Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Growth of Religious Ideals As: Illustrated by the Great English Poets In offering this book to seekers after truth on both sides of the Atlantic, I claim no originality of interpretation with respect to the message of any one of all the authors who come under our consideration. I do not even flatter myself that the idea itself is quite novel, or that others have not expressed the teachings of our several poets in a far abler way than I have done. Book How the Idea of Religious Toleration Came to the West

Download or read book How the Idea of Religious Toleration Came to the West written by Perez Zagorin and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2005-10-09 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Religious intolerance, so terrible and deadly in its recent manifestations, is nothing new. In fact, until after the eighteenth century, Christianity was perhaps the most intolerant of all the great world religions. How Christian Europe and the West went from this extreme to their present universal belief in religious toleration is the momentous story fully told for the first time in this timely and important book by a leading historian of early modern Europe. Perez Zagorin takes readers to a time when both the Catholic Church and the main new Protestant denominations embraced a policy of endorsing religious persecution, coercing unity, and, with the state's help, mercilessly crushing dissent and heresy. This position had its roots in certain intellectual and religious traditions, which Zagorin traces before showing how out of the same traditions came the beginnings of pluralism in the West. Here we see how sixteenth- and seventeenth-century thinkers--writing from religious, theological, and philosophical perspectives--contributed far more than did political expediency or the growth of religious skepticism to advance the cause of toleration. Reading these thinkers--from Erasmus and Sir Thomas More to John Milton and John Locke, among others--Zagorin brings to light a common, if unexpected, thread: concern for the spiritual welfare of religion itself weighed more in the defense of toleration than did any secular or pragmatic arguments. His book--which ranges from England through the Netherlands, the post-1685 Huguenot Diaspora, and the American Colonies--also exposes a close connection between toleration and religious freedom. A far-reaching and incisive discussion of the major writers, thinkers, and controversies responsible for the emergence of religious tolerance in Western society--from the Enlightenment through the United Nations' Universal Declaration of Human Rights--this original and richly nuanced work constitutes an essential chapter in the intellectual history of the modern world.

Book Social and Religious Ideals

Download or read book Social and Religious Ideals written by Artemas Jean Haynes and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-26 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Social and Religious Ideals At the present time many thoughtful people are seriously perplexed by questions that seem to throw doubt upon the essentials of the Christian faith. That radical and far-reaching changes are taking place in our theological conceptions cannot be denied. What will be the outcome of these changes? How much is left of the old faith? Is there growing up a new faith that will meet the religious and social needs of a new age? The answers of traditional theology to these questions will not, it is becoming clear, satisfy earnest seekers of the truth. This little volume is sent out in the hope that those who are perplexed may find guidance in its pages. The writer does not assume that he has answered all their questions, but he ventures to hope that he may direct their steps into some new way of inquiry. Book Religion and Development

Download or read book Religion and Development written by Gerrie ter Haar and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Until recently, policy-makers and academics generally saw religion as something that would disappear as countries made economic progress. But we now know that this rarely happens in fact. People in most countries continue to look at the world through the prism of religion even when they develop modern lifestyles. Religion and Development looks at the ways in which a religious worldview influences processes of development. Its great originality is that it does not concentrate primarily on religious institutions and organisations but on religious ideas themselves. In the final resort, it is people's ideas that motivate them. Their worldview stimulates them to act in specific ways. Religion is a dimension of life that often lies behind qualities such as social trust and cohesion that are vital to development. This is of growing importance in a world where technocratic visions of development have lost their way. For communities where religious belief is accepted as a fact of everyday life, religion constitutes a major resource. It can be employed by people who want to destroy society as well as those who want to build it. The contributors to this book explore how religious resources can be harnessed for development. Many of the world's people believe that the material advancement of both individuals and communities is inseparable from their spiritual improvement. The essays in this volume take this point of view seriously.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jesus' Ideals of Living: A Textbook in the Religion of Youth, Based on Jesus' Own Religion and His Discoveries of Truth is a religious textbook written by George Walter Fiske. Fiske held a PhD from Boston University and was a theology professor at the School of Theology at Oberlin College. Jesus' Ideals of Living is intended to be used by teachers instructing teenagers in a Christian education. "Is there anything real in religion?" Fiske rhetorically asks, "What difference does it really make if a person is a Christian?" The author attempts to lead students to the answers to these questions through a series of chapters detailing the teachings of Jesus. The book is divided into six parts, with topics such as "Jesus' Ideals of Living", "Jesus' Ideals of Personal Growth", "Ideals or Personal Righteousness", "Ideals of Social Justice", " Ideals of Service and Sacrifice", and "Ideals of Friendship". Every part is composed of numerous short chapters, each of which contains a different teaching or lesson of Jesus. Chapters are concluded with a series of discussion questions to encourage further thinking. As a Christian textbook, Jesus' Ideals of Living is effective. The book is presented in a logical manner, and the teachings contained within are certainly relevant to the subject matter. The discussion questions are carefully designed, and require the student to not only reflect on the reading, but also to engage in a period of self-reflection. Jesus' Ideals of Living is a worthy textbook on Christianity and the teachings of Jesus. If you are in search of a textbook to teach young people and teenagers about Jesus' ideals Fiske's book is definitely worthy of your consideration.
