Book Music Learning as Youth Development

Download or read book Music Learning as Youth Development written by Brian Kaufman and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-05-30 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Music Learning as Youth Development explores how music education programs can contribute to young people’s social, emotional, cognitive, and artistic capacities in the context of life-long musical development. International scholars argue that MLYD programs should focus in particular on the curiosity, energy and views of young people affecting the teachers, musicians, pedagogy, programs, and music with which young people interact. From fields of progressive music education, authors share their perspectives on approaches that can lead to new ways of enabling youth learners as they transition to adulthood. A vast range of possible outcomes arising from in-school, afterschool, and community-based music programs are examined in order to highlight the aspects of youth development that music learning is particularly well-suited to support. Following an introductory essay that provides new perspectives on pursuing lifelong musical development, the volume is features two primary sections. The first focuses on case studies exploring several programs through the lens of the transitional stages of music learning as youth development, helping the reader understand key concepts and explore challenges for creating music learning as youth development programs. The second section addresses the broad implications and policy issues of programs described, including discussing why music learning should be conceived of as critical to formative stages of youth development that can lead to a productive and fulfilling life. The conclusion synthesizes the range of perspectives provided by eight contributors and offers implications for life-long human development through music in the 21st century.

Book How Music Developed A Critical and Explanatory Account of the Growth of Modern Music

Download or read book How Music Developed A Critical and Explanatory Account of the Growth of Modern Music written by William James Henderson and published by Library of Alexandria. This book was released on 2020-09-28 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: IN reading any history of the development of music as an art one must ever bear in mind the fact that music was also developing at the same time as a popular mode of expression, and that the two processes were separate. The cultivation of modern music as an art was begun by the medieval priests of the Roman Catholic Church, who were endeavoring to arrange a liturgy for their service, and it is due to this fact that for several centuries the only artistic music was that of the Church, and that it was controlled by influences which barely touched the popular songs of the times. In the course of years the two kinds of music came together, and important changes were made. But any account of the development of modern music as an art is compelled to begin with the story of the medieval chant. In the beginning the chants of the Christian Church, from which the medieval chant was developed, were without system. They were a heterogeneous mass of music derived wholly from sources which chanced to be near at hand. The early Christians in Judea must naturally have borrowed their music from the worship of their forefathers, who were mostly Jews. The Christians in Greece naturally adapted Greek music to their requirements, while those in Rome made use of the Roman kithara (lyre) songs, which in their turn were borrowed from the Greeks. Christ and the apostles at the Last Supper chanted one of the old Hebrew psalms. Saint Paul speaks also of "hymns and spiritual songs," by one of which designations he certainly means the hymns of the early Christians founded on Roman lyre songs. It is also on record that the Christian communities of Alexandria as early as 180 A. D. were in the habit of repeating the chant of the Last Supper with an accompaniment of flutes, and Pliny, the Younger (62-110 A. D.), describes the custom of singing hymns to the glory of Christ.

Book The Growth and Influence of Music in Relation to Civilization

Download or read book The Growth and Influence of Music in Relation to Civilization written by H. Tipper and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-25 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Growth and Influence of Music in Relation to Civilization The purpose of this volume is to consider the growth and development of music chiefly in relation to the moral influence it has exerted, and the ideal forces of which it is the exponent. To this end an earnest study has been given to the subject from the aspects indicated, and an attempt made to show how in each period, school and composer is reflected the peculiar characteristics of the time which may be under consideration. The four chapters on China, Hindustan, Egypt, and Israel are, however, not designed as an examination of Eastern music. Introduced to give unity to the subject, the national idiosyncrasies which found expression in their art have been but briefly dwelt upon, but as the work progresses, the idea upon which it is based assumes increasing prominence, especially in the essays upon the great composers, Bach, Handel, Gluck, Haydn, Mozart, and Beethoven. Book excerpt: The book can be viewed as representing the birth of evolutionary biomusicology. What biological and cognitive forces have shaped humankind's musical behavior and the rich global repertoire of musical structures? What is music for, and why does every human culture have it? What are the universal features of music and musical behavior across cultures? In this groundbreaking book, musicologists, biologists, anthropologists, archaeologists, psychologists, neuroscientists, ethologists, and linguists come together for the first time to examine these and related issues. The book can be viewed as representing the birth of evolutionary biomusicology—the study of which will contribute greatly to our understanding of the evolutionary precursors of human music, the evolution of the hominid vocal tract, localization of brain function, the structure of acoustic-communication signals, symbolic gesture, emotional manipulation through sound, self-expression, creativity, the human affinity for the spiritual, and the human attachment to music itself.
