Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Growth of the Kingdom of God A satisfactory treatment would require many months of closet application and an entire volume for the presentation of the evidence. In spite of the comparative length of the chapter, he does not pretend to have treated the subject in any exhaustive way. Indeed, this may be said with equal truth of the whole book. Rather than a minute examination of the facts, he has sought to take a bird's-eye view of the outstanding features, the more conspicuous movements and growth of Christianity. The primary purpose, the Japanese audience, and the practical, rather than the theoretical interest and aim of the book, will thus account for certain of its features, which, if produced under different circumstances, it might not have had. Its value, however, may possibly be increased rather than diminished by these factors and features. His indebtedness to various writers and his sources of information are sufficiently indicated in the course of the successive chapters. His thanks are due to personal friends and kindred who have rendered very material assistance in the forms of stimulus, suggestions, and correction of the manuscript. The defects incident to the attempt to cover so much ground in a single brief work, none realise more than the author. Among such a mass of statistics, errors are inevitable. None will be more glad than the writer to have such pointed out and corrected. That this volume may find its niche of usefulness, and may help onward the growth of the Kingdom, is the one desire of its author. It is time to recognize that its solution lies not in bio logical analogies, not in the exaltation of the State at the expense of the individual, nor again in the destruction of government, but in that gospel of the Kingdom of God which means the realization of certain ideals at once through social relations and through the highest and fullest development of personality. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from If Christ Were King: Or the Kingdom of Heaven on Earth In discussing some characteristics of the kingdom it may be well for us to notice in the first place that it is present. When Jesus spoke of it as the kingdom of heaven he did not imply that we are to wait for its realization till we pass into another world. That phrase means rather that its source the power by which it is originated and sustained - is in heaven. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth, is the prayer Jesus taught his disciples to Offer. Heaven is, Of course, a part of the kingdom of God, but it is not the part in which Jesus was primarily interested and of which he spoke so Often. Neither is it the part we are dis cussing; our theme is the kingdom on earth. In a sense, this kingdom is a thing of the future. In its perfection it has not come, but is coming. It is a force working in the world for the produc tion of the perfect man in a perfect society. Of necessity it is a thing Of slow growth and requires the ages for its consummation. In another sense, it is now present in the world. Jesus usually spoke of it in that way. Note such phrases as The kingdom of God is come upon you (luke II 20) The kingdom of God is at hand (mark The kingdom of God is among you (luke You will remember that, in de scribing certain classes in the Beatitudes, he said of them, Theirs is the kingdom Of heaven. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Kingdom and the Messiah In order to understand what the Kingdom meant to Jesus, we require to look back over the previous phases of the conception as we find it in the Old Testament and in the later Jewish literature. There is much in the development that is still uncertain and obscure. The available evidence on not a few im portant points awaits further investigation; and occasionally the evidence fails us altogether, and has to be filled out by conjecture. Nevertheless, as a result of the critical inquiries of the last fifty years, we can now distinguish at least the chief steps in the preparation for our Lord's message of the Kingdom. This chapter contains seven parables which according to verse 53 were all delivered by the Savior up on one and the same occasion, and in these seven parables the Lord Jesus clearly sets forth the Truth concerning the establishment and the growth of the Kingdom of the Heavens in this age. Book The Old Testament Prophecy of the Consummation of God s Kingdom Traced in Its Historical Development Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Old Testament Prophecy of the Consummation of God s Kingdom Traced in Its Historical Development Classic Reprint written by Conrad von Orelli and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 494 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Old Testament Prophecy of the Consummation of God's Kingdom, Traced in Its Historical Development The following work aims at ascertaining the meaning which a certain section of Old Testament prophecy must have had for its first hearers and readers. The tendency of Christians has ever been to read the New Testament into the Old. However natural this tendency may be, it is not without injurious effects on the intelligent study of Scripture. Under its influence the difference between the two dispensations is overlooked; type and antitype, promise and fulfilment, childhood and maturity are confounded; ancient believers are credited with knowledge and ideas which go far beyond their circumstances; a weight of meaning is put upon Old Testament passages which they are too weak to bear. Evidently our first effort should be to ascertain what the earlier Scriptures meant in the age to which they spoke; and this is what Dr. Orelli tries to do in the present volume. While doing ample justice to the Christian fulfilment, he first considers every prophecy of the divine kingdom in its relation to speaker, hearers, and the general historical circumstances out of which it arose. The student is placed at the Old Testament standpoint, as far as this is possible to us. We need not fear the results of such an investigation. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Secret of Progress Buckle1 regarded it as clear that militarism and high intellectual development were not compatible: till recently, many people were prepared to believe that warfare was alien to the interest of civilised peoples and could only occur among half civilised or backward races. But this war has shown that these hopes were vain, and that the last result of civilisation was not to render war impossible, but to give the means of carrying it out on a vastly extended scale. The increase of knowledge and of power over nature, and the sense of the benefits of intercourse and inter-communication have not sufficed to give us any immunity from war. Download or read book The Kingdom of God written by Francis D. Breisch Jr. and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2018-12-01 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Kingdom of God, which was first published in 1959, author Francis D. Breisch Jr. himself perfectly summarizes the message of the Old Testament: “It exhibits the unity which exists in the Old Testament. It shows the historical development of God’s work of redemption. It emphasizes the fact that the entire Old Testament prepares for the coming of Christ, the eternal King. To trace the growth of the Kingdom of God is to keep one’s finger on the pulse of God’s redemptive program. Throughout the guide I have attempted to point out the various ways in which the Kingdom of God comes to expression in the Old Testament.” In his own words, Francis D. Breisch Jr.’s book is geared towards the high school student—“reflected in both form and content”—but readers of all ages will find this volume extremely informative in its expression of the way in which God’s kingdom developed over the centuries.

Book Apostles Fathers and Reformers Classic Reprint

Download or read book Apostles Fathers and Reformers Classic Reprint written by John Bayne Ascham and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-08 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Apostles, Fathers, and Reformers Too often in human history the sharp contrast between actual conditions and the higher demands of the Christian ideal has discouraged those upon whom rested the responsibility for making that ideal real. A short-range view of life has obscured the actual growth of the Kingdom which the larger perspective of history reveals. In the face of the overwhelming preponderance of sin and selfishness in the world the Christian Church has again and again contented itself with snatching as many brands as possible from the burning, without, at the same time, seeking to organize the constructive forces of life and of society for the seemingly impossible task of putting out the conflagration. Thus the actual process of the Kingdom's coming among men has proceeded for the most part "without observation," like the first growth of the seed that has been buried in the soil. It is possible to-day, in the light of the completed records of the Old and New Testaments and the subsequent history of the Christian centuries, to discover definite stages of advance with successive landmarks of progress in the gradual establishment of the reign of God in individual lives and in the institutions of mankind. Such a survey of progress already achieved should hearten the organized Christian forces in their forward look and their endeavor to establish still more firmly among men the principles and ideals of the Kingdom. It should encourage the individual to redouble his efforts and inspire in him an unfaltering confidence in the ultimate realization and triumph of God's rule. Herein lies the purpose of the special course of study in the development of the kingdom of God in which this volume constitutes one textbook.
