Book The Growth of the Christian Church Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Growth of the Christian Church Classic Reprint written by Robert Hastings Nichols and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-31 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Growth of the Christian Church The chapters in these volumes have been framed With the thought that each of them should be the material for one meeting of a class. Thus there would be two courses of nine meetings each, or one course of eighteen meetings. The individual teacher or leader must decide whether or not his class will need more than one meeting. For any chapter. It will hardly be found advisable for a class of the age for which the book is primarily intended to take more than one chapter at a meeting. With more mature classes this might be done, though it is hoped that in every chapter there is enough for an hour's consideration by any class. Although Chapters XVII and XVIII are longer than the others, it will probably be found that students, coming to them after going through the earlier chapters, will be able to take each of them at one meeting. Unless the teacher is already somewhat familiar with church history, it is strongly advised that he read all that the class is to cover in the course be fore he prepares himself for the first meeting. To do this will make it much easier to handle the chapters as they come. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eminent church historian and theologian Professor Williston Walker gives us an authoritative and scholarly account on the progress of the church founded by Christ, aptly titled A History of the Christian Church. First published in 1918, this edition has since gone on to become one of the classics in Christian literature. It examines various periods that led to the establishment of the church and how the Reformation came about in light of the preceding events. The author begins this volume with a discussion on the general situation before proceeding to talk about Judaism, the rise of Jesus and his disciples, the end of the apostolic era and the development of Christianity in the second century AD. From Gnosticism at the beginning of the book, he ends with the eventual transition to the modern situation, tackling various subjects such as English Unitarianism, Methodism, Catholicism, and even American Christianity - religious denominations and divisions which remain relevant to this day. The exhaustive nature of Professor Walker's work shows his expertise in the subject and the extent of the research he has done to produce a classic historical account of superb quality. Students of religious studies, as well as those seeking enlightenment on the development of the modern Christian church will benefit much from this clearly written and comprehensive opus. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Development of Christianity For those who desire to study the subject Of these lectures in greater detail, I recommend especially the works on Church history by Baur and Hase. They are mutually complementary. The former is remarkable for his large and spirited interpretation Of the main ideas Of that epoch, Of the fundamental thoughts of the great teachers and heroic leaders as well as Of the teleological connection in the en tire development. The latter is masterly in the Wealth Of detail, the art of vivid narration and the nice, intelligent characterization Of the actors in their relation to their environment. The two writ ers have in common great Objectivity in the treat ment Of the material; they have the ability to trans pose themselves without prejudice into times past and persons distant and foreign, as well as to judge them justly on the basis of the conditions Of their own day. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Growth of the Church in Its Organization and Institutions: Being the Croall Lectures for 1886 The following Lectures were delivered in St. Andrew's Church, Edinburgh, in the months of January and February of the present year. They are designed to show how the Christian Church, from a very humble beginning, has grown to its present greatness; and how the Church of the nineteenth century, though not identical with the Church of the first, is continuous with it. Slow, gradual evolution has been going on everywhere and from the first, but operating in different directions, according to the surroundings. It is thus we account for the great variety of ecclesiastical forms now existing. It has, indeed, been held that the same laws of evolution which are visible in the animal and vegetable worlds do not hold in regard to institutions. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Growing Church: A Study for the Times Not long ago I found myself in the city of Philadelphia, with an hour to spare before my train was due. I wandered again into old Independence Hall, and presently found myself in the upstairs room where was framed the first constitution of the United States. There I noticed the high backed chair with its quaint carving, of which John Fiske tells in one of his volumes. This is the incident: After the momentous act of signing the new constitution which was to be presented to the country for adoption, the room grew very still. The men who had spent months in thought and debate, knew that their task was done and were weighted with the meaning of it. Washington sat with bowed head, his face buried in his hands. On the back of his chair, in which he had presided over the many sessions of the convention, was emblazoned a half sun, brilliant with gilded rays. But since the scantiness of the references may convey to some minds an erroneous impression that the evidence also is scanty, the writer thinks it proper to add that he is not aware of having made any state ment which he is not also ready to support by sufficient proofs. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Cross of Christ: Studies in the History of Religion and the Inner Life of the Church A delineation, briefly presenting in its leading features the historic course of development which gave rise successively to these main forms and phases of the religion of the Cross, may, on account of the beauty and grandeur of its object, be regarded as secured against the suspicion of micrologic dul ness. The history of the Cross necessarily presents a reflected image of the history of Christianity itself, and indeed a more instructive and important one than any other similar contem plation, under the veil of an emblem, of the rise and growth of our religion hitherto, which might in any way be attempted. Specially upon a closer examination of its preparatory history - in the remarkable and partly enigmatical airy reflections which, in the form of so many a cruciform symbol upon the art monuments of the pre-christian as of modern Heathen dom, serve as heralds and precursors of the cultus of the Cross in the Christian Church - does our subject awaken interest in every one at all endowed with historic culture, and a sense for the appreciation of higher ethical endeavours and problems. The title Contribution to the Philosophy of History, pertains with unquestionable right to a treatment of the subject designed and executed from such standpoint; even though from time to time an indispensable entering into the details of the controversies with regard to the archeology of worship or of art, as also an examination of the more important phenomena of the dogmatic or mystic-ascetic literature bearing upon our subject, should occasion many deviations from the mode of treatment ordinarily prevailing in works on the philosophy of history.
