Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With over thirty thousand occupations currently in existence, workers today face a bewildering array of careers from which to choose, and upon which to center their lives. But there is more at stake than just a paycheck. For too long, work has driven a wedge between families, dividing husband from wife, father from son, mother from daughter, and family from home. Building something that will last requires a radically different approach than is common or encouraged today. In Durable Trades, Groves uncovers family-centered professions that have endured the worst upheavals in history--including the Industrial Revolution--and continue to thrive today. Through careful research and thoughtful commentary, Groves offers another way forward to those looking for a more durable future.

  • Pages : 408 pages

Download or read book The Grove Diaries written by Desmond Hawkins and published by University of Delaware Press. This book was released on 1995 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The publication of the diaries of successive generations of the Grove family is of considerable importance. Spanning more than a century, from 1809 to 1925, and described by one scholar as 'like a Jane Austen novel, but for real', they chart the rise of a Wiltshire/Dorset border family from county gentry to aristocratic Victorian grandees, before finally tracing the much steeper trajectory of the family's decline." "The Grove family home was Ferne House, near Shaftesbury. And it is at Ferne in 1809 that the eighteen-year-old Harriet Grove began this remarkable series of diaries. But Harriet was no ordinary diarist, for her later attempts to scratch out references to 'my dear Bysshe' testify to her affair with her cousin, the poet Percy Bysshe Shelley, with whom she was then deeply in love." "In 1811 the diary of her older sister Charlotte takes up the narrative. Charlotte's entire life was spent within walking distance of Ferne. Gossip adds spice to a rural world that is as measured and unchanging as the parson's wife she became. The third diarist, her nephew Thomas, was cast in a very different mould. Captain of dragoons, baronet, member of parliament, master of Ferne, Thomas effortlessly absorbed the delusions of grandeur of the Victorian heyday. His diaries span the years 1855 to 1897, ultimately recording the collapse of British agriculture and a financial crisis that brought the family to the brink of ruin." "The diaries of his daughter-in-law, Agnes, which run from 1882 to 1925, bear the imprint of the Whig aristocracy. Born a daughter of General Pitt-Rivers and cousin of Bertrand Russell, noted for her wit and beauty, Agnes Grove's passionately held beliefs in women's rights and her long friendship with Thomas Hardy give her diaries a resonance that brings her gloriously to life."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Book Through the Groves

Download or read book Through the Groves written by Anne Hull and published by Henry Holt and Company. This book was released on 2023-06-20 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Hypnotic and tender, this book reminds us that even if we leave our homes, our homes never leave us.” —Oprah Daily “[Hull] has that sly eye for sublime details, but also a killer instinct for tight storytelling.” —Carl Hiaasen, New York Times Book Review A richly evocative coming-of-age memoir set in the Florida orange groves of the 1960s by a Pulitzer Prize–winning journalist Anne Hull grew up in rural Central Florida, barefoot half the time and running through the orange groves her father’s family had worked for generations. The ground trembled from the vibrations of bulldozers and jackhammers clearing land for Walt Disney World. “Look now,” her father told her as they rode through the mossy landscape together. “It will all be gone.” But the real threat was at home, where Hull was pulled between her idealistic but self-destructive father and her mother, a glamorous outsider from Brooklyn struggling with her own aspirations. All the while, Hull felt the pressures of girlhood closing in. She dreamed of becoming a traveling salesman who ate in motel coffee shops, accompanied by her baton-twirling babysitter. As her sexual identity took shape, Hull knew the place she loved would never love her back and began plotting her escape. Here, Hull captures it all—the smells and sounds of a disappearing way of life, the secret rituals and rhythms of a doomed family, the casual racism of the rural South in the 1960s, and the suffocating expectations placed on girls and women. Vividly atmospheric and haunting, Through the Groves will speak to anyone who’s ever left home to cut a path of their own.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the sacred grove of Julius Caesar, something deadly stirs in the undergrowth—a serial killer, who haunted the gardens for years, has claimed another victim—in Lindsey Davis’s next historical mystery, The Grove of the Caesars. At the feet of her adoptive father, renowned private informer Marcus Didius Falco, Flavia Albia learned a number of important rules. First and foremost—always keep one's distance from the palace, nothing good comes from that direction. But right behind it—murder is the business of the Vigiles, best to leave them to it. Having broken the first rule more often than she'd like, it's no surprise to anyone when she finds herself breaking the second one. The public gardens named after the Caesars is a place nice girls are warned away from and when a series of bodies are uncovered, it seems that a serial killer has been haunting the grove for years. The case is assigned to one Julius Karus, a cohort of the Vigiles, but Albia is convinced that nothing will come of his efforts. Out of sympathy for the dead women and their grieving relatives, Albia decides to work with the vile Karus and bring the serial killer to justice.
