my countrymen, and that out of these blunders and misapprehensions, situations might arise that, if welded into a story, might be made to be amusing. I knew that there was not a class nor a condition in Ireland which had not marked differences from the correlative rank in England; and that not only the Irish squire, the Irish priest, and the Irish peasant, were unlike anything in the larger island, but that the Dublin professional man, the official, and the shopkeeper had traits and distinctions essen tially their own. I had frequently heard Opinions pronounced on Irish habits which I could easily trace to that quizzing habit of my countrymen, who never can deny themselves the enjoyment of playing on the credulity of the traveller - all the more eagerly when they see his note-book taken out to record their shortcomings and absurdities. These thoughts suggested Jack Hinton, and led me to turn from my intention to follow the French arms, or rather to postpone the plan to another opportunity, for it had got too strong hold on me to be utterly abandoned. I have already acknowledged, in a former notice to this story, that I strayed from the path I had determined on, and With very little reference to my original intention, suffered my hero to take his chance among the natives. Indeed, I soon found him too intensely engaged in the cares of self preservation to have much time or taste for criticism on his neighbours. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of the Guard: A Chronicle of the War "That the honorable enterprises, noble adventures, and deeds of arms, performed in the wars between England and France may be properly related, and held in perpetual remembrance - to the end that brave men taking example from them may be encouraged in their well-doing, I sit down to record a history deserving great praise; but, before I begin, I request of the Saviour of the world, who from nothing created all things, that He will have the goodness to inspire me with sense and sound understanding, to persevere in such manner, that all those who shall read may derive pleasure and instruction from my work, and that I may fall into their good graces. "It is said, and with truth, that all towns are built with many different stones, and that all large rivers are formed from many springs; so are sciences compiled by many learned persons, and what one is ignorant of is known to another; not but that everything is known sooner or later." ... - Sir John Froissart's Preface to his Chronicles of England, France, &c. Book Seventy One Years of a Guardsman s Life Classic Reprint

Download or read book Seventy One Years of a Guardsman s Life Classic Reprint written by General Sir George Higginson and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Seventy-One Years of a Guardsman's Life During a winter abroad, after a period of great sorrow, I took advantage of a retentive memory, and aided by a dear and devoted daughter, * gathered together many reminiscences which, reaching back to the "forties," recall customs now obsolete, and bring to life, if but for a moment, notable persons long forgotten by society and even the historian. And further, while in search of other papers after my father's death, I found a box containing all my own letters addressed to my family during the Crimean War, extending over a period of two years and a half. As I had written by every mail the packet was large, and some years ran by before I, already a veteran, reopened the carefully preserved records of my life during that campaign. Many of the letters had been written under trying conditions, and without any attempt at revision or even regard to grammar; and, in short, they were the unstudied outpourings of thought on current events, forecasting recklessly, reflecting with too hasty judgment. Yet I did not find that either our sufferings or the dreary monotony of our daily work revealed despondency, or a desire to relinquish the task set before us. Book excerpt: Excerpt from With the Russian Army Being the Experiences of a National Guardsman I had been so long at an office desk when the war broke over Europe that the idea Of going into it never occurred to me. I had been considered too young for the war of 1898. Parental Objection had stopped my attempting to witness the war between Japan and Russia. I had been compelled to devote myself to business affairs for seven years to the exclusion of all wider interests. It was thus not due to any initia tive of mine, but to the energy of my mother, who planned for me the experiences she had forbidden ten years before, that I received the following invitation.
