This book was released on 2017-11-24 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Growth of Religion, a Study of Its Origin and Development IN the very large literature which we now have concern ing the origin and development of religion, there is either too generous an element of Speculation or the facts are arranged in an order which does not plainly suggest the actual order of evolution. In this work an attempt is made to distribute the known facts in such succession that they do present, as far as possible, the real obro nological development of human culture. The most primitive fragments of our race are rigorously separated from higher tribes, and the stage of religious development at which they linger is very carefully determined. In the selection of these primitive peoples the teaching of modern anthropology is closely followed, and many tribes which are usually quoted as primitive are withheld until a later stage. By this procedure a view of the origin of religion is reached which differs from that presented in the majority of recent works on the subject. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christianity in History: A Study of Religious Development Ours is in fact an attempt to set forth the genesis and growth of certain of the more typical forms and phases which Christianity - whether as conduct, piety, thought, or organised Church life - has assumed under the conditioning influences first of the Roman Empire and then of the Western civilisation that was its successor and heir. Thus, of books known to us, Professor Percy Gardner's Growth of Christianity is most akin to ours. Yet, apart from its larger scale, ours differs from his a good deal in scope and execution. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Religions In the course of this volume we shall study the roots and the higher growth of this tree, which through its age long development, as any tree changes its earth-drawn sustenance into something more ethereal, has transmuted terror into reverent awe, hunger into hope, lust into love. We shall trace the slow progress of such roots of religion as bear today the names taboo, fetishism, totemism; see how taboo invested with spiritual power the moral com mand, insured the home, and made for civilization; how fetishism confirmed the thought that man depends on a spiritual something, gave faith in a power that helped, and made that power the judge of right and wrong; how totemism linked man in communion with the divine and in conjunction with seasonal nature-worship founded ritual in the recurrent form necessary to religious stability. We shall see in short that the higher not only is above the lower but that it has ascended out of the lower. Savagery did not give place to civilization but developed into it, was already civilization in the germ. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Religion: A Sketch of Primitive Religious Beliefs and Practices, and of the Origin and Character of the Great Systems The science of religion, though of such recent origin, has already passed beyond its earliest stage, as a reference even to its earlier and its later names will show. Comparative Religion was the title given at first to the combined study of various religions. What had to be done was to compare these systems. The facts about them had to be collected, the systems arranged according to the best information pro curable, and then laid side by side, that it might be seen what features they had in common and what each had to distinguish it from the others. Work of this kind is still abundantly necessary. The collection of materials and the specifying of the'similarities and dissimilarities of the various faiths will long occupy many workers. This science, like every other, begins with classification. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on the Origin and Growth of Religion: As Illustrated by the Religion of Ancient Egypt, Delivered in May and June, 1879 The religion of ancient Egypt is known to us through authentic records of various kinds, extending through a period of not less than three thousand years. It may have been in existence for many centuries anterior to the earliest of the monuments which have been preserved. Its origin is a matter, not of history, but of speculation. Its last centuries coincide with the first centuries of the Christian religion which gra dually supplanted it. During this period the zoolatry, or worship Of the sacred animals, was the feature which chiefly attracted the notice of the Christian apologists who have made any observations upon the subject. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on the Origin and Growth of Religion: As Illustrated by the Religion of the Ancient Hebrews MY purpose in these Lectures is to give a short history, as clear as I can make it, Of the Religion of the Old Testament. By this I mean that I have endeavoured to group the religious material contained in that book in chronological order, and to trace the historical develop ment, which then becomes visible, from its beginning to its end. This beginning has been but lightly touched upon, partly because Of its extreme Obscurity and partly because of my own insufficient equipment to deal ade quately with so complex a problem; but more space has thus been won for the delineation of that phase Of the Jewish religion in which it stood at the close of the Old Testament period, and on the lines of which it was destined to develop for many subsequent centuries. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on the Origin and Growth of Religion: As Illustrated by the Religion of the Ancient Babylonians A word of apology is needed for the numerous repetitions in the following chapters, which are due to the fact that the chapters were written and delivered in the form of Lectures. I cannot guarantee the exactness of every word in the trans lations of the cuneiform texts given in them. The meaning of individual words may at times be more precisely defined by the discovery of fuller materials, even where it has been supposed that their signification has been fixed with certainty. The same fate has befallen the interpretation of the Hebrew Scriptures, and is still more likely to befall a progressive study like Assyrian.
