The second paper describes the guardhouse at Fort George and its use, based on archaelogical evidence and a comparative study of other guardhouses of the period, since no plans survive.

Download or read book On Common Ground written by Richard D. Merritt and published by Dundurn. This book was released on 2012-06-16 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This tract of land in Niagara-on-the-Lake has witnessed an amazing cavalcade of Canadian history. For 250 years a large tract of oak savannah at the mouth of the Niagara River designated as a Military Reserve has witnessed a rich military and political history: the site of the first parliament of Upper Canada; a battleground during the War of 1812; and annual summer militia camps and the training camp for tens of thousands of men and women during the First and Second World Wars. In the midst of the Reserve stood the symbolic Indian Council House where thousands of Native allies received their annual presents and participated in treaty negotiations. From its inception, this territory was regarded by the local citizenry as common lands, their "Commons." Although portions of the perimeter have been severed for various purposes, including the Shaw Festival Theatre, today this historic place includes three National Historic Sites, playing fields, walking trails, and remnants of first-growth forest in Paradise Grove. On Common Ground chronicles the extraordinary lives and events that have made this place very special indeed.

Book excerpt: What impoverished young knight would duck a chance to win fame along with beautiful lady bringing rich lands with her hand in marriage? Prince George, that’s who. Stung by previous failures, he’d rather stay home in comfort, but finds himself struggling through forests, crossing deserts, and sailing seas to capture the Unicorn, find a fabled flower, and discover an “Unsung Song.” Accompanied by a headsman, a Seeker, and a wild boy, Prince George battles beasts, Northmen, and bandit armies, not to mention witches, Gypsies, and a diabolical dragon-rider. Will the Prince win Dorinda of Darr? And what of his childhood playmate, Princess Julianna? Does she have plans for him too? Possibly. More of the Prince’s tale is continued in The Black Unicorn.
Download or read book Mr Lincoln s Forts written by Benjamin Franklin Cooling and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2009-10-06 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the American Civil War, Washington, D.C. was the most heavily fortified city in North America. As President Abraham Lincoln's Capital, the city became the symbol of Union determination, as well as a target for Robert E. Lee's Confederates. As a Union army and navy logistical base, it contained a complex of hospitals, storehouses, equipment repair facilities, and animal corrals. These were in addition to other public buildings, small urban areas, and vast open space that constituted the capital on the Potomac. To protect Washington with all it contained and symbolized, the Army constructed a shield of fortifications: 68 enclosed earthen forts, 93 supplemental batteries, miles of military roads, and support structures for commissary, quartermaster, engineer, and civilian labor force, some of which still exist today. Thousands of troops were held back from active operations to garrison this complex. And the Commanders of the Army of the Potomac from Irvin McDowell to George Meade, and informally U.S. Grant himself, always had to keep in mind their responsibility of protecting this city, at the same time that they were moving against the Confederate forces arrayed against them. Revised in style, format, and content, the new edition of Mr. Lincoln's Forts is the premier historical reference and tour guide to the Civil War defenses of Washington, D.C.

Download or read book Ghosts of Niagara on the Lake written by Maria Da Silva and published by Dundurn. This book was released on 2018-07-28 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new, expanded edition detailing Niagara-on-the-Lake’s ghostly inhabitants. Long-dead British soldiers, grieving lovers, lingering spirits — Niagara-on-the-Lake’s long and colourful history is kept alive by ghosts of its past. Through historical investigation and eyewitness accounts, Andrew Hind and Maria Da Silva share over two dozen ghostly tales: a murdered British officer haunts the Olde Angel Inn, a ghostly widow retaliates against couples, a condemned ghost at the old courthouse pleads his innocence, and ghostly guests at the Prince of Wales Hotel have no desire to check out. Some have called Niagara on-the-Lake Canada’s most haunted town, and with so much of its built heritage preserved, the community clearly makes the perfect haunt for age-old spirits.
