Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Growth of Church Institutions And since the work is thus designed for general readers, and is a summary of results rather than a detailed explanation of the facts upon which they are based, the writer has not thought it desirable to encumber the pages with more than the most necessary references to his authorities. But since the scantiness of the references may convey to some minds an erroneous impression that the evidence also is scanty, the writer thinks it proper to add that he is not aware of having made any state ment which he is not also ready to support by sufficient proofs. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Growth of the Church in Its Organization and Institutions: Being the Croall Lectures for 1886 The following Lectures were delivered in St. Andrew's Church, Edinburgh, in the months of January and February of the present year. They are designed to show how the Christian Church, from a very humble beginning, has grown to its present greatness; and how the Church of the nineteenth century, though not identical with the Church of the first, is continuous with it. Slow, gradual evolution has been going on everywhere and from the first, but operating in different directions, according to the surroundings. It is thus we account for the great variety of ecclesiastical forms now existing. It has, indeed, been held that the same laws of evolution which are visible in the animal and vegetable worlds do not hold in regard to institutions. Download or read book The Growth of the Christian Church Classic Reprint written by Robert Hastings Nichols and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-31 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Growth of the Christian Church The chapters in these volumes have been framed With the thought that each of them should be the material for one meeting of a class. Thus there would be two courses of nine meetings each, or one course of eighteen meetings. The individual teacher or leader must decide whether or not his class will need more than one meeting. For any chapter. It will hardly be found advisable for a class of the age for which the book is primarily intended to take more than one chapter at a meeting. With more mature classes this might be done, though it is hoped that in every chapter there is enough for an hour's consideration by any class. Although Chapters XVII and XVIII are longer than the others, it will probably be found that students, coming to them after going through the earlier chapters, will be able to take each of them at one meeting. Unless the teacher is already somewhat familiar with church history, it is strongly advised that he read all that the class is to cover in the course be fore he prepares himself for the first meeting. To do this will make it much easier to handle the chapters as they come. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Secret of Progress Buckle1 regarded it as clear that militarism and high intellectual development were not compatible: till recently, many people were prepared to believe that warfare was alien to the interest of civilised peoples and could only occur among half civilised or backward races. But this war has shown that these hopes were vain, and that the last result of civilisation was not to render war impossible, but to give the means of carrying it out on a vastly extended scale. The increase of knowledge and of power over nature, and the sense of the benefits of intercourse and inter-communication have not sufficed to give us any immunity from war. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Growing Church: A Study for the Times Not long ago I found myself in the city of Philadelphia, with an hour to spare before my train was due. I wandered again into old Independence Hall, and presently found myself in the upstairs room where was framed the first constitution of the United States. There I noticed the high backed chair with its quaint carving, of which John Fiske tells in one of his volumes. This is the incident: After the momentous act of signing the new constitution which was to be presented to the country for adoption, the room grew very still. The men who had spent months in thought and debate, knew that their task was done and were weighted with the meaning of it. Washington sat with bowed head, his face buried in his hands. On the back of his chair, in which he had presided over the many sessions of the convention, was emblazoned a half sun, brilliant with gilded rays. The account of all development is philosophy in the concrete The history of institutions, of their rise and growth, their functions and purposes, is one of the most instructive, broadening, and liberalizing studies that can occupy the mind. Preeminent among human institutions are those which spring out of man's religious nature The central fact of his being is his religion; worship is his most univer sal trait and most fundamental instinct. Wherever he has built him a house in which to dwell, he has reared him a temple in which to pray and adore. All the facts and phenomena of man's life, social and individual, order themselves about religion as a determining principle. The nature of man is per manently and prevailingly religious. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Modern Church N 0 such prejudice as was at first directed against Raikes has Obstructed the growth Of Sunday schools in this country where from the first theydhave been under church supervision. From the first, also, they have been able to give exclusive attention to religious instruction since the public schools provided secular education. For almost a century after their establishment the main effort was directed toward organiza tion. The Sunday school was regarded as a mere nursery, from which after a period Of suitable culture the members could be transplanted into the church for permanent growth. Naturally the success Of any school was measured largely by the number Of attendants. Extraordinary efforts were made to get all the people into it, and to plant new schools in all unoccupied places. Book The Urban Church Imagined

Download or read book The Urban Church Imagined written by Jessica M. Barron and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2017-11-28 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Explores the role of race and consumer culture in attracting urban congregants to an evangelical church The Urban Church Imagined illuminates the dynamics surrounding white urban evangelical congregations’ approaches to organizational vitality and diversifying membership. Many evangelical churches are moving to urban, downtown areas to build their congregations and attract younger, millennial members. The urban environment fosters two expectations. First, a deep familiarity and reverence for popular consumer culture, and second, the presence of racial diversity. Church leaders use these ideas when they imagine what a “city church” should look like, but they must balance that with what it actually takes to make this happen. In part, racial diversity is seen as key to urban churches presenting themselves as “in touch” and “authentic.” Yet, in an effort to seduce religious consumers, church leaders often and inadvertently end up reproducing racial and economic inequality, an unexpected contradiction to their goal of inclusivity. Drawing on several years of research, Jessica M. Barron and Rhys H. Williams explore the cultural contours of one such church in downtown Chicago. They show that church leaders and congregants’ understandings of the connections between race, consumer culture, and the city is a motivating factor for many members who value interracial interactions as a part of their worship experience. But these explorations often unintentionally exclude members along racial and classed lines. Indeed, religious organizations’ efforts to engage urban environments and foster integrated congregations produce complex and dynamic relationships between their racially diverse memberships and the cultivation of a safe haven in which white, middle-class leaders can feel as though they are being a positive force in the fight for religious vitality and racial diversity. The book adds to the growing constellation of studies on urban religious organizations, as well as emerging scholarship on intersectionality and congregational characteristics in American religious life. In so doing, it offers important insights into racially diverse congregations in urban areas, a growing trend among evangelical churches. This work is an important case study on the challenges faced by modern churches and urban institutions in general.

In this chang ing, growing world, only a growing, changing Church can be all things to all men and institutions that it may win them to accept Christ as the only Saviour of individuals and of society. Democracy, commerce, industry and social organization are taking thousand-league steps. They must not out-distance the Church. In the approaching high-tide of opportunity for religion and the Church, she must advance even faster than other institutions. Putting aside all sectarian and debatable matters, she must press to one supreme goal, to make Jesus Christ King in every life and in every com munity, in every nation and in all human interests.
